Why are the early church beliefs important today? How can studying early church writings help to clarify scripture for us? In this episode, David Bercot shares the most important lessons that he has learned through studying church history. David encourages us to not view the early church writings as scripture, but as insight into how the authors understood scripture.

This video is 25 minutes, but the podcast is 33 minutes. Is there more in the podcast than RU-vid?

We edit the podcast and videos separately. Usually, though not always, the podcasts end up being longer than the videos.

@@AnabaptistPerspectives Have you watched the video that I made about the Pyramids and the Flood? It shows how the genealogy in the Septuagint is more accurate than the Hebrew Masoretic. My video is called “Were the Pyramids Built before the Flood?” The early church fathers like Eusebius defended the genealogy in the Septuagint. I’d be interested in hearing your feedback.

"I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth." -1 Tim. 3:15 We are either supported by that pillar and standing on that ground, or we are leaning on our own understanding, whether as individuals or as groups.

The early Church fathers, either pre or post Nicaea were Catholic bishops who recognized the Petrine Primacy, said Mass and celebrated the sacraments. All that Constantine did was to stop the Christian persecution and had no say on Church teaching or practice. Even at the Council of Nicaea, Constantine only held a honorary position and the theology was left to the theologians. The Church has always been Catholic in union with the Petrine Primacy. "It is incumbent to obey the presbyters who are in the Church-those who, as I have shown, possess the succession from the apostles; those who, together with the succession of the episcopate, have received the infallible charism of truth, according to the good pleasure of the Father. But [it is also incumbent] to hold in suspicion others who depart from the primitive succession, and assemble themselves together in any place whatsoever, either as heretics of perverse minds, or as schismatics puffed up and self-pleasing, or again as hypocrites, acting thus for the sake of lucre and vainglory. For all these have fallen from the truth". - Ireneaus of Lyons (a disciple of Polycarp of Smyrna), Against Heresies, 4:26:2, 180 AD “The Lord said to Peter, “On this rock I will build my Church, I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven and whatever you shall bound or loosed on earth will be bound or loosed in heaven” [Mt 16 18-19]….What kind of man are you, subverting and changing what was the clear intent of the Lord when he himself conferred this upon Peter? Upon you, he says, I will build my Church; and I will give you the keys.” - Tertullian, Modesty 21, 220 AD “Where was Marcion then, that shipmaster of Pontus, the zealous student of Stoicism? Where was Valentinus then, the disciple of Platonism? For it is evident that those men lived not so long ago - in the reign of Antoninus for the most part - and that they at first were believers in the doctrine of the Catholic Church, in the church of Rome under the episcopate of the blessed Eleutherus, until on account of their ever restless curiosity, with which they even infected the brethren, they were more than once expelled.” - Tertullian, The Prescription Against Heretics 22,30 [A.D.200])

Every true christian was considered "catholic" since "catholic" means "universal". But Roman Catholicism is different. The early church fathers didn't taught us to pray to Mary, dead saints etc. I don't see them either teaching us to build icons or statues. Dance around it how much you want but what roman catholics do with Mary looks like a worship and the current pope who is heretic with big "H", even from the past we know about popes who were truly wicked so "Papacy" isnt biblical, if it was, it would remain pure. As for the first quote of Tertullian can you give me the source to read it in context?
@GR65330
@GR65330 2 года назад
@@dimitartodorov4826 Yeah... they did teach the "Communion of the Saints" and prayers to the saints. This can be found in the teachings of the pre-nicaean fathers. The oldest Marian prayer found on the original papyrus dates at around the 3rd century. The prayer goes: Beneath thy compassion, we take refuge, O Mother of God: do not despise our petitions in time of trouble, but rescue us from dangers, only pure one, only blessed one. All you need to do is check out the catacombs of the first three centuries of Christendom to see they had no problems with icons and relics. You tube won't let me post links but the source of the Tertullian quote is posted with each post. Pope Francis is not a heretic as he hasn't renounced any Catholic teaching but actually reinforces Catholic teaching through his writings.

@@dimitartodorov4826 As well, expecting any leader to be impeccable and pure is ridiculous. Even Jesus had His Judas; Peter denied Him 3 times; and all the apostles abandon Christ at the cross except for John. In the the 2000 years of the Church, there might have been 10 corrupt Popes out of 266 pontiffs.
@dimitartodorov4826
@dimitartodorov4826 2 года назад
@@GR65330 Are you seriously comparing our Lord Jesus Christ to these wicked popes? Jesus Himself was a perfect and pure. Every pope must be blameless, remember what Paul said in 1 and 2 Timothy about the requirements for decons, elders etc. We know from history, about popes so wicked that it makes to us clear that a pope CAN be a wicked person. We talk about popes who murdered, raped, had orgies, have done every wicked thing you can imagine. Why hold the papacy as authority when we know that even a non-christian (fake christian who just professes belief in Christ) can become a pope? As for the current pope, having interfaith worships. Saying that christians, muslims, jews and hindus worship the same God. Saying that we all (talking about people from other religions) are children of God. You should know from the Bible that not everyone is a child of God, in fact most people are NOT children of God.

@Rei H. thanks I’ll read through this However I do already know Romanism wasn’t a thing And there are MANY things added later that are not there ore 300 or so. And not biblical By the way bishop simply meant elder There was no concept of papacy etc And tone was one if the many churches Not THE church Bottom line. Constantine merged the state with the church And it went down from there.

@Rei H. well There it is Arrogant judgement Based on incorrect information What’s so bad is PAGANISM in the RCC State empire mixed with the church No one prior to that would have even allowed such Worldly nonsense No You’ve proven my point You need to actually read the letter of clement. Ignatious. Etc They would have condemned every about the church under Constantine And even more so today Take care
