Jonesy plays the electric clavinet on Custard Pie and Jimmy put his guitar playing through an ARP synthesizer while Robert played the harmonica. The Rover is about Robert's noticing how things have changed a bit since fame has come along as he asks "How all this squander of earthly plunder will leave us anything to show" and he seems a little nostalgic for a less hectic time "If we could just join hands". In My Time of Dying was very popular in concert, however, Robert refused to sing it after his car accident. The thunderous blues of this song takes your breath away. Don't feel bad about trying to pick or rank their albums. I always say their music is about mood and their diversity ensures you will find the best Zep song to fit whatever mood/situation you need.
During Custard Pie, I believe the sound you were trying to define might have been Jones on the clavinet, and Plant did play the harmonica during this song. Albums 1 and 2 remain my favorite for sentimental reasons, but the others are so good it's really difficult for me to pick a favorite out of them. Enjoying your reaction to Zep, as usual. Thanks!
It is my beloved album❤️I love all the songs - really! I listen every day after coming back from work. I love Plant's raw voice...and the rest? Genius pure genius! Love your reaction as usual. Keep on going with the Zeps👍👍👍they never disappoint
This is my favorite Zeppelin album, even though my favorite Zeppelin song is not on it. On this album though are multiple badass songs. The Rover being one of them. I am confident by the time you're though the whole album you'll be on the same page.
Their crowning achievement. In 1981, when I was 12, I took my brother's cassette with me on a Scout trip to Norway. It didn't 'alf impress the teenage Norwegian girls. It's all I played while I was there. I love it now as much as I ever did. It has a crispness and freshness and eclecticism, the impact of which has never lessened for me. And I still have the cassette - along with several other vinyl and cd versions, naturally.
How "The Rover" never got more radio play is beyond me. That RIFF! Grooviness Itself. I used to come home from the bars in college in my freshman year and (this was 1984) light up a cig in my dorm room and put my headphones on, and (I think it was vinyl!) blast this album side into my buzz-happy brain! So rude, as my dormmate was usually asleep, and I'm sure the sound bled thru the headphones, and the smoke! OMG, how thoughtless, lol! But...Zeppelin!
