I've been dying to get started on the Airport... and the Fairground and the second Subway and, well, the list goes on. But finally we're here. Today I do a lot of planning concerning the space available from Brick Nottingham Airport and make a start on the building itself with a Jetway and a façade of the wide-body passenger plane from set 7894!

Looks awesome!! I'm just wondering, cause I know how you try to consider things most don't think about. Have you considered the fact that the airplane wings would be basically in the building if the building continued through the wall. Not sure how you'd represent that consideration in the build, but it was something I noticed trying to imagine the whole thing.
@RobinHoodBricks
@RobinHoodBricks 3 года назад
Haha, I hadn't. Thanks for ruining it, haha. Yes the standard wings would be four studs into the building without a longer jetway. Maybe the building goes in at that point. You've made my brain hurt!

No an issue many airports have terminal buildings that would end about where the gangway is. I think your good! How about a female member of the flight crew? Maybe just add a pusher truck to push the plane back! Looks fantastic!!
@richy77
@richy77 3 года назад
Robin Hood Bricks Although you would have to rebuild it, you could turn the plane 90 degrees to solve that problem, I'm not sure how practical that is though. Most airport terminals seem to park their planes nose-first into the building.

At the other end of the airport you could have a budget airline - passengers queuing for a late departure in frustration on the tarmac, luggage being mishandled, distracted womanising pilot.

Very nice concept of cuttingeven the planes and putting them up against the wall. The green plates are a nice transition going to the airport and theme park. It reflects real life change from city to country. For the airport, it’s a strong start to what I know will be a great airport. Maybe there could be a curious kid looking out through the glass to see the airport crew? And the best idea I’ve heard here is using “building of LEGO to buy more LEGO”! Everyone agrees with that

Looking at the actual ternimal mock up, it’s relatively good. Some improvements you can make from an avgeek: Rotate the position of the wheels on the jet bridge, normal airports have the jet bridge retract into the ternimal. There isn’t normally passenger seating in front of the boarding door, unless your boarding from the second door. So I’d move the door further to the front. Make it so the entrance to the plane is wider, as normally the door is seen inside the jet bridge. Also try to make it arch over the door way so people’s heads don’t get wet from rain. Try adding a catering truck on the other side. I know you won’t be able to do all of this (and you probably won’t do any of it), but these are a few tips I have. Great video by the way. :D

Haha, I knew an airport would bring out the technical comments. I have rotated the wheels, that was my mistake. I can't push the plane forward any further due to the limited space so I won't be able to make the jetway end wider or move the door either. I guess it is a LEGO stylised jetway rather than a realistic one. If I was doing a massive airport this would all be possible!

Robin, a suggestion for you: The jetway needs a canopy that overlaps the top of the aircraft and seals up the opening. What if it were raining, would the minifigs enjoy getting soaked as they board or disembark the aircraft? Love the idea of an airplane façade! Another great addition to the city sir! The idea of the airport façade is smart and the execution of the sliced off plane worked out really well! If your fence isn't too intrusive, may I suggest you have a little person waving goodbye to someone walking down the jetway. Or add this scene to the front pavement area. A baggage handling vehicle with maybe a scene of the handlers bungling up the loading would be fun too. If you could have an open suitcase with clothing strewn about.

Brings back memories from The LEGO set Air 2000 used to sell onboard way back in the day. An idea if you wanted a pilot more visible, he could be on the ramp itself with a torch walking around looking up at the nose of the plane on his "walk around". Also maybe some yellow tiles to show the stand line, in line with the landing gear wheel ending in a T shape to mark the stopping point. But I'd avoid numbers, as there on the runway the other side of the guillotine.

Very nice video update, thank you! I actually used the 7894 airport as a base for my own, so nice work there. Regarding the tarmac, I used really old space base plates from blacktron I believe, they have the lines and the markings one would expect on airport tarmac. You could also use 6x6 flat tiles (6014617) to imitate the tarmac, should be pretty realistic, and you can use small yellow or white tiles between them for the markings. The green / old gray street plates are fully ok, I actually used them as runways (when I had space for a runway, it became Ninjago City now ) since typically a runway has grass left and right. Cheers!

I really don’t mind the new road base plates, the change of colour suggests a change of road surface/material which is common in cities. Also love the start of the airport, it looks great.

For a little bit more detail on the Jetway, I thought you could attach a flex tube (Part 6056596) from the bottom of the Jetway too the bottom of the wheels as many Jetway's normally have pipes running from them.

I'd love to have the space for an airport! Look forward to seeing how you do this. Could the walk way do with a "control area" on one side with maybe a ladder up? Good use of the nose piece to show the docked plane. And sure you'll be adding all the ground services for fuelling, etc. Good work sir.

What a great idea, Robin! I've been struggling about how to integrate my airport set (a moc'ed up version from that 1990's "Airline" set) back into my own city after I'd changed my layout. Absolutely no room for runway stuff. Now your idea has given me a great thought on what I could do (since I have a U-shape that goes around 3 walls myself. Yet again, I may "borrow" your ideas after I see how you go about the full airport structure! ;)

Top flight entertainment, Robin! Nice thinking to do a plane façade! Great use of the tight space you have. Can’t wait for ‘part deux’. Maybe there could be some scene with spilt aviation fuel from the Octan tank by the plane, or the ground crew looking at Superman saving your stricken helicopter over @sweat, or something else more comedic with the ground crew? Don’t mind the road change; normal in the UK. Wicked show yet again. Super, smashing, great! 😀

Like the new base plates. The change in shade just hints at newer and older roads. With your speed bumbs maybe add a white tile to show it's location. For the ground crew how about adding one of the helmets with ear covers? Also on a platform fueling up the jet one of the mini figures. Otherwise great video

If the two base plates where the construction site is at the moment are going to be modulars (or equivalently sizes buildings) I would probably do the transition to the "green" road plates after that. I could imagine a gas station and car garage there for example - not necessarily the Corner Garage set but something along those lines. I know you're not a big fan of purely residential buildings so I don't imagine that's your plan there - and people probably wouldn't want to live right next to a noisy airport anyway - not even yellow plastic people. Another thing I could imagine right at the edge of the airport would be an abandoned industrial building (perhaps a place for your dark gray sliding doors that were discolored around the stickers) that some local youths have turned into an indoor skate park. I have done something similar to my old red train service station (10027) before turning it into a rock climbing gym and now part of a modular building with a car garage in it. The huge double doors just look great anywhere. 😅

For the tiling you should have a look at the 6x6 tiles (they come in Dark Bluish Grey) on Lego Bricks n Pieces - I use these for tiling large paved areas such as car parks etc and they look really good, plus works out to be a bit cheaper. I did manage to score 300 in this year’s LUGBulk order, they’re 75% cheaper and was very happy to see them on the list this year!!
