In this video, photographer and Leica expert David Farkas takes an in-depth look at the new Leica S3 medium format digital camera. He compares the new S3 to the previous-generation Leica S (Typ 007), discusses the unique features of the Leica S System and shows off real-world images from a photo adventure to Patagonia.
The camera packs a brand new dual-gain 64 megapixel sensor into its weather-sealed medium format DSLR body while offering 15 stops of dynamic range, full-sensor 4K video and better high ISO performance.

Hi David, thanks for the review. At 2008 the S system was revolutionary as you described. However, the technology evolves rapidly. Nowadays, even recently released S3 lags behind some of the competitor's "crop" medium format cameras. I hope Leica will shift to a mirrorless medium format design sooner than later. They can create an amazing system leveraging the knowledge and experience gained in the last couple of years through the development of SL camera & APO Summicron lenses.
@RedDotForum
@RedDotForum 4 года назад
As I pointed out in the video, even though the S3 isn't revolutionary like the S2 was back in 2008, it doesn't have to be. The S is still the most rugged, most ergonomic medium format system available. The optical finder and S lenses are incredible. Ultimately, the S3 is evolutionary, with a big bump in resolution, better color, and improved low light performance, but with no compromise in dynamic range. Will the S4 be mirrorless in 4 years time? Maybe. Maybe not. Right now, I'm looking forward to putting the S3 to use for the time being.

I'd just like to point out that Leica's medium format is also a crop MF variant. If you want true digital media format, PhaseOne and Hasselblad's H series are your only options.

I had the 007 for many years and now the S3. The S system is the best built, highest quality camera system in the world. It’s a pure pleasure to use. I’ve used almost every thing else. You get what you pay for in the S. As for mirrorless vs. DSLR they both have their pros and cons. I prefer the DSLR for ease of use, battery life and crispness through the viewfinder. I prefer mirrorless for size, weight and low light viewing. But I don't expect the S to be lightweight or to use it in really low light. I have shot all makes of cameras over my 22 year professional career including Canon, Nikon, Sony, Hasselblad, Mamiya, Fuji and Phase one. Nothing is close to the image quality I get from my S. Even at 37 megapixels my 007 was distinctly better than every full frame camera I have ever shot with. The phase one IQ4 has more resolution at 150mp but is fussy to use and slow. I have literally shot side by side with the Phase one and the S was superior in color rendition, ease of use and sharpness corner to corner. Yes there were a lot more pixels on the Phase one and it's an amazing system but I prefer the S for it's speed, handling, battery life, lenses and did I mention speed? Then there are the lenses. I have been a pro since 1998 when I graduated from Brooks institute of Photography. I have never seen anything like the quality of the 24mm lens on the S. It is almost fiction. The 100 f.2 is like shooting with silk. The 70 is light, fast and the skin tones are unreal. The 120 macro is a marvel. I know I'm gushing a bit but I have tried everything and nothing I've used comes close to these lenses. I'm a pro. I don't need a ton of features to get in the way of my shooting. I shoot large format frequently (5x7). I prefer manual focus so the single point AF means nothing to me. When I need the AF I have the back button AF/AE lock on. It's extremely precise and quick given the lens sizes. The live view is what I use when doing critical focus. If I could request anything from the S it'd be the same rear interface as the M, SL and Cl. The three button simplicity. I was shooting camels one time in the Sahara desert with my S. The wind was whipping up sand and at one point I dropped the camera directly onto the sand and it rolled down a dune. I picked it up and blew out the sand and kept shooting. I've been in rain storms that would make me nervous with any other camera. The battery life is insane. I haver never killed a battery in a single shoot. I only have 2 because they last so long. Hundreds of exposures per charge. I know it's not for everyone. It's expensive and heavy. But if you want the best medium format camera in the world that will take a punch and keep going this is a great option. Like all Leica cameras, the S is extremely well built, solid in the hands, rugged and simply marvelous. I compare the line of Leica cameras to other german engineered and built products like BMW. You know the sound the door makes when you close it in a 7 class BMW? Thats the S. You truly get what you pay for. I get tired of people complaining about the price and the "lack" of features. Most of the detractors haven't even picked up an S, let alone used one professionally. If you haven't driven a BMW how can you even begin to critique it? Don't hate on something you know nothing about. It's embarrassing.

