Emily, I kid you not, when I was watching the verdict a Halloween parade went through my street with a marching band. So Brooks bends his head in despair, and suddenly there are drums drumming and trombones trumping joyfully and the timing was so perfectly in sync it was eerie... like on purpose. That was something...
@@jenniferthomas5926 aww I hope you're well! It was really so strange at first I thought it's a part of the live feed... And then I'm like oh... It's outside. Like a massive rejoicing energy. It's over, huge hugs!
I'm kind of glad he represented himself. There won't be that taint on a lawyer who defended him. He saved at least one person from having that on THEIR conscience.
Yes having to represent him would be difficult for any lawyer and even with a lawyer the outcome would probably have been the same except the trial would have ended sooner
It also removes that chance of appeal on the grounds that he wasn't represented properly. He wasn't represented properly and it was entirely his fault.
I feel like he has never been held truly accountable in his life and didn't think he would be once again. I think he is shocked and in disbelief that someone finally held him accountable for his actions and that he couldn't get his way.
His mother said he blacks out and doesn't remember what he did. He's been getting away with that lie his whole life. She deserves the hate mail she gets. It never occurred to her that he just doesn't want to accept responsibility?
His criminal record shows he's been escalating for years, hopefully lessons will be learned concerning bail etc. He appears to have no remorse for his crimes & will already be planning his appeal.
I’m glad Ericka’s battery was also kept in, many times the lesser charges are dismissed when larger crimes are committed at the same time. She deserves the justice as well. My heart is with all impacted by this tragedy. So unnecessary.
Being hit by 76 GUILTY verdicts is nothing in comparison to the toll of a red Ford SUV. Sad that this is as much justice as those families will ever know. 💔💜💔
With how fast they deliberated, I'm imagining them walking into the jury room all like, "Ok, each person grab forms for 5 or 6 counts and just start checking any boxes that say 'Guilty' or 'Rot in hell, scumbag'."
I really appreciate the point you made about the alternates.. “They deserve closure too” It never occurred to me to think about how they are subjected to this and need to see that justice was done.
He asked if he could have his ankle shackles removed because he was in a suit, as if he was just going to walk out of court after the verdicts were read. The judge ignored him.
1 hour is all it took for them to go through 76 charges, they didnt even spend a minute on each charge. it was open and shut from the start, that one dude even screamed go to hell after the first murder 1st guilty. props to that guy for saying what we all wanted to say ourselves.
I’m actually glad he told them to do what’s in their hearts and do the right thing (several times) and they returned 76 guilty verdicts. So he knows that’s what was in their hearts and the right thing. There is no mistake about their message. He will try to blame it on that Reddit post because he’s never taken responsibility for anything in his life, but he’ll have the rest of his life to think about it.
Can you believe how quiet and calm he was as soon as judgement rained down upon him? It was so bizarre to see reality hit him finally. Oh Emily. I appreciate you being vulnerable with the audience and acknowledging the pain for the victims. That is something Brooks almost took away in all of his antics, but I really want it to turn back around to the loved ones. 💜💜💜
I agree.... It haunts you the rest of your life. You might seem to the outside world, that you're healing and moving on, but it's an everyday battle within. 😔
It’s possible to make it worse though. Imagining that not guilty would further traumatise the victims (and probably contributes to why so may SV crimes go unreported). This whole event is incomprehensible to me.
I saw you nearly break down when pivoting to the issue of sentencing and victims’ family statements. Thank you sharing your legal acumen and reminding us all that there is an unspeakable grief behind this guy’s in-court performance.
Would be interesting to see a juror watch the trial back and see how he acted during the entire trial while they were out of the room since they only got snippets of his terrible attitude.
@@averyshenan958 We aren't under communistic rule! He had a right to speak & offer his defense! He didn't however have the right to lie, delay & stop the Judicial process!
@@patricialear3532 let's hope she and her daughter find the strength and healing to stay away from him. Not accept calls. He's the type that would push buttons from behind bars
Thank you to the jurors for enduring all the delays and coming to a just verdict. This is one case that I have never felt even a little doubt that he was 💯 guilty as charged.
