Great breakdown Skippy. I'm thankful for your willingness to point out the parts where the episode excelled and areas that it didn't. It's easy to be caught up in the flashy animation and action set pieces while glossing over the less well executed portions. I liked the opening b&w montage for Kid. I agree the Momo content outside of the DBZ homage was too long and unnecessary. I will commend Henry for helping to make Misery from Big Mom genuinely terrifying compared to the manga. Also the moving stills instead of the same sequence over and over in the Flower Capital was a welcomes change and probably helped the production time wise. Overall a very good debut for Henry. I hope he gets another chance to direct either here or elsewhere in the future.

Agreed,lots of ideas, fun flashy animation and action scenes, but filler problems and it did not drop my jaw as it did or was as amazing as Episode 1062. But still a great job for a first timer

Totally agree with your critique to the episode. Being his first work as a director truly shows its deficiencies but there's lot of potencial as you mentioned. I think he aim to high and could not deliver as an ED, but with all that crazy fighting choreography Henry has been showing since he joined Toei Staff, he could perform well as an AD.

While not a perfect dayview by any means it was still a great effort from Henry, and it had a bunch of amazing moments, even with the padding at the beginning. Hopefully Henry just keeps learning more and more in the future. Keep up the great work Skippy!!

this episode was so odd but still good imo. The fight was amazing, it had some phenomenal animation, choreography and great compositing in the Misery part edit: I agree with you in the cohesion was a bit odd, still think it was "ok" though but the cuts to the flower capital was so weird, and completely spoilt the atmosphere at those bits, like law's final attack lost its impact for me since it switched to the flower capital. I'm really hoping Henry becomes better at directing overall because I think he can become a PHENOMENAL director

I don't mind the cut to the capital cause you can see the scale of Law's attack in the background which was kinda cool. Only bits that were to long for me were the Momo part and Kid's intro at the beginning but they don't detract from the episode too much as it means the bulk of the fighting is well paced. Plus Momo finally made progress so I can't be too mad.

@@petplatypusI do get that, I think the way the cut to the capital was done could have been better though. I think my main issue with it is just the sudden switch to the fire festival music, if the music was still the same as for law's final attack and slowly faded away I think the same intense atmosphere would have been kept. The same applies to the momonksuke scene, constantly switching from the fire festival music to the one that was playing in momonosuke's scene was just odd to me as the music played a part in the emotions momo was feeling, switching the music so abruptly was just odd and took away from the moment for me thats just me tho

@@solty_I felt that about the music as well. It ruined the atmosphere for me. For example, when the episode was switching between serious and light hearted, from Momo to the festival, I was just laughing and wondering what the hell was happening. It felt more like a RU-vid short about someone making jokes about two different situations. He should have kept the serious music if he was gonna do that, not awkwardly cut the music. Also was not a fan of the start of the episode. It started up interesting, then started dragging along and started feeling like padding, then he cuts to Yamato. It caught my interest at the beginning, I lost interest in the middle wondering where all those flashbacks were going to, then he dropped the ball for not having a “conclusion/bang” for Kidd’s part by cutting to Yamato. A good execution of something similar would be Shintani’s flashback before Luffy’s red roc. All those flashbacks built up to the punch. Henry’s flashbacks built up to Kidd’s charging before cutting to Yamato screaming at the blob

I don't understand why they didn't rearranged some panels and make it compiling all the fights into one episode just like Sanji and Zoro episodes? I think this isn't Henry's fault but it sucks that they shouldn't do adapt 1:1 from the manga and let it done on its own without Yamato and Momo stuff

I think the smirkyness really does fit law. He acts like he's not "one of THOSE pirates," but at heart, he's just as goofy as law and kidd

Fantastic analysis as always 💯 I personally found this episode really great! The Momo parts were whatever for me since it's been going on for a long while just like its manga counterpart. He ate up some great animation and art though :)) Loved the Kid recap at the beginning. It didn't feel long or padded out for me since it was visually appealing to look at. The fight was done justice. Absolutely thrilled while sewing Mother Misery and Damned Punk. In terms of Law's big move, I thought it was done well. The fire festival section of it killed it a bit for me at first, but thinking upon it more, I kinda appreciate what Henry trying to do there with showing the contrast of Wano citizens' happiness and the mayhem going on on top of Onigashima, even if it didn't pay off as much as it could have.

