The level of perfection, from the accent, the dancing, the facial expression. She is such a perfectionist, I think she probably gets the accent so perfectly because she is from the Bronx. Only a New Yorker can do the Jewish NYC accent so well.
They wanted to see if a nepotism baby would pull in the crowd. Glad Lea replaced her! And i agree, a Tony should have been hers... maybe they will do another run next year.
@@MrTReinold do you know even the girl who first complained about Lea said she wouldn't call Lea racist nether would Amber? Did you know the one so called racist part was one questionable statement 8 years ago? Did you know Lea tried to apologize to the woman too but she choose not to talk to her. Did you know the woman says she wanted to shine a light on privilege in Hollywood which is a real issue but then would not call out the producers of directors of glee? Did You know Lea said she was sorry that her behavior hurt people and no one has said a negative thing post 2020 about her behavior? Her past behavior was wrong no doubt but to label someone racist for one questionable comment and not allow them to grow is wrong too.
Loving every minute…so much talent. I think Lea is a perfect fit for this and does an outstanding job. Hope this breathes new life into the show and it has a long run.
As of last week, today is 10/18/22 "Funny Girl" was at 100% capacity. Only 4 other shows did that last week, one of which was some old show nobody ever heard of called "Hamilton." 😉It has not hit 100% capacity since opening last May, the best it did was an opening week at 95%. It had some respectable grosses, especially the first few weeks, which may have been advance sales before the reviews came out. Mid-July it dipped to a low of 65% and during Beanie's last week ending July 31st, it was at 71%. So Lea's presence along with positive reviews seems to mean the show is finally a hit.
Say what you will, about Lea Michele; but her talent speaks for itself and is undeniable. It's obvious from these videos, that she was born to play this part and that they should have given it to her, in the first place. She completely disappears, into this role. It's not Lea, we see up on that stage; it's Fanny!
Lea is a star and those who hate can be unprofessional all they want, but in this monument Lea Michele is a star reborn, may God’s blessing’s be upon her family, cast, audience and friends amen.
The way I look at is that there are MANY people who are considered "NICE" in the industry that LOVE her and frankly if Lea had left Glee when Corey died a whole LOT of people would have LOST their jobs Ryan Murphy said as much and I'm still PISSED ate him for not standing up for her! I'm not saying that she wasn't a pain in the ass sometimes, but a RASCIST???? Lea Michele SAVED Fanny Girl and all of the other supporting industries (hotels, food, transportation, etc.) are MAKING $$$ instead of LOSING it because of HER!!
Love this performance which was probably Feldstein's weakest moment.....of so many. But I do wish that someone would realize the full potential of this song. The lyric "percolate" is so hot when it is growled and "wah wah mute" sounds so great when a singer actually simulates that sound.
I agree. On the case recording she does the growl on the mute part but it’s barely noticeable. Idina did a terrible job at it and I was surprised because you’d think she’d have hit it out of the park.
I remember "Cornet Man" from the original cast album and it's one of my favorite tunes from the show that was unfortunately cut from the movie. I do remember that on the recording, there were additional lyrics at the beginning where Fanny opines about the life of a wife of a Cornet Man before the point this performance begins. Still, it's a great song and a great performance by Lea Michelle. I have seen a few partial clips of Streisand performing it onstage and feel Michelle's performance is equally as good.
I remember the OBC record too. I wore it out! I just put the kids to sleep and swept the shack. Took my sweet man’s satchel down and watched him pack I said, “Darling, while the stove still smolders Unpin your woman’s hair and rub her shoulders.” I threw myself across the doorway begging “Stay, sweet man, stay.” But there’s more in my man’s life than this old hag! It’s Jelly Roll Morton. And the shiny cornet. And jazzaba rag.
Equally as good? That is so ludicrously indefensible. Barbra Streisand was a revelation the likes of which has never been seen since. Lea is competent, but has absolutely zero originality or artistry. Maybe you should revisit that original and remind yourself of just how extraordinary Streisand is 👀
@@theblueangel28 You're right about Barbra, Blue Angel; but Lea is very talented and I wish her well. I'm one of the fortunate ones who saw Streisand in the original, on Broadway. She was, and is, simply a phenomenon--and as you say, a revelation.