@NickGuttridge
@NickGuttridge 4 года назад
Having tested Fuji’s GFX with an adapter and leaf shutter Hasselblad lenses to shoot at 1/1000th in the studio, well it works. But! The Fuji overheated in the studio when we worked it all day on a dance shoot. Come the afternoon lots of connectivity issues shooting tethered. So for all those people asking for mirrorless tech, the SLR design of the S3 should be better. No overheating I hope. I’m requesting to test the s3 and report back. Disappointed it hasn’t got better card slots. Other medium format cameras have an unlimited buffer when shooting tethered. That’s important. I hope the s3 can do that too. Slightly worried about the robustness of those cables. I doubt the their tools will have a solution.
@RedDotForum
@RedDotForum 4 года назад
You can also use the HCD lenses on the S3 with the S-Adapter-H or use the dedicated Leica CS lenses. I've never had an S camera overheat. Ever. The sensor is mounted to a heat sink which then dissipates heat into the metal body of the camera, allowing for very effective cooling. This is important not just for heavy shooting, but also to maintain high SNR (signal-to-noise), which allows for 15+ stops of dynamic range and very clean high ISO. Thermal management is one of the reasons that Leica opted to stick with a DSLR form factor rather than attempt to go mirrorless for this generation of S camera. Agree on the card slots. I would have preferred dual UHS-II SD slots like on the SL2 as I find CF cards to be largely obsolete at this point. I didn't have a chance to test out tethered shooting, so I can't speak to that. The supplied cable with locking LEMO connector is fairly robust. Good luck in your testing.
@NickGuttridge
@NickGuttridge 4 года назад
@@RedDotForum Thank you for replying. It's useful to know about the HCD lenses. To be clear I was complaining about the Fuji overheating. I think you know that, but readers may be confused. I would agree that it is a selling point that the Leica can avoid overheating and reducing noise. I can't wait to get my hands on the S3 and put it through the paces in the studio. The phaseone camera has such an uncomfortable shutter, I can never tell when I have really found the perfect moment with that one.

I'm an SL user. I like the changes made to the SL2, but I do however much prefer my X1D II for all my landscape shots. The colors and tones are all so more real and dreamy compared to the SL2. I am also wondering, if all Leica changed on the S3 was the sensor, what took SO long for it to arrive??? I am sure it is a beautiful camera that produces extreme top notch images. But, It already FEELS old and outdated! And only 8 minutes for the longest exposure time? I have owned many M series bodies and still own many SL and M lenses, but my journey and the S3 are not in any way going to converge.

As a Hass user with a couple of H6D100's - I recently got asked to review a Leica and was told that it could take my HC lenses - I asked what the point of that was? They said so you can have a more compact camera on location to compliment the H. As it happened I had my X1DII along with me at the time and stuck to the front of it via the adaptor was an 80MM HC lens!!!! - Also Hass guarantees colour matching between H and X cameras and I can confirm it - providing you are using the same CMOS sensor, which I am; it's just slightly bigger on the H giving you near to makes no difference full frame medium format. I love the idea of Leica, but can't quite see how I would fit it into my work. If I was as you are a 'scaper' I might consider having a good look just to see what it is all about but the X series are just so good.......

Great review... Quick question, is there any specific reason why for the asking price, it doesn’t produce 16-Bit files? 🤷🏿‍♂️
@RedDotForum
@RedDotForum 4 года назад
The simple answer is that there is no need for 16-bit files. The S3 and the S007 before it are capable of capturing over 15 stops of dynamic range. The 14-bit DNG files are more than able to store this information.

Hi David - Just on image quality, on a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate the Typ 006, typ 007 and S3? Also, how big is the difference in image quality if you compared the typ 007 MF with the new SL2 FF for landscapes?
@RedDotForum
@RedDotForum 3 года назад
Purely arbitrary but here goes. Let's give the S3 a 10 and go from there. The S007 would fall in at an 8 or 9. It offers absurd image quality with some of the best dynamic range and color reproduction available. The S3 has that, plus a big jump from 37.5 to 64 megapixels. If you don't need the higher MP count, go for a used S007 and don't look back. Now, the S006. On the same scale, I'd give the S006 a 6. With its CCD sensor, it performs well in the right conditions but isn't able to match up to the S007 or S3 in dynamic range or high ISO performance. Whereas the newer cameras can manage a challenging scene with one shot and corrected in post, the S006 would most certainly require exposure bracketing and/or graduated filters to achieve the same result. But in the right circumstances, the S006 produces lovely images. Comparing the S007 to the SL2 is a tough one. The SL2 offers so many technological advantages and has a killer zoom lineup that just make it so easy to use for landscape photography. But.... the SL2 still can't match up to the S007 for pure dynamic range and file malleability/shadow recovery. Combine that with the larger sensor, the S007 makes a very compelling case as one of the best landscape photography cameras available. The S3 simply builds on that. Ultimately, both are incredible and I'd feel 100% comfortable with either.
@anandk199

