"For Your Life" is one of those hidden gems that is only known (and loved) by Zeppelin fans but certainly deserves a much, much larger audience. Such a beast of a song. Great riff after great riff.
You had me smiling the whole way through. I've watched everyone if your Zep reactions and knew you were going to dig this, especially For Your Life, which has grown on me big time with that tricky off kilter riff that only Zeppelin can do masterfully!
The album was done after Robert's car accident. They all felt under the gun and stressed by the unknown of Robert's health and would they continue as a band. The music is purposefully stripped down; no elegant, glorious musical arrangements that create dreams. Instead, the album is stark, relentless and in your face. In one interview, Robert said something (paraphrasing) that this album was a scream for survival. In a different interview, Jimmy said (paraphrasing) that the album was two fingers up in the face of the forces that tried to tear them apart. Achilles is a furious juggernaut. For Your Life is supposedly about a friend of Robert's who OD'ed and his growing dissatisfaction with the drug scene in Los Angeles in general (at one point he says "Don't you want it - cocaine, cocaine, cocaine?", in another part you can hear him snort loudly and mentions "On the balance of a crystal, paying through your nose".) They played this live for the first time at the O2. Royal Orleans was Robert tweaking Jonesy's nose, which you'll understand if you read the lyrics. The band used to love going to New Orleans because they could go to all the gay bars and not get hassled as they would if they went elsewhere. Jonesy tells a story of how one time in New Orleans, he and a drag queen went back to the Royal Orleans hotel to continue the party and fell asleep while their still lit joints set the room on fire. He woke up to firemen carrying him out of the room while putting the fire out.
Really enjoying your reaction to Presence, the smile on your face is priceless throughout. On Achilles last stand JPJ was playing a Hagstrom 8 string bass, that's what gives the track that sort of galloping feel. Looking forward to part 2 ✌️
My opinion but they didn’t make a bad album!! They had different styles and did allot of exploring in different types of music!! I think they r total Fire Rory!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I agree!! Not one bad album and why people feel the need to trash them in replies is asinine. If they don't like them, why are they even listening? Some people just think their "feelings" matter. When it comes to Zeppelin, they can keep their feelings to themselves!! Sorry, just had to say it :)
Love your reactions brother. I'm 55 years old and Growing up in the 70's I had 3 posters on my wall.. Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Rush. I listened to every Album, every word under headphones up in my room.. deciphering every lyric searching for meaningful substance and I found it everytime. These are the songs from the soundtrack of my life and I just live watching you react because it reminds me of my 10 year old self. Reminds me of how utterly floored I was by all the great music and concerts I went to Growing up.. sometimes I feel a little spoiled by all the really good bands that I got to see.
make sure you watch the 02 arena version of 'for your life ' when they are in their 60's with Jason Bohnam on drums, and the 'Achillies last stand' from Knebworth 1979
"For Your Life" kicks ass. Never played live until the O2 gig in 2007. Check it out. Great reaction. Also check out "Achilles Last Stand" at Knebworth 1979. You'll see the the synergy between Page and Bonham on full display.
yup! And, man, don't Bonzo look like Joy Itself as he's playing Achilles, and, really, most of the songs from that show. I get the feeling that he's sort of, in a humble way, like: "Hell Yeah! I'm in a band that's worthy of my skills--and then some: Let's GO!"
I happen to love this album!! I was so sick of all my friends listening to Zep IV and I began listening to this, Physical Graffiti and Houses of the Holy more. IMO Zeppelin doesn't have a bad album. I just remember whenever a Zeppelin album dropped, you waited in line to get one. Also like to mention that their live album "The Song Remains the Same" was also a movie and it rocks!! I still have all my original albums all of which were played to the max but kept in excellent condition. Great memories flipping through not only my albums but now my old CDs as well. Would love to find an avid music lover who would appreciate such a collection.
Hi , I've still got all the original Zeppelin albums, Including TSRTS.I saw the movie when it came out in Australia with a girlfriend who hadn't heard of Zeppelin 😢 After watching the movie we had a new convert😁
Because of Robert's accident they didn't tour for this album. They only performed two tracks live from the album and it got very little radio play, on Detroit radio stations anyway. Personally I wore out a couple of tapes of this.
I was waiting for you with this album eager to find out your reaction😊let me check😉can you please react to Trampled Under Foot live? It's on top of my beloved Zeppelin songs
