Such a great video - Your 'feeling' can sometimes betray you in golf. I feel like i'm doing it right but the inconstancy in my shots prove i'm not. stripping my swing back like this shows my hands were steering the club into casting down and opening the face. The technique of lagging the club via the movement of the body is something i'm going to practice next, and I might invest in one of those 'Hanger' things. Thanks Chris!

Another good vid - tx CR. Lag and shaft lean are the most difficult thing for us amateurs to do on a consistent basis. i used to use a training club called the Striker - I dare say you have heard of it but I learned you can make your own by grinding the sole of an old 7 or 8 iron - it takes patience but it does the trick. I also learned the "hangar" trick with a coat hangar and was wondering if you might do (or have already done...?) a vid on homemade training aids - swing weights, impact bags and so on - ??

@williamreichert4798
@williamreichert4798 Год назад
when you do that drill, if you look carefully ,you can see that the thing that powers this little swing is the movement of the weight to the right early in the little backswing and the weight back to the left provides the force to change the direction the swing toward the target. When you do it wrong. ( cast from the top) we see that the weight ( pressure) does not move toward the target on the mini downswing. The power ( force ) is coming from the legs,hips, core.

Hey David, yes the lower body certainly plays a role as it initiates the forward movement which helps to sequence everything correctly. Generally speaking it’s hard for things to work well if the parts below don’t move quite right 👍

@WyattScott

It all starts with proper grip. The trailing hand is especially vital to get correct. One must grip the club in the 2nd pads of the trailing hand, not the first as i’ve been doing for the past 22 years and just figured out I was ruining myself all these years because if that small move but huge impact on swing quality. By using the fingers/2nd pad it allows for all the good thing to follow, lag, using the body not the arms and hands, squaring the club, creating massive power etc etc. If you fuck yourself in your grip you’ll never have a great swing period. Human nature wants to use the 1st pads against the palm of the trailing hand as it feels powerful, but it’s absolutely a swing killer. Try 2nd pads and a full bucket like I did last week finally after 22 years of questions with no answers. Hit the best shots of my life from wedge to driver, by far and it felt so easy. Try it!!!

I've been trying to stop casting for years and can't seem to do it. I can attest your last point that doing this with an open clubface will lead to 45 degree right/shanks. It seems this also needs to be paired with getting the left hip out of the way on the downswing, no? If the hips don't clear = more shanks.

Great vid Chris. A question I’ve always had in this regard is, does this give us license to ‘let go’ of the club slightly at transition to allow this to happen? I.e. keep control in the fingers but maybe allow the grip to drift away from the heel of the hand slightly. I’ve often heard it referred to as ‘ re-gripping’ and being a big no-no.
@ChrisRyanGolf
@ChrisRyanGolf 2 года назад
Hey Tim, great question and it’s a fine line. I don’t like to see the hand peel away from the club, but I do like the golfer to feel a little like they are reducing tension through the wrist area to allow this move to happen
@timdorrington392
@timdorrington392 2 года назад
@@ChrisRyanGolf Thanks Chris, I find that the strength of the grip in the fingers is difficult to separate from the level of tension in the wrist though. I get your drift though, just a case of getting the balance right I guess.

Don't get me wrong, the instruction provided here is of course faultless but can we get a drill to use without the props please? Cheers.

@ChrisRyanGolf Год назад
Hey Phil, I of course appreciate your response, it if all you do is play then the reality is that you may never improve. These videos are for those looking to improve, and for that there needs to be practice. There are some quick fix options which may apply, but they often have short term effects and don’t work over the long ru n. I definitely do try to offer tips which require less time/effort/practice, but all changes need some practice time
@007SpencerForHire
@007SpencerForHire Год назад
@@ChrisRyanGolf I take your point. "Practice makes perfect", right? My point is that most of us just don't have the time or inclination to become perfect or anywhere close to it. We watch videos such as yours, we watch the pro tournaments on TV or travel to a course to see them live if we're lucky enough. We then try to emulate what we've seen. We also have lessons which hopefully does help us to lower our handicaps. And I understand you need to sell stuff to make your living. Fair enough. With the help of tips such as yours and other instructors here on YT I have won or placed 2nd in my last four consecutive tournaments. Admittedly the last 2 were reduced to 9 holes due to rain damage to our local course. However, my game is improving (at 60 years of age) I'm playing better than I ever have (no props or gadgets) and most importantly (for me) I am enjoying it! Cheers from NZ.

Hey Chris, there are two schools of thought on ball placement. One is based on the opinions of Ben Hogan and Jack Nicklaus of always placing the ball at the inside lead heel no matter what club you use. The other is based on modern day golfers and vary based on the club. I believe both are correct myself and just wondered your thoughts on it. I see you vary yours, but wondered if you thought it really matters to you if a golfer does one or the other.
