I recently explored the two Lemko villages of Lipna and Jasionka where my great grandparents were born and grew up in what is present day Poland. There is a nod to Operation Vitsula here where the communists forcibly relocated Lemko villages to Western Poland and Ukraine in 1947.
I'm the first person in my family based in the US to visit these locations and it was a great honor for me and an incredible learning experience.

Dear daveyg14201, Operation "Vistula" - was the only forcible deportation (forced resettlement) of approx. 40,000 Lemko-Rusyns by the new Polish communist troops to the German lands in 1947, that is to the North, North West and Western part of present day Poland. This operation has touched those Lemko-Rusyns who VOLUNTARILY did not leave to the USSR in 1944-1946 years.

My Lemko grandfather came to the U.S about that time. Worked hard here and had a son (my dad) and a daughter. Thank god they were American citizens. Luckily they chose to come back when they were in their teens. My Grandfather wasn't lucky. He was forced from his land by the Polish communists. In other words, they stole his land. They forced him to go to the Ukraine.

Not correct. Almost half a million Ukrainians (including Lemkos) were forcibly deported to Soviet Ukraine between 1944 and 1946. Another 70,000 Lemkos who had remained during the 1944-46 deportation were forcibly deported by the Polish government into previously German occupied Polish territories. Ergo there were TWO forced deportations>

@@catnap387 Correction; In 1947, about 40,000 Lemkos-Rusyns were forcibly relocated to the north, north-west and west of today's Poland. NOT IN 1944-46.

@@catnap387 Correct. Many people who refused deportation did not make it. They were dealt with by other means. I know. My Grandfather and family wound up in Ukraine S.S R. Russophobia still exists.

@@catnap387, Until the winter 1915, there were no barracks in THALERHOF Cocentration Camp. Prisoners slept on the ground in the open-air during rain and frost. According to U.S. Congressman Medill McCormick, prisoners were beaten and tortured. On November 9, 1914 official report of field marshal Schleer said there were 5,700 Carpatho-Rusyns, Lemkos in Thalerhof. In all, 20 thousand people were prisoners of Thalerhof from September 4, 1914 to May 10, 1917. THALERHOF and TEREZIN was an Austro-Hungarian - (first in the civilized world) - Concentration Camps created for the Lemko-Rusyn in 1914 of the Eastern Church (both Orthodox and Greek Catholic). Approximately 20 thousand of Carpatho-Rusyns, Lemkos where intern. Many of them were tortured and executed, included Women and Children. Irony is that ALL of them were innocent of accused treason against Austro-Hungarian Empire by UKRAINIAN SLAVIC brother(s).