@@theblueangel28 I don’t know that I agree with you that Lea has no artistry or originality. I happen to like her and feel that she’s uniquely talented in her own right. But I do agree that it’s ludicrous to say that her performance of this song is on par. I recently re-listened to the OBC recording of this song, and Barbra’s performance is jaw-dropping, thrilling and stunning. As much as I appreciate Lea, her performance is college open mic level in comparison to Barbra’s. (I imagine Beanie Feldstein’s was probably on par with a high school recital in comparison, based on other recordings of her that I’ve heard.)
I watched this show tonight I mean I heard that people like to say someone's live is like he or she ate CD.. I would say Lea is ruining all CDs.. her live performance at funny girl is way beyond CD quality man literally first feels like she is lip syncing cuz it is just perfect but later u can tell the quality blows CD away.. so many parts her voice is just so smooth like silk man I cannot go back to songs that she covered in Glee cuz she is now on next level.. 😮
This is my absolute favorite song from this musical and when someone sent me the link to Lea Michele singing it I was beside myself with excitement… until I watched it. But in her defense every single production that I’ve ever seen a funny girl this song is always lacking it’s as if no one knows how to make it funny and it’s cute how they copied the “I’d rather be blue”staging and shyness minus the roller skates but IMO she came out of the awkward shyness at the beginning too fast and then was super sharp on the dance moves which is problematic for getting booted from Keanies (oops spelling sorry) I hope I don’t get hate mail for saying this because I’m literally trying to fly from Alaska and save every penny so that I can see this production and I love love love Lea and am beyond thrilled for her FINALLY getting to live her dream.. something almost no one gets to do in their lifetime. But that said I’d have been much more excited to see what they should have come up with for “Cornet Man” not a stolen scene from the movie that goes with a completely different song altogether. If they couldn’t come up with SOMEthing for the actual song in the script maybe they should’ve just done “I’d rather be blue” into “Roller Skate Rag” b/c those are two totally great numbers and fun. I wonder what Barbra did with the song when she played Fanny!! And speaking of the one and only I really really really hope that she goes to see the show because I hear that Lea is just magical!! Again folks please know I’m not trying to knock Lea I was just really hoping for more with that number.
I totally agree with you on the came out of the awkward shyness too fast part. It seems rushed to me too. The comedy is not organic and feels sloppy. And when she started to sing in her “normal” voice, I kinda feel like the audience was relieved too.😅Although Lea sounds too good in this song so I just mainly focus on her voice and how this song just suits her voice.😂
@@user-re2nx9gr8v I’m so glad you posted! I just assumed everyone would tear me apart for my opinion here. It feels totally stolen from the movies acting/staging/direction on “I’d Rather Be Blue” and it needed something fresh and totally different. This song and scene from the stage production is a test IMO of the directors vision because with everyone other song you already know exactly what’s what but with this one there’s no sketch to copy, no movie.. personally I’d LOVE to hear Streisand’s take on it being that she’s a natural comedienne.
@@veronicacpage922 please don’t hate me, but I don’t think that was her choice to do this seeing that way. I think she was just doing this she was told.
Totally agree she comes out of the awkward phase too soon but I loved the last half of the performance so much that you kinda forget about the start by the end.
The cast recording- and live performance of this- is just vocally and stylistically gorgeousss and surprisingly I like it more than her recording of the main numbers (Don't Rain on my Parade, People, Greatest Star). So glad I got to see it live!
This song has personality and is fun to sing. I think it deserves it's place. It's less complex than Greatest Star. Less "done" than "Don't rain on my Parade" and "People".
It was cut back in 1964 after the album was recorded - it's no longer in the printed score. It's a loss... when I presented the number a few years ago with my favorite singer, I put it back.
The Girl can perform! One note...too fast from hesitant..to full blown production number. When Streisand did I'd rather be Blue in the movie...the confidence was gradual. I say, for this number...leave out the awkward steps...and just leave in "Smile"...then go into the number.
