@@rajnish8918 he wasn't no gentleman when he tortured the great Ali, it was really mean spirited. Ali actually took Mike aside seconds before the fight and told him kick Holmes' ass and avenge him,,,done
@@pputnam100 it’s a pro sport. Ali didn’t have to fight Holmes. He chose to do that and he paid the consequences. Can’t blame Holmes. Blame the coaches, promoters, and the organizations, not Holmes
+Joe Tabner You should try to do something positive with your life instead of doing the devil's work trying to divide black folks. Being a cowardly sociopath is no way to go through life.
I mean after that Mike Tyson fight he did go on to have 12 round wars with Evander Holyfield and Oliver McCall. And he even beat Ray Mercer. And didn’t truly hang up the gloves professionally until 2002 when he beat Butterbean. So even though he wasn’t the best version of himself against Mike Tyson no doubt he was still a very dangerous heavyweight.
@@damreeds2360 When he made his comeback, he was much better trained. He took the fight with Tyson on relatively short notice, after having been retired for two years. By the time he fought Mercer and Holyfield, he had several tune up fights and was training seriously.
@@johnulmer1622 It doesn't matter the training, Holmes was an undefeated and unreachable champion, Holmes was fast and agile but against Tyson it seemed like an adult x child fight, I've never seen such an unprepared fight like that. Holmes was made of a doll and tyson proved himself to the world, now against the worst version of holmes in health and physique, holyfield auge almost lost, you can understand how this shit works.
Why are people so mad at Holmes, he's being honest. Tyson had him on the run, he had ONE shot to maybe get momentum going his way, his arm gets caught in the rope (which did happen) and he thinks to himself "OH SHIT....all is lost" and you people hate Holmes for telling his perspective. Jesus....what's wrong with you people
I understand u clearly but holmes didnt respect ali he was making fun of ali ofc i understand the people, but all these comments i so negative please people muhammed ali got hes revenge through tyson and thats it.
+Andro Libre Because nobody likes a whiny, bellyaching, bitching sore loser. And even though Holmes was a great boxer, he was also a very sore loser. Not the way a true champ behaves.
you know what? FUCK Ali....all Ali ever did was make fun of his opponents...he antagonized Liston...what's the big deal about holmes making fun of ali? part of the game
karlos roberts can Holmes beats Joe Frazier!! Can he beasts George Foreman.. he almost lost to Erne Shavers.. he almost lost to Kin Norton. Again .. can beats George Foreman when George was the champion of the world !! Ali did beat George Foreman.
The media poison the public regarding Holmes. When he defeated Ali, he became the villain although Ali should have defended against Holmes in 1977 or 1978 instead of Evangelista and Spinks.. Before he fought Cooney, he was the bad guy although he and his family were receiving racial death threats and his property was vanadlized. Then after the Cooney fight, Holmes might have lost if it was ONLY a 12 round fight and Cooney was not deducted points for low blows. Holmes cemented his legacy as the ultimate HEEL boxer when he said Rocky Marciano could not carry his jock strap although no one talks about how Pete Marciano went to the press prior to the fight and said that he did not want to see Holmes toe his brother's record.
@@jonathanwhite1265 So what that Pete Marciano said that about Holmes? It was a natural reaction about the memory of his late brother Rocky. Very different it would have been if the same Rocky came up with that: Holmes was a great champion and one of the best, but he brought all the pandemonium that happened after his first fight against Michael Spinks to himself, with his unnecessary declarations about Rocky and his jock. Obviously I will never know how it feels to lose just before tying up such an important record like the one Larry was about to, but still his one was undoubtedly a classless reaction.
The hardest punch I ever saw Larry Holmes take was that nasty overhand right thrown by Ernie Shavers. He floored Holmes and how Larry got back up was beyond me. Holmes staggered around and the only reason the ref didn't stop it right then was because Larry was champ. Had that been anyone else, the fight would have been over. Holmes managed to make it through the remainder of the round and went on to win the fight.
@@whyyeseyec That tells you how hard the blow was. He was virtually knocked out & blacked out completely. The fact that happened he just fell straight down. The hit on the canvass woke him up.
@ Johnny B--I didn't see your comment until After I wrote: I don't know, man. When Ernie Shavers hit Holmes, I'm not the only one who thought he was dead!
The only Boxer not to make any exuse of his losses is Mike Tyson & that goes for the rest too, Larry a great Boxer a legend, But always making exuses, Didn't the loss to Mike that well.
"My arm got caught in the rope.....OH SHIT!!" LOL , with Tyson coming in like a great white shark looking for the kill, oh shit is definately the thought to cross u mind, ha!!
I never followed boxing much, but I do remember Ali and Cosell always on TV. I just watched Tyson and Holmes in slow motion. It takes a while to see it, but just before Holmes is KO'd, his arm does get tangled in a rope. I must say Holmes was defending himself pretty well until that point. He was on the run, but wow what would any sane person be doing with a young Mike Tyson after them? I agree with you. I think most people would just jump out of the ring and run.
At 38, you have to give it to Larry to even get in the ring with Mike, let alone get up. Those years, courage and hope is what you have. To all the guys since Jack Johnson to get in the ring Mano y Mano with someone ready to tear your head off, salute!