Hi Emily I’m not a lawyer. IMO This Judge had the patience of an Angel. I have a feeling this trial will end up being used as a training tool. He got what he deserves. He never really apologize to the families with meaning. It was all about him. Again this is my opinion. Have a great day ❤️
Yes she had the patience.... at times , I felt like she had way too much patience and let him get away with talking over her, interrupting her, and trying to intimidate her. It was super frustrating to watch.
@@CarrieLaffs Honestly it's better for all of this bad behavior of his to be on the record than for her to come across as hostile or prejudiced against him. In case of an appeal.
@@melissamendoza889 yes to an extent, but there's a point where being patient crosses the line to losing control of the court. She let him win way to much and even allowed him to ring the bell on jury nullification. Too many "one last chance" followed by again and again more arguing.
@@melissamendoza889 Yeah I get that to a certain extent. Maybe if his guilt of these absolutely horrible crimes hadn't been as apparent, I would understand that even more. This has been an extremely emotional case. This is a crime that you would think only happens in movies and books. (Which this crime is eerily similar to Stephen King's book, Mr. Mercedes) At first I thought a man judge would have been a better judge for the case bc of the dynamic between this judge and DB. But as the trial continued I realized it was actually brilliant. Can't help but to get frustrated at all of DB's tirades though.
He really wanted them to hear about that jury nullification and it didn't matter a lick. The fact that he ever thought it would makes this that much more satisfying.
This has been so frustrating to watch but I'm so glad the jury made the decision. I hope the families are able to heal and move forward a day at a time 💜
I think the the victims and families found the process frustrating too. But the jury delivered justice and Judge Dorow a masterful job of making sure they won't have to go through through it again. Peace to the whole community. 💙👍
What a infuriating defendant and difficult case. I hope the people of Waukesha can find some peace and healing in these verdicts. He got what he deserved. And for all the frustration it may have caused, I do commend Judge Dorow for handling such a difficult defendant with such patience and fortitude. She did an amazing job protecting the record and ensuring safety from appeals. Her and her court staff did a great job.
Thank you for adding that the verdict does not always bring immediate relief. These families have a long journey ahead. I hope they continue to receive support, especially the survivors and people who had to endure his cross 🥺❤️
One of the things they will deal with is that his motivation is still unknown. As humans we want to know why. It's part of our process to move on and change things in order to prevent it from happening again. The city might look at how they do barricades for events in the future for example. Even, "he was drugged out of his mind and thought he was in a video game, saw zombies, was trying to suicide by cop" are more satisfying for closure than the not knowing. Of course, him behind bars is more of a relief than him walking on a technicality or being in a situation to allow him to skip again. The ripple effect of varying PTSD will effect this community for a long time.
@@lilak3010 Emily said during the video that it depends on the jurisdiction and also the court room. Sometimes it's the jury foreperson, sometimes the court clerk and sometimes the judge. It just depends on how the judge wants to run their courtroom.
It's hard to watch this and not cry. It's some sort of justice, the best we have available. But it never should have been necessary and is a small consolation for the lives lost that can never be replaced.
The ripple effects in communities hit by these types of circumstances go on for years. A collective PTSD that comes out in a myriad of ways and triggers. Not just for the those directly injured (who deserve all the love, prayers and support for life). Their families, the people who were there but not physically harmed, the people who now second guess things as the set up for events in the future or have to sign off on parade permits and weigh- is this enough barricades/police and first aid? These things hit the community in so many far reaching ways. I think still not knowing his motivation is a weird way that he still holds control, will still be a Boogeyman in many lives.
@@theConquerersMama I don’t think he wants to say out loud that he was in a rage and just felt like killing a bunch of people would make him feel better.
The way the prosecution presented the evidence was amazing! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 The DA's closing had me so emotional! I saw the full video and it was horrible how, like she said, hit people and "kept going." He definitely needs help, but he's not so foregone that he is not aware of what he was doing... That's why he tried to use so many stall tactics.
All Brooks had to do is pull over his suv , stop , get out and run. And 66 peoples lives and all their families and friends lives would have never been effected. All he had to do was drive in another direction. Darrell Brooks CHOSE to do this. And that is the most monstrous thing about this. This was all completely intentional. 37:30 us too , Emily , us too.