I feel like we cant harsly critque a debut director but still has some critism for improvement i liked what Henrey did this episode it was a nice change of pace and has his own unqiue style of direction makes him standout as a director and his team nailed it out of the park

Haven't seen the episode myself but i keep seeing the same complains particually a.bout the pacing all day. aswell as it not being very cohesive. But I hope to see Thurlow continue to grow as a director as he had as a animator. Barring all that this was still a historic episode. Once I saw the credits I called this Gaijn Piece with how many non JP staff where on it. Even IJQ like what the hell! Thurlow really called everyone of he's contacts for this spactacular.

Completely accurate assessment. Stunning animation throughout, but a real mess in terms of its direction. Packed full of great ideas, but not woven together with any real rhyme or reason. Especially apparently in the A part. B part was a lot stronger, but questionable music choices and a lack of building anticipation left it feeling flat in spite of all the fantastic movement.

I would actually put this episode in line with 986 where there are a ton of very well-made animation string together with somewhat odd direction. But for a directorial debut I would love for Henry to do more in the future. It takes more than one episode to do that, and this is a great start.

It would be a shame if he never directed again, considering he brought so much talent on the episode. I know some people don't like him(mainly for his opinions about the industry), but he's a pretty resourceful guy to have regardless of what anyone thinks. For me there were a few problems.Coloring was kinda weird,especially at the end, the storyboard was crap during action, making some really good cuts looks really awkward, and yes henry, there is such a thing as too much 3-tone shading, not everything has to look like REDLINE lol. OST choices be damned, it was still a feat nonetheless, and it's a feat to be celebrated by Henry and the staff, despite the final result being unpolished. I'm very happy for him, and I hope he learns from this episode and the mistakes that he made with this one, by listening to others, and improves on it, so he can direct an even better episode in the future, with a polished storyboard and better direction. I wish him all the best, truly. Very exciting nonetheless!!!!!

Considering he has so many friends and contacts from non-anime animator both from Disney and Cartoon network is insane TOEI should used this opportunity for future episodes especially the Gear 5th because it really suit for him to direct that moment so I don't mind if they chose him to direct again

Yeah. Episode was awesome, but something was off the entire time. And OST placement was so wierd to me. Especially how it cut off each time it has shown the flower capital. If it was supposed to be funny, it didn't really land for me. The whole episode had insane animation but felt really wierd!

Honestly think you're a bit nicer to this episode than I am. I feel like the intro, while a neat idea, feels somewhat misplaced in the greater context of the episode. It doesn't really enhance the episode, and instead feels like its a part of the middle of the episode that got randomly moved to the beginning. Outside of that, while I agree with what you said regarding the lack of flow, I feel like it bothered me a bit more by it, given that it makes for awkward cuts that prevent the action from flowing as well as it can, to the point that it seriously hurts the impact of Puncture Wille. The lack of focus really bring the episode down, which is a shame to me because it is really well animated. Wish that Henry had a smaller episode, or time as an assistant beforehand, that allowed him to iron out these issues before he took on a bigger episode. Good video either way, and I hope you're doing well!

I love the 2-minute opening with kid so you calling it padding is awful to hear. Beside from Momo's filler scene I don't understand what you mean it feels nurtured and camera is too close while showing one of my favorite sequences in entire arc with law and kid also saying law making a joke is out of character is stupid. Also I hate that basically your saying at the end of the video that the animators carry this episode. I love your vids but this is a rare L for you I'm sorry.

@@SkippyOP I liked it because in the manga big mom just talks about law and for some reason doesn't mention the clear fact that kid just broke her arm it felt this joke was from manga even though it wasn't. I still love your videos I just don't agree with most of this video. If this your thoughts on the episode I'm not going to hate everything you do now, I'll just sadly never watch this certain video again because I love the episode and I was just disappointed with this video. Still love your vids though.

@@SkippyOP If anything, I actually think this video really solidified to me that your perspective truly is something that is invaluable because of not only your knowledge but your honesty as well. I enjoyed the episode but there's also definitely a lot of room for polish and I'm glad you took the time to note this. Henry is an excellent animator and full of some awesome ideas and for his debut, it was a fantastic beginning. I want to see him evolve more as the series goes on and I certainly want him to work on the pacing and cohesion as you said. Keep up the great work!
