I don't think we're saying that we'd necessarily want to use this gun, can only speak for myself but in my eyes we were only joking around about how this gun looks so much like the gun an old man would have lying around in his house from his old hunting days, to scare away teenage punkrockers from throwing beercans on his lawn. I'm not an american, can't really own guns in my country, and I don't think I would own one if I could, I think they are exiting to watch and stuff but they kinda make me nervous to be around.

Bob Barker Bob Barker interesting take on it. If op was "salivating over the moment he gets to use his gun on someone" why would he hypothetically tell them to leave? What were they hypothetically doing? I know a guy who got home from work, went inside, shortly later went out to his vehicle to retrieve something and saw his neighbor being beaten. Two young men had broken into his car and when he saw them and told them to leave they attacked him. The guy was in his 70's. My buddy intervened with a gun on his neighbors (70's guy) behalf and both of those criminals went to jail that night. The old guy went out and got a gun. You have this ill conceived notion that somebody with a gun wants to kill, to "use their gun on someone". A lot of those people have been subject to the whims of violent criminals. They learned a lesson, or carry a trauma depending on how you want to see it. To threaten to end someone's life for trespassing? Lol criminals don't deserve a safe work environment and in many states the law is on your side in exercising lethal force. Telling them to leave first is a kindness they don't necessarily deserve. You make a choice when you wake up in the morning and put on your bad guy costume. No law abiding gun owner looks forward to violence. They just look forward to surviving violence. The power to defend oneself and ones property and ones family is not a privilege, it is definitely a right. It's weak minds who think otherwise. That's another take on it for you. Good luck.

Speaking from England where we lost our right to handguns in 1997 due to a single school shooting incident, please note what I am about to write. I have lost legally held, fully licensed pistols in 3 countries in the last 20 years so I REALLY do know what I am talking about. Registration equals Confiscation. Support the NRA, never give a single inch or compromise on your RIGHTS. The Second Amendment IS the only real freedom you have my friends. I travel in the USA frequently and believe me, in all other respects you are not sadly, living in the free country you all seem to believe you are. Only the right to keep and bear arms separates you from the rest of the world. Listen to Hickok45, support the NRA or you will end up like us and just about every country in the world.

That is a classic gun that has history, and great looks. Only a bird hunter can really appreciate a gun like that. We see it being carried in the Autumn Uplands shooting quail (or bird....quail is bird) or woodcock, over a Brittany on point. Beautiful gun...straight grip, a light gun, but long enough barrels not to be whippy, specifically designed for the uplands. Anybody who would cut the barrels down would be crazy. I would love to have that gun.

My grandfather had an LC Smith field grade double barrel 12 gauge similar to that one that he used for duck and goose hunting. At one point about 6 or 7 years ago I found it in his basement took it out of the sleeve broke it open and about 2 inches of dead bugs fell out. I couldn't stand to let it sit there so I took it home and cleaned it up as best as I could without hurting the finish. Now I love using it for clay bird shooting

Ah yes the memories this brings back. I had one of these as my primary competition shot gun during my cowboy action days. I got it used and past owner had it cut down to coach gun length 18.5" it handled well. only thing I ever did on it mechanically was to polish the chambers, so the hulls would drop free when the action was opened and flipped over my shoulder. That gun never ever skipped a beat in over five years of monthly competition or in major 3 and four day matches. Seeing this video makes me want to take the old girl out of the safe and go after some quail. :-) thanks for the trip down memory lane Hickok.

That's a cool thing to do. I often consider myself being responsible for enjoying life for my dad and brother since they are gone. Taking out one of Dad's firearms and enjoying it especially brings that to mind. My dad always like the single actions. He could have bought a Colt if he had wanted, but he was always too cheap to to it, so I enjoy Colt SAAs for him now. :-)

Grew up shooting an L.C. Smith, in fact first shotgun I ever shot. Loved shooting that gun. My dad rescued it from my grandfather who was about to cut it down for a “snake charmer”. I don’t know which grade my dad’s is but it does have some engraving on the sides. Don’t know the history of who had it before my grandfather, but we kept it in the condition that in came into our family which is pretty good. Thanks for the trip down memory lane Hickok!

