When I listen to something of this magnitude, I just cannot get out of my mind, "How in the world could anyone on this earth actually sit down with pen and paper and write something like this... it is completely beyond my understanding." i mean Rachmaninoff had to hear this in his head - in complete detail of all that music can contain... and then write it down? Simply unbelievable - and all the other composers, as well!
In addition to watch Lang Lang sit down and play the awesome music is quite a feat. I have played the piano in my day and never in my wildest dreams could I ever master this music. He is awesome with his expression and talent to be sure. I love it. Well done to Lang Lang and the orchestra. Beautiful!!!
@@judithbenton9169 Oh come on, Judith. I play some of the greatest piano works in my dreams. You should hear me... So, if I can, so can you dream the same as I do... maybe you and I could dream up a fantastic duet! :-)
It was an open air concert which made it more difficult for the conductor and the orchestra to follow the nuances of his musical interpretation in terms of tempo, so he took the initiative and gave helpful clues for the orchestra with his left hand base in some crucial moments. He IS an excellent musician.
This is not intense at all. It is at best college level. I've never listened to this piece played more straight and non musically in my life. Go listen to Anna Federova....
As an a man of the visual arts I see that of course he has the grace and panache of movement to match his musical genius, his beauty is all brought together in his musicality. I'm no musician but I know beauty!
Grace and "panache" of movement? The effeminate hand gestures and the mawkish facial "expressions" are enough to turn off many of his viewers, while at the same time enrapturing many others. And why on earth do you refer to him as a genius, just because he plays concertos that practically every professional pianist in the world has been playing for decades and decades? There are few words that are as freely thrown about as "genius". Besides this word, commenters in these pages can't get along without using words like "passion", "emotion", "dynamics", "phrasing", "rubato", and who-knows-what-else.
I ended up sobbing for minutes after watching Lang Lang perform Tchaikovsky's 1st piano sonata. He totally channelled the composer, Mankind and human endeavour, and he did it better than Argerich (in 1975), Federova or Barenboim. They are all greats, but from here I'm clear that Lang Lang surpasses them.
When it comes to the piano, Rachmaninoff is my absolute favourite composer and Lang Lang brings life to the music in his faultless execution. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 Magnificent.
fabulous music Lang Lang is renowned for his extraordinary skills and mastery in playing Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto. His performance showcases his immense technical ability, musicality, and passion for the music. Lang Lang's interpretation of Rachmaninoff's complex and demanding composition is characterized by his exceptional finger dexterity, precise articulation, and dynamic control. Furthermore, he brilliantly captures the emotional depth and nuances of the music, utilizing his exceptional sense of phrasing, timing, and musical expression. Lang Lang's dedication to continuously refine his technique and refine his understanding of Rachmaninoff's compositions has solidified his reputation as one of the greatest interpreters of this concerto.😄😄
Stunning Performance!! ... Lang Lang is so talented! Even when the music stops, I hear this in my mind: great orchestra as well........ My Mother was a music teacher, & grew up listening to this gorgeous music..... The wonderful power of his amazing hands: he represents passion & such feeling. Thanks for posting this. 🙏😃
Not many would play infront of a public crowd such as this with the constant noise. Lang Lang is a true musician making classical music accessible to everyone
I love how he brings out the full mood of the piece, but always keeps a positive attitude. He's like that person he keeps everyone smiling during their darkest moments.
Rachmaninoff was a pure genius! This piece is truly wonderful .....and the genius that is Lang Lang, playing such a beautiful piece of music, sends me into another place! I could listen to him all day long! Truly wonderful and inspiring! I always believe that if you're feeling low, just sit and listen to a beautiful classical piece, just like Rachmaninoff and it will definitely lift your spirits! Well done Lang Lang for lifting mine! Beautiful! X
@@user-qr3lf3ns8j Physical grace? Don't you think "effeminate mannerisms" would be a more accurate way of describing his painstakingly choreographed theatrics? I don't know how he gets away with all this. His audiences, naturally, allow themselves to gaze adoringly at these cringy affectations, the likes of which would've horrified and embarrassed Liberace.
It seems to me they've used side-chain compression to duck the orchestra behind Lang Lang. I don't like this recording. But you can hear what he's doing at least.
Extraordinary and memorable for all the best reasons. The concerto seems much more alive outdoors, as if the fresh air invigorates everyone. Lang Lang - as always - raises the bar forever with this piece. It's the finest performance I've ever heard. The crowd must be huge, and there is background white noise in the quiet moments, but it's worth it for what it also gives. I would bet many listeners in that auddience realized they were hearing something really great.
Lang Lang is most likely from another realm the realm where music was conceived his artistry playing the piano is dynamically unbelievable out of this world bravo Lang lang. Magnifico,
Lang Lang is amazing! And Yuja is also amazing. Two of my favorite pianists of today! Bravo to Rachmaninoff also! The man had HUGE hands! And a huge heart for the emotion he put into Piano Concertos # 2 & # 3!
Rachmaninoff's genius in composing a work of such magnitude leaves me without words. And Lang Lang interprets it with dazzling skill - entirely from memory. The human brain is indeed unfathomably awesome. What perfect bliss to sit on my patio this glorious summer morning in Johannesburg and revel in the music!
