Thank you gentlemen. For both this in depth guide and the recently produced lense guide. There is so little out there in terms of actual image examples from the different lenses. I watched all 2 hours and wanted more. Great passion and work.

@@RedDotForum It was nice to not only see people who understand the camera but also enjoy the format. It felt the way I felt the first time I entered a Leica store, like a family united by the simple passion of seeing and sharing the world around. No professional or camera snobbery. Cheers for the response.

You forgot to mention Hasselblad H-System Lens users with many lenses can actually adopt these on the Leica S via adapter with full control of Auto focus and Central Shutter control and data reading.
@RedDotForum

You're absolutely right. Definitely an oversight on our part. We meant to discuss the S-Adapter-H and functionality with Hasselblad H lenses but didn't get around to it in the live stream.

Hi can you tell me will Leica S make a adapters for the Rollei SLX lens I used the 6008 lens to work on the Leica S ? Also if I were to buy a used Leica S is the first one any good or S2 it is about price, money is tight so I am looking for the low is price. on lens is the 70mm or 100mm which is the normal and which is the better of the two. Thank you

For portrait work using an SL body and S lenses, would you recommend the 120mm or 100mm S lens (or stick with the 90mm Summicron-SL)? I'm coming from a Canon 5D IV and 85mm 1.2L II, and I'm looking for that "perfect" portrait lens for my SL. I currently have the 90mm APO Summicron-M, which I love, but I would really like the convenience of AF. Thanks again!
@RedDotForum
@RedDotForum 4 года назад
Both the 100 and 120 S lenses would offer a wonderful rendering for portraiture, but the AF experience will not be as quick as a native SL lens. Likewise, the 90 APO-Summicron-SL is much more compact and easy to handle than the larger S glass. If you had both an S camera and an SL, going for a 100 or 120 S lens might make sense, but if all you need is fantastic 90mm for your SL, I'd probably go for the native SL prime. Performance-wise, the 90 SL will be superior than the 90 APO M that you currently have.
@Lerxst101

This was such an amazing talk, as they all have been. With respect to your points about the design of the S system, and even designing the lenses taking into account the cover glass thickness, wouldn't the same be true about the SL system?
@RedDotForum
@RedDotForum 4 года назад
Thanks for the feedback. Interesting question. While we can't say for sure about the SL lenses, we tend to doubt it. The S lenses were designed to only work on S camera bodies as a closed system. SL lenses work on both full frame SL and SL2 bodies, APS-C bodies like the CL and TL2, and need to be compatible with L-Mount Alliance partners' cameras. With such a semi-open system there is far more variability with regards to sensor design. It's possible this is part of the design spec of SL glass, but not probable.

Rewatching this. Great stuff guys. I have two further questions. Why isn't there a 1:1 macro in the lineup? Can you show pics of the TS tabletop shot. The minimum focus distance on the TS lens is too high to get a meaningful magnification for watches.
@RedDotForum
@RedDotForum 3 года назад
Given the already large size of the 120 APO-Macro with a 1:2 ratio, a 1:1 design would be massive, and therefore not practical. And up until the 60 APO-Macro-TL, Leica has never made a 1:1 macro lens for any system. Unfortunately, we don't have access to the tabletop images from that initial 120 T/S test shoot. I'd agree that the lower magnification of that lens wouldn't make it ideal for watch photography.

RedDotForum thanks. i have used the TL60 on the SL - borderline useful as it becomes 10Mp. On the SL2, somewhat better. But would prefer 1:1.

I own a Q2 which has the ability to sync with flash at 1/1000th. I would like to test out the S3 with leaf shutter lenses for shooting dance with Profoto lighting at 1/1000th. Can you set the mirror up for continuous shooting? I don't like the idea of the mirror working all day, it will wear out the camera. For those who want mirrorless. Having a conventional set up with a mirror saves on battery life. Also, the analog viewfinder should be great to work with. So I do understand that. I have tried using the fuji GFX with Hasselblad glass with the adapter. This works, but the fuji isn't cut out for all day shooting. It overheats eventually. Build quality isn't half as good. I am worried about no true 16bit colour with the Leica (covered below) will have to test and see. Last question is has anyone put a canon 24mm shift lens on the Leica S? Alot of architectural photographers are doing this with the fuji. Which is proving a nice combination. If it was possible on the Leica it would be wonderful..

Hi guys, I have Leica S3 and 100mm f2 on back order. I’ve heard people talk about how difficult it is to nails focus with this lens. Because of shallow depth of field and the focus and recompose. Should I go with different lens? I mainly shoot portraits for hobby.

I have to respectfully disagree with Josh’s answer to the question regarding using SL lenses on an S body. His reply that the SL lens doesn’t cover the sensor of the S, while being true, isn’t the reason. If it were, then you wouldn’t be expounding on the use of TL lenses on SL bodies, because TL lenses also don’t cover the sensor of the SL. The real reason is flange distance. The S has a mirror box while the SL doesn’t.

