LEDs and Lasers in Liquid Nitrogen!!

Here my labmates and I change the color of LEDs and lasers by freezing them with liquid nitrogen!!
This experiment works by utilizing liquid nitrogen to cool the semiconductor to -196ºC, robbing it of much of its thermal energy. This causes the "bandgap" energy to increase, thereby increasing the emitted photon energy and decreasing the emission wavelength.
Oodles of liquid nitrogen definitely is a perk of working in a NMR lab. :D
Regarding laser safety...This laser was run at just above its threshold current, putting it at 5mW of output power according to my own measurements on an OPHIR laser power meter. At 5mW, this laser is classified as FDA "eye safe" meaning that the blink reflex will prevent any damage from this laser, even from a direct hit. I ALWAYS wear laser goggles when working with lasers over 5mW!!

You should try to bring a IR diode into the visible spectrum!
@theLuigiFan0007Productions
@theLuigiFan0007Productions 9 лет назад
SeanHodgins That would be a cool idea (pun intended). Actually, how about an experiment to see how far it can shift before it fails to control a TV? Like give a remote an external diode, you could also see the pulse patterns then if it went red. Some cheap IR diodes already emit a small amount of nearly visible light, which some people can see. I can see it.

if everything blue shifts, what if you put a violet light in there? does it go out of the visible light spectrum?

You guys (Styropyro and crew) ignore all these comments on your appearance and personality. What you guys do looks awesome and clearly your all hella smart. I ran a table top roleplaying game where we all played highly intelligent superheros who built there own powers (for the most part). You guys remind me a lot of that game. My point is me and my friends fantasized about being as cool as you and your friends. I honestly thought being so young and in such a high-end lab was pure fiction. It was part of the premise that we were each young geniuses and a lot of the social interactions kept that as a theme. Do more videos with your friends, its cool seeing all of you and your lab. I don't think we'd have a ton to do together but I wish I knew you guys, you seem like a great bunch.

Does this mean if you ran light through liquid nitrogen it would change color, or is this effect only due to the hardware getting colder and producing a different wavelength at the source?

Will the actual beam from a 15mW laser hurt your eyes? Like if you are pointing it away from you and you can see the beam. Will that hurt your eyes?

Very cool! If you do this with a UV or Blue laser would you have to worry about it shifting into the XRay spectrum?
@coopergates9680
@coopergates9680 8 лет назад
+Andrew Jones Blu ray ones (405 nm) would probably only end up at around 388 nm, longwave UV. Blue ones (447 nm) would not even reach violet.
@JugadorNo8
@JugadorNo8 8 лет назад
Very cool experiment!!! :D But I'm getting something wrong: so light from lasers and LEDs changues color according to temperature or the LED and Laser materials changue temperature and therefore their functioning and ultimately the color of light?
@coopergates9680
@coopergates9680 8 лет назад
+JugadorNo8 Both lasers and LEDs rely on band gaps of semiconductors, the energy difference between the valence and conduction bands of electrons - lowering the temperature raises these gaps, so the light produced has more energy (shorter wavelength).

Does this happen to other semiconductor devices, like solar panels or transistors? For instance, if you sent a solar panel to space and it cooled to -190C, would it change the wavelength properties of its absorption from say infrared to visible?
@EGL24Xx
@EGL24Xx 6 лет назад
Yes. That is a bandgap dependent process and temperature affects the bandgap (colder material, lower atomic spacing, larger bandgap)

+jstanothabludyalbert That's why you use temperature stabilized lasers in DWDM (dense wavelength division multiplexing) fibre optic communications. For example on submarine cables they use this to fit more channels in there.

Return to normal If they were permanent we would have many more colors than the standard 405nm 532nm 650nm you see in the pens However 532nm wouldn't change because it's dpss. Either way it would be fun to have cheap yellow lasers!