I have to keep saying that memorization for pianists is the least of their concerns. If you ever see a pianist making his way toward the piano, holding a bunch of music sheets, let me know.
I believe that this is the most beautiful concerto ever writen (my opinion only). and I always find it interesting the different ways each pianist interprets the composition, the touch the, feel, the expression, the interpretation of the piece, not good not bad and always beautiful.
@@billgaetz337 yes, all those emotions expressed in this piece and the 3. are piercing my heart. The most beloved rendition for me is by Horowitz (Nr. 3 NYPO 1978). If you haven’t listened to this yet, please do! Warm regards
I'm ninety and was eligible for my degree in the London Conservatory of Music when I was thirteen and then was singing classical music at sixteen and then after a series of life misfortunes it all went away , a long and sad story but it left me with a love for all great music, (and a complete disgust for most of today's music. I had the happiness to shake his hands for twice after his recitals in London and Lyon! I'm a Brazilian fan and it was an emotion to my whole life! I will never forget! Thanks God!
Mr Lang Lang is a gifted and highly talented pianist! The way he immerse himself into great music make me feel the beautiful side of humanity! I truly believe he is very hard-working in practicing and playing the piano.
Oh my goodness!! I cannot sit still listening to this passionate music, and Lang Lang - incredible performance. The orchestra, perfect! Thank you so much especially UTUBE!!!
I was just imaging Sergei composing this concerto in his study. I imagine Sergei’s piano sounded pretty close to how Lang Lang performed his music on this night. Sergei from Heaven, “That’s it.”
Lang Lang's interpretation is very bright and enthusiastic, especially in the beginning part is full of grandeur. Of course, the conductor and the orchestra have a tacit cooperation with him! Very brilliant!
Lang Lang brings something new to the world of music, specifically classical, in his playing and interpretation of it. In ten notes he will let the audience know his life and to others the sadness and joy of it through his playing. We are the beneficiaries of this wonderful interpretation by someone who has experienced through his mother and father and his life so far the push to win by his father and the kindness and love of his mother which is transferred to his playing and that playing takes us to our emotions. He will make us laugh, cry, ponder, all with the light or powerful touch of his fingers and the magnificent expression of his face while he plays showing how he feels about the music from one bar to the next. It’s almost a secret what tonality he will choose in the interpretation of the composer’s original intent but more than that he also conveys a magical quality of his own that springs from his mind and fingers the concertos he plays are like nothing we’ve ever heard before.
Every note soooooo clean! Such a perfect performance. A most beautiful setting. Bravi to everyone, and Lang Lang!. Bravissimo for being so exquisite! Will never grow tired of this performance! After 4 years!!!!
The Covid-19 pandemic has made us understand what is truly valuable in life…listening to a prodigious performance by Lang Lang…when are we going to see you play again like this😩‼️
As ALWAYS Lang Lang you are magnificent of a pianist❣️👏I heard so many fine pianist, but you’re superb. I’m 84 years old and still watching & hearing you❣️💋🎶

Outstanding Performance from Lang Lang, Conductor and Orchestra!!! This music is so relaxing and therapeutic! Glory and Praise to God for so much Talent and Dedication!!! I enjoyed it so much!
Sergei Rachmaninoff was born on April 1, 1873. Sergei Rachmaninoff was born in Semyonovo, near Novgorod in the Russian Empire (present-day Russia). Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 is a masterpiece in the world of classical music. Composed by Sergei Rachmaninoff, this concerto is known for its passionate and emotional melodies, intricate piano passages, and sweeping orchestral accompaniment. It is a deeply expressive and romantic composition that showcases Rachmaninoff's exceptional skill as both a composer and a pianist. The concerto has become one of the most beloved and frequently performed works in the piano concerto repertoire. It is a true testament to Rachmaninoff's talent and has captivated audiences for generations.
Thank you for this video. I love to watch Lang Lang’s hands when he plays. They seem to have been born on the keyboard. In real life, you can’t see too much in a live concert. This video shows his hands and also displays the orchestra members at the important moments. Of course to listen, is bliss.
That's exactly the OPPOSITE of what a soloist should do! The latter's sacred duty is to acknowledge the audience FIRST! Then, go ahead with all the hugging, kissing, and hand-shaking. This getting up and turning one's back to the audience, no matter how often you may witness it, is simply bad form.
@@richardvolpe7664 I am not sure if that is what the soloist normally should do or not out of protocol, but Lang Lang did it right, because without the orchestra, there wouldn't be a performance, without a performance, there wouldn't be an audience, so Lang Lang did right to acknowledge the orchestra first and second the audience. Respecting the orchestra boosts moral and would benefit future performances. It should therefore be standard to thank the orchestra first to my opinion. Technically it would be not logical to turn to the audience first because applause can last for a long time, it would then be awkward to turn back to the orchestra and hug it out, because the audience usually expect an encore.