Love these old side by sides. L.C. Smith is trully an outstanding shotgun. I went to a Cresent 60 Empire Hammerless. It is a first year production (1925) and a copy pretty much of and L.C.Smith. mine retains 99.99 percent original blueing and case colors. I replaced the stock and forearm. Its a beaut. I shoot mine using those new 1-3/4 inch shot shells. Not so much power it boots me around rudely. But enough to shoot as far as I can see. Im old like my shotgun. (74). I love old doubles. I also own a Stevens 311 A cut down to 18 -1/2 . I started using short shells in this one too.

I inherited my grandfathers "Elsie". When my uncle passed away. I'm the third owner and my grandfather bought it to go pheasant hunting with some business partners. Didn't like hunting so cleaned it and stuck it under the bed. My uncle never shot it . It stayed under his bed. I got it and it's with me every dove opener. In 6 more years it will be 100 years old. I will give it to my son. I fire nothing but 2.5 inch low pressure loads from RST through it and kill doves with ease. Choke improved/ modified and has 95% case coloring. All original, no rust. I'm not going to wait until I die before passing it on. Great vid

My grandfather purchased a 16 gauge field grade L.C. Smith in 1914 as a present for himself on his 17th birthday. He was raised on a farm in Western Minnesota. His game bird of choice was the Prairie Chicken. He passed the L.C. to my Dad in 1953. My Dad gave it to me when I was 13 in 1963. It has been my go to shotgun for Northern Minnesota Rugged Grouse. The case hardening has faded. The barrels are deep browned. I have asked a few gunsmith if I should hang it on the wall. Invariably they said "Shoot it. You will never find a better shotgun.". I will.

Apparently it's bad to dry fire sxs shotguns, that and rimfire are about the only stuff you shouldn't dry fire. Apparently some English made high end shotguns like Holland and Holland used to come with brass snaps caps. I just picked one up and the guy who was showing it to me was the shop gunsmith and he didn't even bother to put them in, but it can damage the gun beyond the firing pins which is the real issue. Replacing a firing pin is not a big deal depending on how old the gun is and a reproduction part is manufactured by anyone... Gorgeous shotgun!!!

Hi Hickok.... Yes, L.C. Smith firing pins are very prone to breaking. I've had 2 Smith pins break on 2 different guns of mine. And I've never dry fired them.

John, to make your advertisement more interesting you guys should take us around the range while you talk and set up and paint etc. I guarantee more people would stick around to hear about your sponsors.

IIRC The thing that made the LC Smith typewriters unique (at the time) was that it was one of the first to have upper and lowercase letters. LC Smith later merged with or bought out Corona Tyoewriter Co. to form Smith Corona. The company still exists making shipping label printing equipment.

I have an old LC smith missing an extractor and it’s one of my most prized possessions. Next to great granddad’s 94.

I just found a 1904 L.C Smith side by side in my grandmas attic. Pretty rough shape but it does have the optional auto ejector. It's going to make a nice wall hanger.

Love the simplicity of that Elsie. I believe it's a Featherweight Model? No frills, just your basic 'knock em dead' LC Smith. And...w/ an English stock. Wish my '06 looked like that. Drool Worthy 4 sure!!!

Great timing for a video on the Smith. Next weekend in Sanford North Carolina, the 18th annual Southern Side by Side classic will be held. Thousands of vintage shotguns will be there, and the star of the show will be the L.C. Smith vs Parker Bros Challenge Cup. You should check it out some time. It is the worlds largest gathering of vintage shotguns. Many will be for sale, and the Challenge is always a blast to watch. Last year there was even an 8 gauge event held with loner guns and ammo.
