Welcome the the second part of the Ogroid Myrmidon miniature painting masterclass. In this part we are looking at a few basic principles of miniature painting, like adapting the color opaqueness and consistency to a situation, how to define shapes and volumes, how to get a lot of color variety with only a few colors and how to apply texture. All of it packed into the exercise of painting the skintones of our myrmidon. This series is free, but please consider supporting my work on Patreon or through any of the options listed below the timestamps, like buying one of my painting-guides in my webstore or using my affiliate links to buy things like brushes, that you need to buy anyway. Or follow my social media, which also helps a lot! Thanks!

This might be my favorite video from you. The darker magenta up through orange to yellow on the skin is a brilliant idea and gives a great furry skin result. Very cool. And as others have said, your explanations of technique and style, all the way down to specifics of brush strokes is illuminating. I watch a lot of painting videos and this one has been more instructive than the vast majority of ones I have adsorbed. Thank you very much, it was well worth the wait from the first to the second of this series. Cheers, stay safe and healthy.

This video was an absolute eye-opener! Beginner-me would say, "If the mini is smooth here, then my highlights must also be smooth!" But everything you're saying about texture is absolutely the key; rarely is something made by nature perfectly smooth, and painting the appearance of texture adds so much more depth and realism that just an understanding of light and color theory will not accomplish. I wish I could hug you for all of these videos because they help so, so much. Again, thank you!

Palette shown and as mentioned everything's shown and explained nicely liked with colours and why you're applying this there and brushstrokes and your thought process. I started my own Ogroid (from the Silver Tower set) Ill use this as a guide however the ST Ogggy has a staff with flames and that opens a whole new can of worms for me, OSL, there is no avoiding it if I want to mini to read correctly. Also the pose is weird on my Oggy, with lots of the mini in shade, I think this was obviously the sculptors intention so the shaded areas are lit by the flames from the staff. I think Id be better explaining this over on Discord where I can post a picture and perhaps get some help from your Patrions.

awesome! happy to hear that pro painter like you also tends to go back and forth with details :P the only problem for me is that my wet pallete is to small so if i work with too many colors at some point I have to throw away parchment paper I had in order to add new colors to the pallete :( but so far I havnt had a problem recreating simillar paint mixtures so I guess its not a big issue. Also happy to see that your pallete has paints spread all over it, after I made myself first wet pallete I was anxious a bit because people on tutorials had paints really organized in one place and I tend to spread them with the brush all over the place :P I have one question about it though - is it ok to rehydrate a litle dry paints on wet pallete which are spread into thin layer over the pallete and if so is it better to use water or some sort of glaze medium /thinner?
@trovarion
@trovarion 4 года назад
I would say everyone goes back and forth with details ;) noone is that perfect to have it figured out in one go :) I agree, the bigger the palette, the better. I have very confined space when I film because of the palette setup - if I zoom out more I feeel like the mixing and the idea for what the color ends up as gets lost, so i need to be close up on a smaller space, so I get what you mean. When I paint off ccam I use a large palette. If you want to reactivate paints on the palette I would almost say use a medium, because if it's only water the properties of the paint change, since most of the medium the color has naturally is already gone.
@spindleweed

When you are thinning for a wash or a glaze, are you just adding water? My glazes always seem too creamy, or if they are thin enough have no pigment.

I'm building a Beasts of Chaos starter box right now, and am fairly set on building their color scheme around dark, ruddy brown skin (Based in either Mournfang Brown or Doombull Brown), Black, "iron"-like armor, and faded, lighter colored horns. The issue I'm having is: what color should I make their cloth parts, how do I make their fur parts stand out from the black armor, and most importantly (being Beastmen), how do I go about shading their skin when the intended effect is a dark, ruddy brown? Should I be basing them in black instead?
@trovarion
@trovarion 4 года назад
Why would you not prime them black? What color do you want to paint the clothing?
@NorthBorn1985
@NorthBorn1985 4 года назад
@@trovarion I started priming all of my AOS minis in Leather Brown from Army Painter a while back, and always got good results with it as a sort of "mid-tone" starting point that provides an earthy look. Truly not sure if it's best to be that consistent, but here I am. The Beasts of Chaos army I'm doing was originally inspired by the Uruk-hai from the LOTR films, with their red-brown (amber?) skin, black armor, and white warpaint. I'm just not sure what color to go for with the clothing parts, that would compliment that scheme the best. And I'm unsure of how to build up their skin tone. Both Mournfang and Doombull give me a good color, with Mournfang looking a bit more "amber-like", while Doombull looks more "Native American red" to me, and seems closer in look to the Uruk-hai. I could do a base coat of Rhinox hide, and build up to either Mournfang or Doombull, but they are all technically base paints. For the brightest highlights, I'm thinking Skrag Brown. As for their fur, I want to go black, but am unsure of how to make it stand out from the black armor, aside from the dry brushing of Necon Compound I intend to do on the armor to weather it. Up until now, I've simply been giving any black, furry parts on models a drybrush of Skavenblight Dinge... until I realized it's barely visible at arm's length.

Do you always paint with magnifiers on? Or only when doing finer details? I'm 61 and middle-aged eyesight has made painting much more frustrating compare to 15 years ago when I left the hobby.So I find the use of magnifying glasses of some sort very interesting/required. Could you go into some detail on that subject in a video at some point?

Doesn't need a video ;) (actually I have a video where I mention it "10 things that improved my painting") But yeah: I use them whenever possible (cant always use them when recording, but would if I could) - it makes my results so much better and keeps my eyes relaxed and reduces strain.