Off the charts brilliant. Even the dynamics on the opening chords were just stunning. I think Rachmaninov was taking direct dictation from God when he composed this magnificent concerto
Wherever Lang Lang was transported to when he so exquisitely embraced every piano key in the glorious chord progression at the end of the second movement….I went there with him. And I’m not coming back, ever.
What I admire the most, about Lang Lang is, the fact he has nothing to read in front of him, just his total immersion in his interpretations and expressions of very complex arrangements,… with an ease that can scare the most accomplished conductor. Sometimes, I wonder if he’s off to a musical heaven when he closes his eyes. A testament to the “impossibilities” we can unlock within the human brain!
Watching/listening to this Concerto always makes me think of my beautiful piano teacher Mrs. Olsen. The was the very first concerto she made me listen. It then opened the door of classic piano music for me.
Lang Lang is "all in" and his intense musical commitment gives the orchestra permission to join him. There is no holding back. He is a pianist, dancer and singer all wrapped into one. His rhythm is sublime. He knows just when to punch a good syncopation - I guess he's a drummer as well! This is a stunning performance. Thank you for sharing it with us.
A soloist's musical commitment doesn't "give the orchestra permission to join him". The SOLE requirement of the orchestra is to watch and follow the conductor. Incidentally, what is "sublime rhythm supposed to mean?
So true, you have seen the totality of his genius I have been awestruck by his combination of physical grace and musicality, what talent, no wonder he can master Rachmaninov. His genius was a catalyst for other sublime talents to follow and and those who were there all pitched in to help Lang Lang's performance, collaborative magic!
Grandissimo Lan Lang . Buona fortuna !
This is my favorite piece of music in the whole world ever.....every note of it....every passage is stirring and I have listened so often on You Tube and from a cd playing at home while I'm doing other things...especially on cold rainy days. I know it by heart....can hum along because I know what's coming next. Have several sections of this in modified piano music so a less accomplished pianist like myself could play them. Lang Lang's performance is mind blowing. He has this internalized in his soul and muscle memory. Some of the time he is not even looking at the keys. !!!! Rachmaninoff's music and style is so distinct I can recognize it when I hear any portion of his music playing. Here's something interesting, which I realized the first time I ever heard this well known pop song by Eric Carmen way back when... Eric Carmen "All By Myself". The verse borrows from 2nd movement of Sergei Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. (Carmen lifted melodies from classical music in other songs too.) Having found it was not, only after the record had been issued, Carmen had to come to an agreement with the Rachmaninoff estate. Early versions, therefore, only give writing credits to Carmen, but later versions also credit Rachmaninoff."
There are no adequate words to describe the brilliance that is Lang Lang. Rachmaninoff is somewhere just overjoyed at this performance. Lang Lang pours every ounce of his being, every cell, into his performances. How blessed we are to receive them. Thank you, Lang Lang, my life is now complete. ❤️
Fantastic!! He is a darling to watch. He looks as if he loves the music so much. I love him. A fabulous performance. Really superb. And the conductor, and orchestra are also superb. Totally sublime the whole thing. A beautiful film, and perfect sound! Thank you!
I can't stop going back to this video. Everything about it is riveting. I've been fortunate to hear/see Lang Lang here in Santa Barbara, and he played an all Rachmaninoff program. It was the great third piano concerto and Rhapsody on a Them of Paganini. It brought tears to my eyes. This particular concerto, the second, sounds/feels like reading a Tolstoy or Pasternak novel.
Lang Lang plays the piano with so much soul & heart, emotions thru is beautiful fingers! I watch & listen to this video concert twice or more a day since I found this video. ♥️

This performance is Lang Lang, Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto 2, Filarmonica della Scala, cond. Esa-Pekka Salonen, Milan, Piazza del Duomo, 45,000 people. May 26, 2014.
Yes, i too become so emotional when I listen to it, and think how can mankind produce such beauty and then do the horrendous act of war-- and, kill so many people. This, and other great music takes my mind off of it…….I just watched a short documentary on Rachmaninoff life, and it, of course, covered this powerful and emotionally beautiful piece. I watched it so many times in the past… Lang Lang’s performance with Sydney symphony at Sydney Opera House (Australia) is one of my favorite.
This young man is quite the showman. Great talent and great hair. He certainly puts the passion in this spectacular piece. Tchaikovsky would be thrilled.
I apologize profusely. Thank you so much for correcting me! I adore Rachmaninov. What a ridiculous mistake. Rachmaninov would be thrilled Plus my hair comment was unnecessary! Thank you again. I do adore both composers. But thanks take was huge.
This was totally AMAZING!!! Great pianist, great music, and the Conductor and orchestra were all extraordinary. Such clarity in all instruments and timing...The Conductor and the orchestra should be named here.
From what I understood : « Lang Lang played with the Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala, which was conducted by Finnish maestro Esa-Pekka Salonen. The concert featured Le Sacre du printemps, or The Rite of Spring, by Russian composer Igor Stravinsky and the Piano Concerto No. 2 by another Russian composer, Sergei Rachmaninoff. »
Such genius on the piano, Lang-Lang graces the world with his gift of music with making the piano SING as we all are transported to a place of heavenly bliss! Amazing!