@@RedDotForum Thanks so much for the detailed response and even trying to rate it on a scale of 10 per my request.. Your sample images here on this video are truly jaw dropping , I guess I just needed to be convinced on some level that, YES, we could make images that good with s007 or SL2 or even the s006 perhaps.. :P the reason is obvious, we're talking huge bucks here.. and I can see some used S007s around $6K+taxes these days? Then there was this confusion - whether s007 with 37.5MP and MF sensor can compete with 47MP SL2 FF sensor.. in other words, if you had the money to buy either which one would you prefer should have been the question :) If you don't mind another question - Panasonic 24-70 f2.8 vs Leica 24-90 f2.8-4 - is there a clear winner? If you had the money for Leica 24-90 would you still go for the Panasonic or just get the Leica glass instead?

No IBIS, 1 AF Point (!) and 2018 (S3) tech for 18.000 EUR. The GFX-50 S (II) and GFX-100S are 2022 looking like "bargains" in contrast. S3 features a 45x30mm Sensor, both GFX a 44x33mm. Lovely pictures David! But i think, Fujifilm since 2016 really pushed the boundaries, for Price/Performance, in terms of digital medium format. Hasselblad's X1D-50c (II) is also lagging behind in terms of tech, price and performance, anno 2022. Of course, a pro landscape photographer would find use for any of these, when being into the system. /typos fixed.

@RedDotForum 4 года назад
For sure. The S3 isn't revolutionary. Rather, it is evolutionary, building on proven technology and features of the S007. The Maestro II processor in the S3 can process 320 megapixels per second which is plenty for the S3's modest frame rate. Other Leica cameras have faster processors. For instance, the SL2 uses the Maestro III which is necessary as the camera can shoot up to 20 frames per second at 47 MP, performs 187 MP multi-shot stitching, and shoots 10-bit 4:2:2 4K DCI up to 60fps.

Yes. The S3 has a sensor that is 60% larger than full frame 35. Keep in mind that even in film days, medium format encompassed different formats - 6x4.5, 6x6, 6x7, 6x9. On digital it's the same story, with 30x45, 33x44, 36x48, 40x53 all qualifying as medium format.

Leica: You're wrong, the 37MP S is all the resolution you need. Resolution is really not important. Also Leica: The 64MP S is significantly better.
@RedDotForum
@RedDotForum 4 года назад
Actually, both statements are accurate. Not everyone needs 64MP. I've been using the S System for the last ten years and have enjoyed the outstanding 37MP images. I have prints that are 40x60 inches that show more visible detail than those at 24x36. I've seen other photographers' prints at 5x7 *feet* in a gallery show that were simply amazing. So, yeah, 37MP is totally fine for the vast majority of photographers, even overkill for many. But for those that want to push the quality envelope to the max, 64MP is better. I don't personally crop my images, but others do. For them, more pixels means more ability to crop. Given the market value of used S007 cameras right, I'd advise most photographers to look to this option first.
@duodua4130
@duodua4130 4 года назад
@@RedDotForum Rubbish. People were pleading for more resolution and Leica's whole schpiel was a very poor argument that 37MP was enough when it WASN'T. 60MP is better but the 007 should have been 60 and now it's well and truly eclipsed by the 100 and 150MP offerings elsewhere. 60MP is OK but it's not enough anymore and especially so at that price. Now we're going to hear the same argument that 60MP is some kind of godly amount of resolution (when it isn't) and more resolution isn't important (when it is) and even after they've acknowledged how much better 60MP and more resolution is. Shockingly slow company and woeful marketing that treats their customers as idiots.