I think he knew it was over yesterday when he FINALLY looked at the jury during his closing. He started with a defiant look then it changed (softened if you will) when he realized he was not intimidating them. I got the feeling the jury was looking back at him then with a FU look.
I’m in Madison WI - and I so appreciate you jumping in on this case. I work in the Court system here - such a hard case. I’ve become a fan of yours through this case!
No sympathy whatsoever for DB. The horror of what he did will be with the families, friends, and those injured is immeasurable. No sentence is too much. I feel so awful for those who were affected, and I'm also so grateful for your knowledge and input, Emily. And thanks also to the moderators for doing a great job.
Now convicted, maybe he is behaving well because he thinks will help appeal and may help Judge give him a lesser sentence, or maybe he is just in shock cos he really thought he somehow convinced jury? I am just so so so glad that he was not able to manipulate the jury. That they stuck to the evidence. And I am just so glad he was convicted.
I've been able to watch this in small increments. His behavior has made my heart break even more for victims and their families and friends. The prosecution and judge have shown much more restraint than I ever could. Emily thank you for streaming this difficult trial. Thank you for providing a place for us to watch as a community and to share our thoughts/feelings.
I watched this trial from the beginning and hardly any of the law tube lawyers were watching. Glad you and Peter joined us. I'm also following Danny Masterson's case.
Me too! I'm hoping that the Danny Masterson case brings down Scientology. They committed crimes by trying to cover this up for him and if The Church of Scientology is found guilty of a felony then they will almost definitely lose their tax exempt static.
That guy that shouted at him must have a connection to count 2. If I lost someone due to him I would have done the same. He showed no respect to the court for weeks. One guy says the truth and gets ejected
Yeah, and that guy probably did have a connection to count 2 and lost a loved one and gets immediately ejected yet DB can go on and on and on and get chance after chance but, one guy stands up for victim and gets immediately shut down. That just doesn't seem fair either.
@@orsikocs he said burn in hell you piece of sh..t And if he were allowed to stay longer I’m sure he would have had a lot more to say. Imagine when the victims and family members get to speak in court soon. I’m sure they will be respectful in the court, but some of them must to just want to scream at that animal
He was allowed to come back in soon. I wondered if it was count 2 also, Lee’s son, who was sooo spitting🎉 🎉angry during his statement that I thought he was wanted to jump over the podium and choke him. He should have been allowed that one outburst.
After this all is said and done i find myself coming to watch again and again. I feel like at the minimum the least i can do threw all of this is watch again and again. So much pain, so much sadness and such a well done job by the judge.. Emily i am a single father of a eleven year old autistic son and, when things get to be too much, and im at the edge of what i can mentally and physically handle. im glad that RU-vid threw watching uncivil you were recommended. This case has been a case I followed every day threw multiple outlets during the day and then at night note taking and doing searches as I'm a logger and woodworker by trade and just am about to enter the realm of separation but that's here no there . This community from just reading threw chats and watching past video shows the amount of respect, and gratitude, that people have for you and ykur opinions. Keep up the great work
Thank you so much for continuing to cover this. It has been so helpful in processing this. For the person asking about how to help locally the Hope Center is Waukesha is a great option. It’s not specific to this tragedy but provides services including a womens shelter.
Thank you Emily. This IS just difficult, being found guilty sometimes doesn’t take the pain away. It’s just tragic. 🥺 I’ve been thinking about doing a commentary on his closing. The Spiritual jargon doesn’t excuse his action or insensitivity to all the people tremendously harmed by his actions. 🙏🏼 Prayers 🙏🏼
The spiritual jargon made me more angry. It felt blasphemous. He acted horribly, lied, manipulated, was disrespectful, all of that in addition to being a murderer and injuring a lot of people, and then sat and read (or pretended to read) the Bible for show and his own benefit. It was disgusting.
He has been unbearable and a horrible person. He was so full of himself trying to be slick and pull all that crap on the court and the judge it is a great day that the jury got it right. He was so snarky yesterday when sitting there before they finally left for the day. I love that these people got justice.
Him glaring at the jury gave me chills...Remember in the beginning of this trial when he had an issue with a potential juror and said " I do not forget faces"
I chocked on my Coffee when your Echo acted up. My Alexa occassionaly just does randome stuff. It's like having the Poltergiest movie in the kitchen with no chairs stacked on the dining table. :-)
Stellar judge and DA, setting less important issues aside to protect the most important issue: the process. Protecting the Waukesha community. Thank you Emily and lawnerds, you are stellar too!