Uhm, what are you talking about? Ali was 37 when he faced and won vs SHAVERS, Evander was 36 and 37 when he faced Lennox in Lennox's prime. Lennox himself was well into his 30s when he reached his prime, and when Larry faced Tyson there was less than 2 years since his retirement, which is LESS time than some active fighters have between fights. 38 is not that fucking old. "Courage and hope is all you have", lmao what a bunch of corny bullshit. The reason Larry agreed to fight Tyson was because he thought he could beat Tyson, he has said this himself. Foreman was into his 40s when he faced and took the heavyweight championship from Moorer. 38 is not that old.
Honesty being revealed from an old school champ! Mike is a great MAN as is his former opponent that can admit to him being the man in boxing that he was and probably still is!
Larry was a great Champion, meanest left jab of all-time! Tyson rocked him 4 real! Holmes was Ali's sparring partner for years so of course he knew him! Nobody beats father time, especially in boxing!
Holmes is one of the great heavyweight Champs of all time. This guy just does not get the respect he deserves. He was a class act too. A true gentleman. He fought everyone and whooped them all. I.M.O he won the first fight against Michael Spinks and at that time that win would have made him 49-0. He would have tied Marcianos' record. In all fairness I never saw the second fight Holmes vs. Spinks 2 so I can't give an honest opinion. Young and in his prime Holmes beats a young in his prime Tyson I.M.O.
I remwber the Holmes vs. Jerry Cooney fight in August 1980. Was great. Larry Holmes will never be forgotten anymore than Iron Mike. Hats off to these two great champions. 👍
Its hard comparing fighters who never fought. The old gets replaced by the new. Appreciate them for being great in their own time. Larry was done when he fought Mike. Young Larry might have won but we will never know.
Real boxing fans know just how special Larry Holmes was as a fighter. He took the Ali paradigm and made it his own with an amazing jab great movement and a pretty damn good straight right hand.
Larry Homes Talks About Fight With Mike Tyson. "I was 38, my endurance was less than when I was 20, my testosterone count was way down from when I was 16, my muscle fibers were dying one at a time never to be replaced, my fast twitch fibers were becoming scar tissue fibroblasts....."
Larry Holmes it very honest and funny when remember the match with Mike...and is true your uppercut was block to the rope... very funny moment..now :)))
It is funny how easily Tyson dominated Holmes destroying him in 4 rounds. Larrt went on to fight for another 10 years, fighting top fighters like Evander Holyfield and NOBODY beat up Larry Holmes. They got the decision but Holmes was competitive. In his PRIME...meaning pre Don King Tyson was one of the greatest fighters of all time.
After the 1st knockdown , Holmes is trying to shake off the effects of the knockdown. You clearly see Holmes shaking his head. Why he says he slipped is beyond me.
Even Tyson says he was lucky since holmes was past his prime just like Ali was past his prime when he fought holmes...the three are big legends although nobody could compare to Ali
My ass Holmes' arm got caught on the rope. He was getting beaten all over the ring, and got off several uppercuts that looked like an old lady threw them. Not falling for your revisionist history, Holmes.
After watching the highlights, Larry had a pretty good shot with that upper cut. Tysons left arm was tied up at the time and his chin perfectly exposed. Not saying Larry could have come back but, would have been interesting to see how Mike would have taken the shot.
Let's be honest, Larry only beat Ali because he was already getting sick by the time they fought. 1960s or 1970s Ali would have KO that man in two rounds.
Tim Crawford Larry was after Ali no win situation for him. In modern times no boxer went to war like Ali. Larry was a great fighter Lennox Lewis was almost identical to him. These two guys don't get the credit they deserve. Like Floyd who lasted to decades as champ doesn't get the love he deserves. Some fighters just aren't as beloved.
Yep...i said that when i watched the fight with my late dad....dad didnt like either tyson or holmes...i always gave respect to the champ of the day..this fight i said holmes can beat tyson if he takes Tyson to the later rounds....
A slip that he got caught for and he was buzzed s desperate when he got his hand caught on the ropes trying to throw that uppercut before getting smashed like a 🎃 pumpkin
If nothing else, Larry was a tough SOB. I'm still wondering how the hell he got up from that right hook from Earnie Shavers, then went on to knock Shavers out.
his arm did get caught in the rope but christ he was knocked down by 2 heavy blows, mike was going in for kill and he was bouncing holmes all over the ring going for the finish and larrys legs were far from stable, the state he was in i couldn't see him planting his feet and generating the power to keep a killer like tyson off him when he was in the finishing mode like he was in at the end of that fourth....... the start of the fourth was great though he went into vintage holmes mode bouncing on his toes popping his jab off at mike for the first minute, just couldnt sustain it... plus with tysons bob and weave approach with those fast hooks and uppercuts... standing straight up is a baddddd move
Larry Holmes has two persona When interviewed about Mike tyson he's sitting besides Joe Frazier and next is Ali he's talking down on Mike. But in this interview it's the opposite. Funny how people change minds in between different surroundings 😅
not sure if it'd had made that much difference considering Tyson was in finishing mode, and I've never spotted it before but his arm was properly caught up on the ropes... maybe that uppercut would have thrown Tyson's timing off, who knows...
Piston like jab number 3 on the greatest of all time heavy on alot of lists ,my all time favorite heavy weight and one of the most disrespected champions of ALL TImE to this daytime your proof!
I saw that uppercut attempt when his right got caught in the rope and wondered what if... That's the same punch he put out Mike "Hercules" Weaver in a similar situation in a hell of a fight.
