Super review Jasper, and very timely as more of these L405s come on to the second hand market. I used to have a facelift L322 like yours and am back in the market for a RR here in Switzerland, so the L322/L405 question is very much in my head right now! I think the L322 is still the last of the proper RRs and I can’t resist that body styling.
@BuckleUpShow
@BuckleUpShow Год назад
For me the gulf in price between the 322 and 405, paired with the fact the 405 doesn't really feel any better inside, made the decision for me. The only reason I'd get the 405 is if I *had* to have the newer styling.

@@BuckleUpShow I have and still currently own a L322 and find they are very reliable, I also had a l405 for 2 years and that had a few problems. Most of the breakdowns are caused by the previous owners neglect or they just can’t afford to run it, then they go on Facebook, RU-vid etc. complaining about it. Keep up with servicing and they are just as reliable as any big expensive complex car. 👍🏼
@BuckleUpShow
@BuckleUpShow Год назад
I mean, take a look at the channel and I think it's not hard to see we like a JLR product here however, we have our eyes wide open about their reliability. Figures release by warranty direct show 34% of Land Rover vehicles have a warranty claim made on them. That's the third highest manufacturers claim rate behind Alfa Romeo and Porsche. Yes you can avoid some of the big scary things with good maintenance but little errors like boot opening going a bit weird tend to be cause by slightly lower quality control standards. With all of this said, we still like Range Rovers and Jasper himself owns an L322, they're worth the risk.

Jasper, your presentation was fantastic. I absolutely love my 2016 L405 Autobiography in blue with the Executive Seats package. The only downsides are the expensive maintenance costs and the fact that the rear seats don't fold down when I need extra cargo space. The infotainment system is also outdated, but I plan to upgrade it soon. Overall, I'm very happy with my car.

They are excellent cars! Such luxury and comfort in a vehicle that feels like it will go anywhere. Maintenance costs come with the luxury, unfortunately. I assume the seats don't fold due to them being a higher-spec option? Thanks for the good feedback! 😁

I would prefer the look and feel of the L322. It really is the last Range Rover that you can do proper off roady stuff with. The others are capable, don’t get me wrong, but can you imagine how stupid an L405 will look driving around town with BF Goodriches a 3 inch lift and roof mounted LEDs? The only reason to buy an L405 (for me) would be for the one thing you didn’t mention - ULEZ. Unless you chose the V8 supercharged version none of the L322s are Euro6. Which means you are increasingly restricted to suburban and rural usage, most major cities in the uk and Europe now have clean air initiatives which make the L405 (from late 2015) the only choice if wanting a diesel with the lovely 8-speed ZF box, and not having to pay a daily charge to use your car. From late 2015 (65-plate in uk) the diesels had catalysing DPFs fitted (AdBlue versions) which greatly reduced NOx particulates. There’s a whole load of interior refinements that were introduced too, including massage seats. I guess for a happy L322 owner there’s not enough to warrant a change up unless you’re affected by the onrush of cleaner air taxation. Great video, and lovely colour L405. Thanks
@BuckleUpShow
@BuckleUpShow Год назад
We'll make a deal, if this channel blows up and we can get an L405 as a project car we'll try it out as an off road build to see how it look, though we'll probably stick with air suspension because we like the flexibility of it

Nice review. Love the colour, few around. The ride would be even better if the wheel size was dropped to 20”, I’ve done this on mine. The tailgate should open and close both sections with a single button push BTW. The infotainment screen was updated in 2017 and is a worthwhile improvement. The SDV8 is the best of the L405s IMHO. 👍
@BuckleUpShow
@BuckleUpShow Год назад
The colour combination on this is wonderful, and not one we'd seen before. Definitely in agreement that 20s would ride better! Glad to know about the tailgate, seems this one may just be a bit broken? The updated infotainment would definitely be an improvement as the one prior to that seems horribly dated. Jasper's still torn about whether the SDV8 or the 5.0 Supercharged Petrol is really the pick of the bunch 😂

I just bought a 2016 L405 super charged. I had a 2003 l322 v8 hse. This one drives faster, smoother, breaks much better. 8 speed is awesome. 7 inch longer cabin is super noticeable. Sound system is super great. The aluminum bidu flexes and i can hear it in the leather. I miss the flat truck like dash of the l322. The l322 has a taller cabin. Especially in the rear. Bc i enjoy boon docking in it. The electric seats do not fold down perfectly flat and i cant unscew them in minutes and take them out like the l322. L322 had more hidden storage compartments. Larger seat storage and door storage. Extra space in the tire boot. For a decent extra tool kit. The l405 air suspension seems much less likely to break down at 100k. The electronics work much better. The sunroof is massive. Its definitely more luxurious. If 405 had that same little bit of storage, i wouldnt mind the inch less of cabin roof. It gets better mpg. Its 3x faster. It handles like a bmw. I miss the box but the box looked y2k? Its a super blend of sexy and off road. It is supposedly more reliable than the 322. And that helps the pain of less grit . It does seem like it would perform better off road. Being lighter and newer technology and dimensions. Its finese i feel is unmatched. Its not a truck. Its not an suv. Its something else. .

