Different camera edit of Inside Out from the Live in Berlin DVD, showing Lee Sklar (from 2:48) and Chester Thompson playing for most of the song (and not forgetting the background singers).
Just watching Sklar's fingers as he plays bass is a wonder to behold. Incredibly fluid and engaging playing. definitely one of the great bass players of all time.
He definitely is great. He plays bass...he doesn't try to stand out and play 'lead bass', like a lot of well known 'bass' players do. Even when he does something a little flashy, he still serves the song. Always tastefully.
Lee plays so fluently, so smooth... he never looks at his neck... amazing bass player... Fantastic timing, huge sense of groove and vital support to the music... woaow...
As a 40 year fan of Phil and his band, I am so happy to see a whole new young generation of fans here that found and love Leland Sklar and Daryl Stuermer and appreciate them for not only their immense talent, but also their contributions to so many other artists and Phil. Fantastic
The name. Leland Sklar. Provided bass parts for over 2000 records. Not to mention, motion picture soundtracks and major tours. Pop,Jazz, Country, rock _ dude is a chameleon. This 5.26m clip is just a prime example of why he's worked for so long. Grooving. Pocket is wonderous. Bass tone is killing. A serious joy to watch. Always in awe of this man. You are absolutely AMAZING brother.
Sklar & Chester Thompson are rock steady! Love the way PC was looking at Chester during some of the drum fills, total approval & admiration from great drummer to great drummer!
Daryl (Top Tier Guitarist- plus) is killing it, Chester is right on the groove and Lee has it all locked together. Just absolutely wonderful music from a time that will NEVER be duplicated, ever again!!!
I finally hung up my bass after 52 years full time when covid shut everything down. Leland has a natural approach to not only the melodic structure, but most importantly, the timing. Bass players have 2 jobs, the melodic, and the percussive section. Leland is a true master.
Far and away one of the best rhythm sections ever, Leland Sklar on bass and Chester Thompson on drums/percussion. These two were locked together as if it was a single person playing both parts. 😎🤘
Really great bass players like this are often never really heard isolated so we don’t know how great they are until we can SEE them play. Leland has just amazing technique and touch. Bravo sir!!
Leland is so flawless, his playing have so much groove. You should go check his Channel, He is still amazing player and playing all the old song he played on.
After watching numerous video’s of Leland’s playing, I love how deep, and filled with emotion, he gets into the songs. Money can’t buy the experience he has!,,
Think of it this way....I would give anything to be AS good at ANYTHING as these musicians are with their instruments, it's humbling. I hope people are still marveling at this live performance 100 years from now.
That is sensational. I must share my Leland story. Back then I was a hooked on Phil and Genesis. When Phil toured Aus I would see every Sydney show (don’t remember how many but he almost did a residency 😁) and would sleep out to get great tickets. Pretty much always front row or there about. So after a couple of nights of shows and me in nearly the same seat every night Leland acknowledged me. The only band member to do that (not that I expected or wanted it) by giving me a wave, a smile and a thankyou and applause back to me as I applauded him. It was a moment of real connection between two music lovers. That might sound exaggerated but it wouldn’t have stuck with me all these years if it had been a flippant gesture. He appreciated that the audience is half of what makes a great show.
I always like to watch reactions and motions of the artists and look at 4:00 to 4:05 where Lehland starts singing along to himself and makes eye contact with Phil then they both quickly smile and continue on smooth as a cat. This was one great group of performers, every single one of them.
The stages and crowds Lee Sklar has seen and played in his lifetime, He's seen a million(s) faces, and ROCKED them ALL..... will never be another like him
The music comes from within one's self. It has to be felt when played, its a wonderful feeling that nothing else can compare to. This is a perfect example.
Exactly why I play the bass, I want to feel it when I play... along with all of my neighbors. Joking aside, what a great live gig; these guys are definitely locked up and "in the music."
WOW Leland Sklar THE BEST as the vibe and grove that you exert makes the whole beat just folwwwww, thank you for showing a real master at work WOW Leland, I've been a fan since the 80's, greetings from Sydney Australia PEACE!!!
I can’t tell you how many times when watching concert footage, that i spot Mr. Sklar adding his two cents.😂 What a great musician, and storyteller. Much respect brother.
Certainly one of THE MOST talented human beings EVER to inhabit planet Earth. REAL sorry he’s struggling of late. God Bless you Phil, you are an awesome entertainer. Prayers…
My F'ing GOD!!!!!!! Imagine being on stage performing this song...just once!!!!!!!! And how do you think it would feel to be Daryl Stuermer nailing that lead break at the end...I would have to work on myself mentally to hold it together. Has to be one of the greatest feelings...ever!!!!!!
This has to be one of the “greatest” bands ever to have been put together! Every musician at the top of their game and when Phil brought them all together..........wow! Would have loved to have seen this tour. Magical.
One can only imagine what it's like to be one of them, sitting at home, looking at a stack of bills that need to be paid...wondering when (and where ?) their next gig is gonna be...when outta the blue the phone rings...and it's Phil: "I'm putting a band together...9 month tour...mostly europe...two gigs in the U.S....one down in Sao Paulo...then possibly another album...got 6 new songs to put down on tape...a few more to work out...I like your stuff, heard a few of the gigs you've done...are you interested ?" I'd be like....uhmmm...like YEAH ? !
I think at this point in his career, Leland Sklar had played on over 14,000 major label songs or something. These days, it's like 25k-30k songs. It's so many that nobody, even Sklar, knows the exact number. Dude is about as legendary as a legend can be.
Agreed (minus the druggie aspect of being hippie; he didn’t do drugs or alcohol and thanks to that we all get to benefit from his clear memory and long career)
Every person on that stage is absolutely top draw, hand picked by Phil who at this point could have anyone in the world play for him. Its an honour to watch and learn.
Leland's cheeky little bass wobble at 3.40 always hits the spot, for all the shows on the But Seriously tour i was waiting for that, bloody brilliant!!!!:))))
You’d be hard pressed to find a better rhythm section duo than Chester Thompson on drums and Leland Sklar on bass. They were fixtures for Phil Collins on his solo tours.
And cool as a cat too. Met him years ago and one hell of a guy. Him, Daryl and Chester are AWESOME musicians and work together like a well oiled machine...
30 years later I saw a white bearded Leland Sklar talking about music on RU-vid and do playalongs to the songs of Phil Collins and I`m soooo glad, that I can type this comment listening to this awesome music!