Why did Leica opt out of 16Bit Depth, and down graded to 14Bit Depth on the Leica S3 ? 16Bit Depth is the reason we forked $10k extra to get. I don’t mind 14Bit but I won’t pay anything above $8k for in any brand.
@RedDotForum
@RedDotForum 4 года назад
There is some confusion over bit depth. The S007 produces 16-bit DNG files, but from a 14-bit D/A conversion. Yet it still offers 15.3 stops of dynamic range, more than any other still camera. Not having a 16-bit conversion is certainly not holding the camera back. The same goes for the S3. They didn't downgrade to 14-bit. The D/A precision on all the S cameras, going back to the original S2 has always been 14-bit, then stored in a 16-bit DNG file. Ultimately, the end result is what matters here, and the S3 performs admirably in that respect with even great SNR than the incredible S007. You can read more about sensor design in the Leica S from a sit-down discussion a few years back that I had with Dr. Volker Zimmer, the head of R&D for Leica: www.reddotforum.com/content/2014/11/why-leica-is-staying-at-37-5mp-for-the-s-typ-007/

guys I wouldn't want to be controversial, but just wonder if Leica shouldn’t think twice about the S3, particularly considering the price point, the Fuji competition at a much lower cost (not to mention the A7RIV... a full frame but with the same resolution) and Phase and Hassel as larger sensor Mfs with an undisputably higher price, but still affordable for those who can spend the kind of money that an S system involves. I just don't see it. I love Leica products, I have a Q and am about to purchase an SL, but I just can’t see the place of the S in the market

The S2 was not the first ground up digital mf camera. The Hasselblad H was introduced in 2002.
@RedDotForum
@RedDotForum 4 года назад
The H1 was a film camera that was set up to take digital backs. Initially, the camera was compatible with Kodak, Phase One or Imacon digital backs. But in all cases, the camera and the back were powered separately with two different battery systems and were configurable with independent menu interfaces. The overall system wasn't truly integrated, although it was designed with digital in mind. The S2, by comparison, was a completely integrated digital medium format system. The lenses were even formulated with the cover glass of the sensor as part of the optical pathway.

Leica S needs to move with the times. Can they make it mirror less, like the SL and have a 100mp
@RedDotForum
@RedDotForum 4 года назад
The S3 can certainly keep pace with the times with regards to image quality, speed, responsiveness and optics. Dynamic range and ISO performance are class leading. The lens lineup is extraordinary. Many S users pick the S specifically because they prefer a traditional DSLR with an optical viewfinder. A mirrorless medium format camera would most likely necessitate an entirely new line of lenses. Leica already offers more mounts than much larger camera companies (S, SL, TL, M). Adding in a fifth lens line is not cost effective for them at this point. Not everyone wants or needs 100MP. Indeed, 64MP with lenses that can resolve that level of detail at all apertures and distances is quite an achievement.
@yevgenypshenichny781

RedDotForum the optical viewfinder is the man attraction for me. There are other MF digital cameras if one need an electronic viewfinder and face recognition AF. The only thing I would want for my new S3 is a stabilization in the zoom, and , maybe a new mid telephoto stabilized lens for this High ISO camera.

Guys, great content but incorrect at 1h02 the whole discussion on crop factor for S lenses is wrong and confusing. It’s quite simple. S lenses on full frame need to be cropped by factor of 0.8. So a 70mm s becomes 56mm on 35mm full frame and 180mm S becomes 144mm
@RedDotForum
@RedDotForum 4 года назад
Trust us. We are 100% sure about this. No crop factor is necessary when using S lenses on the SL or SL2, which are full frame 35mm format. Indicated focal length is the actual focal length for full frame. The 0.8x crop factor only applies to the larger medium format sensor on the S camera. For a full explanation on this, please see my guide to S lenses: www.reddotforum.com/content/2020/04/the-definitive-guide-to-leica-s-lenses/
@DrMaximilien
@DrMaximilien 4 года назад
RedDotForum in Leica’s page for the S007 (which I own and use), in the “Lens” section it reads: “Crop Factor 0.8 equivalent to 35 mm format”. See about 1/2 way here: us.leica-camera.com/Photography/Leica-S/Leica-S-Typ-007/Details
@jlehrer1890
@jlehrer1890 4 года назад
@@DrMaximilien The crop factor is only calculated when you mount S lenses on an S body. What the instruction manual is trying to explain (translated from German I am sure, and not perfectly) is that in order to calculate the lens' equivalent focal length in 35mm format terms, you need to use a 0.8 multiplier. If you mount an S lens on an SL or SL2, the focal length is as inscribed on the lens. Just recently I tested, on an SL2, an SL 35 APO against an S-35mm f/2.5 ASPH, and they had the exact same field of view, as expected.