This is a 2016 Range Rover Vogue SE SDV8. A car of this age will develop faults, and will only be as reliable as its service history is good. A well looked-after car should be relatively trouble-free, but that's no guarantee. Luxury cars have more things on them to break 😂

You should definitely buy a 5.0 S/C V8, and then you should let us borrow it. On a serious note, I don't think diesel will rocket ahead of petrol again like it did in the last year, the number of diesel vehicles on the road is going to start declining and in the medium term that means there will be a low demand and theoretically lower prices. If you can afford to run a petrol one though just go for it

Hi, your rear gate is not working properly, it is look like that bottom part is not properly adjusted or tie rods are overstretched because many heavy people very often siting on it. Then bottom part need more time to lift and sensor on top gate sensing obstacle so gate will stop to continue to closing and avoid to crash to bottom gate in inappropriate ankle. This is common problem with all L405 heavy person sitting or bumping on it very often.

It's a nice video, but.... 1. Door cards are totally different than the L322. 2. Rear space is significantly improved on the L405 compared to the L322. Check the wheelbase measurements as that is where most of the increase is 4. Construction. L322 relies on front and rear subframes to support suspension, differentials and engine. No subframes on the L405 and that is a good thing 5. The interior is of course inspired by the L322, but everything is new. Seats might have been carried over. Same with the arm rests.
@BuckleUpShow
@BuckleUpShow Год назад
Hi Jonathan, thanks for the feedback! The door cards in this, with the exception not some more gloss plastic and worse-quality door levers, are impressively similar to those in my L322. There is indeed a 42 mm increase in the wheelbase between the (second-facelifted) L322 and L405. This translates into slightly better access into the rear seats, and possibly a smidge more knee room, but not a particularly noticeable improvement at all. I do mention the all-aluminium unibody structure in the video 😁 The interior cannot be described as having "everything is new" if a pretty fundamental element (seats) are carried over. The seats themselves are identical, and the dashboard materials, layout and structure almost a direct transplant. Marginal updates in a few areas, and the moving of some buttons, but in a few cases, the materials actually felt like a small downgrade. Not sure if you've driven an L322 back to back with the L405, but while the exterior has some stark contrasts, the interior really doesn't.

@Buckle Up Yes I'm aware of the laws relating to seat belts I've had a Full licence since before 1983 and Range Rovers were part of our company car fleet in 1980. The point I was making as I'm sure you are aware of, is that you don't seem to be wearing one when you're driving!
@BuckleUpShow
@BuckleUpShow Год назад
Few things, Ross: 1) No, I wasn't aware of the point you were trying to make - I missed it entirely as it was such a ridiculous suggestion that I wouldn't be wearing a seatbelt. (My name is not Rishi Sunak) 2) If a tree falls over in the forest, it DOES make a noise even if you aren't there to hear it 3) Every time I lift my left elbow off the armrest you can just see the belt against my coat (the belt is slightly darker than the coat is). 4) Do you REALLY think that in a modern car I'd be able to drive it for the best part of 40 minutes while filming the driving segment without it beeping at me constantly? 5) I have raw footage of me putting the belt on at the start of the driving segment. 6) This RU-vid channel is literally called "Buckle Up", it would be a poor show if I wasn't able to put one on. 7) Anyone with half a brain cell can work out that you cannot see the entirety of the B-Pillar due to the camera framing, so you therefore have to check other areas of the frame to see if one is being worn (but I'm sure you're aware of this) - the way my coat creases up weirdly near my left hip is another clue that there is, in fact, a seatbelt there. 8) When the Instagram post goes up for this video, I will include the bit where I put my seatbelt on for you - your concern for my health is greatly appreciated :)

The L322 ran from 2002-2012, the L405 from 2012-2022. The "66" on this plate tells you the model was registered in the second half of 2016 (technically between September 2016 and February 2017). No trick numberplate here, the fact it's not recognised simply means that the person who purchased the car after we had filmed it has installed a private numberplate ☺️