With every day that passed we saw his decent into rage and madness, the judge deserves a medal for her handling of this case. Prayers and justice for the victims , this is a man who must never be allowed to walk the streets again 🙏
I really appreciate the fact that you’re looking for actual commentary and not just mocking the way that this person speaks. I don’t talk like him, but my grandparents did and it’s very hurtful to just hear the constant shaming about how he pronounces things on other channels.😊😊😊
Not co-signing the outburst that happened in the gallery, but I will say I can imagine the despair and anger that drove them to do that. My first thought was “oh that has to be the father of an injured or deceased child” and I couldn’t criticize their behavior. Rules of civility ARE important, I do however hope that the man who yelled at Brooke’s felt vindicated and is now able to find peace with the rulings. 😢
Hello Emily and members of this amazing channel. I'm a new subscriber and can't thank you enough for your expert and through commentary. I like so many others have an interest in true crime, trials, etc. I truly appreciate listening to actual attorneys sharing their knowledge and also interacting with the lay person. I've watched many trials and this one affected me a little differently. So many lives were changed in a matter of minutes. The whole community will never be the same. One person's selfish actions although ruined countless lives; but united a community, the world. There has been other comments from many countries. So many were interested in how our justice system works. This horrific case has been a lesson for all. Love, protect and cherish the times you have with family and friends. Life is a precious gift from Above and should not be taken for granted. Stay safe and well everyone ❤❤❤❤
He had the gaul to call as a dfense witness the mother of 4 kids he mowed down to question her inability to identify him or the car he drove. The prosecutor had to bring home that she is blocking out the memories of that night.
Thank you for making sense of all this. Your voice and reasoned, and humorous comments have helped keep me sane. My heart goes out to the families and victims. I pray that eventually they find peace.
You said it best, this is sad. Sad for the families of lost and injured loved ones and even sad for his family, his mother, his children. It is sad all around.
@@angelsamongus9528 oh no! 😓 Yeah she was probably minimizing it, because she was probably the same way. Such a shame! Well, he can be "angry sometimes" his cell.
Imagine being in jail for life knowing you are safer there than on any street, anywhere. My heart goes out to all the victims, the judge, jury, the prosecution, and especially the families.
The guy who made the comment in the gallery was one of the victim's sons. The way I understand it from the CourtTV commentator it was one of the Dancing Grannies who had flown up on Brooks hood then ran over by him. The judge allowed him back in stating that it wasn't fair to kick him out after allowing Brooks back in so many times
Justice is served. Thank you so much for streaming this EDB !!! This community creates a safe space for us to watch a difficult trial like this. Love the law nerds! Congrats on 670k Emily!!! 💜👏
The mock prayer stance rather than head up, paying attention is so manipulative. It's another way of doing the box fort but with a better PR thumbnail. I believe in prayer however this feels disrespectful. Although, I admit, I don't know how I would comport myself in the reading of 76 charges that sealed my fate for life. The enormity of it might have my head bowed as well.
Thank you for giving us a better understanding of the legal aspects of this case and of the defendant choosing to represent himself. You are it easier to understand from the judge’s standpoint also. I would not have followed this except for you thinking it was important and informative.
I know you don't usually do criminal cases, so thank you very much for helping us through this very difficult one. Maybe once sentencing is done the healing can begin...
internet hugs to those who need/want them, this case was rough. Thank you Emily, this seemed especially hard on you too. Take care of yourself. Hug Fred and George for all of us.
My prayers go out to every family and friend who knew/know the victims. This was a senseless crime that he can not even explain. Thanks Emily for explaining everything so we could understand it. I also think the county owes each of those jurors a really nice meal and a really good bottle of the alcohol of their choice.
Thank you for covering this Emily! I agree the Judge has been so patient. I do believe that it is for appeal purposes so that they can't come back and say that he wasn't given a fair process.
The prosecuting team, and judge must all be so exhausted after this. Hopefully the have some time to rest and decompress after what this man put them through. Hopefully the verdict brings some peace to the victims and their loved ones ❤
