Thanks Keith! It turned out really well. Yes the trim is quite high but I am yet to trip over it (been ok even when drunk!). I was gonna say nobody has tripped yet but my Mum ruined that by tripping on it did today!!! Haha.

Very well done. Thanks for reminding us that there IS a right way to lay those boards (re: the tip on the bigger/thicker side going up on t&g)...the reason, I believe, is so that over years if the floor is sanded or otherwise worn down the t&g integrity will be maintained longer. I really love your work and am using as much recaptured material for my tiny house on wheels (I’m a long time dumpster /skid? diver, which drove my ex crazy...after 30 years he wanted and got a divorce and I must say that my seeing a new use for almost anything, was a significant contributor).

Love this video. It’s diy of a standard most of us can associate with and the end result looks good. My only observation would be that having worked so hard to do this perhaps masking the screw holes with plugs that you could sand down would have finished it better. Thanks

I really like your type of woodworking and I think my woodworking is sort of like yours and I've had my eye on a combo kit with tools most every woodworker has, but it also has a reciprocating saw and I wanted to know if a recip saw is part of your woodworking. Thanks, Keith!!

Looks great guys. Can I ask about the floating floor: so was the whole floor only secured at the doorways? There is no movement or puckering up of the timber? I thought there might be a bouncy looseness if it wasn’t secured. I am putting a floor in soon as well and was wondering if it should be secured to the subfloor or if there is a likeness of movement and pressure by the timber if I do that

A cheap way of improving the finish if you have a pillar drill, is to buy a plug cutter. Counter bore for the screw heads. Tap in the plugs and trim off flush. No screws visible.

nice work Keith. I remember your mate as the electrician on your workshop. Q1 Does the varnish make it watertight (always the issue with wood in kitchens/bathrooms)? Q2 Are there suppose to be those gaps, if not, what happened?
@RagnBoneBrown
@RagnBoneBrown 7 лет назад
+Alistair Dymock well remembered! The varnish is waterbased and offers pretty good protection but I wouldn't necessarily say it was watertight.... will be ok for the odd spillage but probably not from a washing machine leak! There are slight gaps between the boards where they meet, I think that's just how they are to allow for movement and expansion/contraction as the seasons change

@RagnBoneBrown
@RagnBoneBrown 7 лет назад
+lloyd kelly it needed something at he ends, and I was also a bit worried about how high it was but because it's spruce and not the strongest wood I made sure it was quite thick so that it wouldn't crack and break off. It's basically a small step. Seems to work ok so far though
@JohanRantzau
@JohanRantzau 7 лет назад
Great video you made, but next time you make a wooden floor, remember to keep a distance of ca. 10 mm of space to the wall. This is for compensating the movement and differentiating in the floorboards when humidity changes :)
@johncole9964
@johncole9964 6 лет назад
Just wondering if you thought about removing the tile first and then laying the wood floor over what would have been a same height floor throughout. It would also have left you with a floor that wasn't inches higher than the surrounding floors.

4:55 if you wonder why a thick and thin side: Thick side up, so you can sand it down once or twice before having to replace. Thin side up, you'd sand to the tongue and it all falls apart... That said, something soft like spruce seems a bad idea for a high-traffic area like a kitchen.

Wow, that's a great job being done! Congrats. Can you tell me how that subtitles/cc (closed captures) works? Sometimes I turn it on when watching You Tube videos when the maker is talking too quickly for me. This is the first video of you where I turned it on because you speak very clearly (English English is more common to me than American English, although on You Tube I follow more American than English makers). And in fact, for this video I turned on the CC option for only one word which I misunderstood (and did not make sense in that case) But then I left the CC on and found out, that it is nearly perfect (found only two mistakes), as where at other video makers the CC option sometimes makes a mess of the spoken words and it becomes very hilarious to read. Do you do afterwards some fine tuning on the CC? (if that is possible). Or is your voice indeed so clear that the program does everything right? In any case massive Thumbs Up for the project, the video and the CC. Thanks for sharing.

I just wonder why one would choose spruce for flooring, probably one of the softest woods around.Even pine would be harder. If this was meant to be cheap and temporary it will do the job. Thanks for the video. Although I might disagree, I still liked watching it.

+The Bez I think he wanted it to look rustic and look similar to the existing floorboards in his living room (which are pitch pine but with the same stain applied) so a bit of wear and tear won't necessarily be a bad thing

How is it holding up so far? Due to the cost(woods are gold here, less than 1% of people on my island can afford real wood floor), I have limited choices, Douglas fir (1 1/2") cost five times the price here compare to spruce ( 3/8" ). and I'm choosing between them...any advice?

@BischBaschBosch
@BischBaschBosch 6 лет назад
Those with big enough houses have a laundry room in the UK. For the vast majority though, houses, flats and such are far too small for a separate laundry room. The only two rooms with plumbing will be the kitchen and the bathroom. So washing machines in the kitchen are the norm.

@justinjenkins9197
@justinjenkins9197 5 лет назад
I don't understand why you didn't use the available table saw for many of the cuts you made. Additionally, if you would have undercut the door framing you could slide the hardwood under. with tongue and grove, these floors aren't meant to be "floating" and should have been secured in place with at minimum 18 gauge nails, but properly with cleat nails. Haphazard jobs will never stay looking nice. I think the aforementioned, in the comments, gaps will grow over time and the floors minimum preparation will likely result in squeaking and problems down the road. A friction fit for any appliance with a component of water is not the best of ideas. Though, the face-screws in this application actually could be considered charming.

move apart to where? Where will they move to? Their is no gap for them to move into.
@mechminded2207
@mechminded2207 6 лет назад
The risk is the sum of the gaps will approximate the tongue depth, so if there is movement perpendicular to the board run (most likely to occur coming in and leaving through the back door), your footfall will shift the boards, pushing them tighter together and opening up a gap from which a single board can spring.
