LEGO Ideas International Space Station 21321 review: A respectable display model

LEGO's second ISS set is the first (and possibly last) to depict it in its fully assembled glory. A larger, more enjoyable, more interesting build than I expected, to be sure.

Regarding the solar arrays: you can relax the tension a third way (which I chose.) Pulling the gray out from the top won’t show any gaps.

Interestingly enough, the shuttle from the 31091 shuttle transporter set is nearly perfectly scaled to this ISS model. It's around half a stud too short IIRC, so that's pretty much as close to perfect as can be.

Verrrry impressed & delighted that you were able to fully appreciate how the real life ISS is verrry similar as “real life LEGO’s” because that couldn’t be a more accurate comparison! It very much is similar to Lego’s in the modular sense, being able to slide modules into place, remove & replace modules, all with universal connection. Great bit of info!

Using the extra 1x1 technic beam / tube piece, you can dock the shuttle appropriately to the black truncated cone on Node 2 (actually the SpaceX docking adapter for Dragon/Dragon2) on the "front" (as displayed) part of the station.

I have a feeling that the module with the white top is meant to represent SpaceX's Dragon capsule, it fits on the Canadarm really well. The capsule on the right, I think, is Boeing's Starliner. The 3 crew transport at the moment look like they represent the past, present and future of Human space travel. Really nice touch

Well done! I got this set and LOVE it! I also love how it is in scale with the Lego Saturn V. These are 2 very important parts of space history. I really hope we get an updated Lego Shuttle and booster set that is in proper scale with this ISS and the Saturn V.
@HarryNohara
@HarryNohara 4 года назад
The two extra spacecrafts are actually a SpaceX Dragon Crew (with solar panels) and a Boeing Starliner. Not a Soyuz and not a CRV. A few of the Soyuz modules on the ISS, are actually cargo vessels instead of a crew vessel. Soyuz crew and cargo look exactly the same, in LEGO and in real life. You can dock the Shuttle by removing the cargo door(s) (they would be open to dock in real life) and use one or 2 extra parts to dock from the front. Works great. There is only one Canadarm, Canadarm1 was used as a tool in the Shuttles, not on the ISS. The Shuttles retired and so dit Canadarm1. Personally I like the set, but I agree the Shuttle should have been bigger. The Technic pieces are ugly, but to be honost, they aren't bothering me. What I do miss is education of the modules in the booklet. You have to look up everything on the internet to find out what each module is. They could have added at least 1 or 2 pages with a simple explenation of the modules. Just a line and the name of the module would have been good enough already.

I would recommend getting the creator space shuttle as well as the ISS. I don’t have the ISS, but the creator shuttle is almost exactly as long as one of those solar panels. It’s probably impossible to attach to the ISS, but it would look much better next to it.

Bit late to the party here. Just bought this kit yesterday and put it together. Was very easy to assemble and is a real showpiece. I have so much stuff in my “space cave” that I need to put a shelf up on a wall at eye level for this. Saves any bumps or ‘small hands’ from visiting family. Overall, I think it’s a really fantastic build and showpiece.
@t65bx25
@t65bx25 4 года назад
Canadarm-2 is actually the model designation, the “Original” Canadarm was only used on the Shuttle. Canadarm-2’s primary upgrades were the abilities to use either end as the anchor so it could inchworm anywhere on ISS, a longer primary beam, and a modular “hand” extension called DEXTRE.

Someone may have mentioned, but Scott Manley determined the shuttle from the 3-in-1 set (31091) is about the correct scale, of the sets that LEGO has officially released. Great review! It's fine that you approach the review as a LEGO fan, rather than a space fan. It is your perspective of expertise, if that makes sense.
@thedemogamer6595
@thedemogamer6595 4 года назад
I will be honest I was giddy, especially seeing the shuttle with it, I’m not a space super fan but I do love it! And I grew up with the space shuttle being the only in service thing Canada (where I’m from) getting a ride up to space on, and seeing the shuttle be just small in scale really makes me... sad? Cause they were sooooooo close!!!

I like the blue pins, it’s LEGO after all and it’s built and held together by pieces , and I feel the blue pins that are visible almost showcase the technic innovation that’s being used in the toy models . I don’t think that all the support pieces must be masked over and hiding all the inner workings

The only thing that bugs me about this set is that the shuttle is WAY WAY too small. Remember that the shuttle was big enough to fit most of the modules in it's bay. The one from set 31091 is roughly the right scale. Scott Manley -- one of the larger space-oriented channels on YT -- has a video where he builds the ISS set and then adapted 31091 to work with it.

Given what yo usaid in the beginning, I was a little surprised to see you still putting so much effort into researching this set. The standard you seem to set for yourself seems astronomically (hehe) high, which makes your reviews and most of the other videos you do so amazing, so thank you very much for putting in all that effort. Regarding the space shuttle, the model that lego made for a 3 in 1 creator set (31091) is much closer to the size it's supposed to be, or so I've heard.

I got it in her display case and looks great with my other Lego models of the Saturn V, the Lunar Lander and the Space Shuttle with Hubble. My biggest complain with this set is the drooping of the modules with the solar arrays. The needed to have some ground support (maybe make the 2 support struts v shaped at the end in order to touche the drooping modules, or just splay the struts apart) because this drooping will only get worse with time

On the solar panel array, instead of creating the small gap between the two dark gray technic pieces, why could you keep those together and pull them toward the end of the long technic axles? There's usually a lot of axle inside the female axle housing.
