In preparation for adding larger wheels and tires to my sons 2006 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon TJ red 2 door, we knew the stock tailgate hinges and tire carrier were going to need to be strengthened up. So in this video, we spent a couple hours installing a MORryde tailgate hinge with a Rugged Ridge tire carrier. This was a fairly easy install, but it wasn’t without a couple challenges along the way….

My comment got sent before ready, I was saying I’m 80 and have been having family fun with Jeep’s since 1978, bought fist Jeep in 79 and have had one since then, my kids all have Jeep’s and we all enjoy yearly Jeep trips. My reason for also writing is, you mentioned with Jordans Jeep about adding a “tummy tucker” I have a brand new one never Installed on my 2003 Rubicon. If you need one let me know, I would be proud to have it included in Jordans Jeep build.

I'm really glad you done this how to video on putting on stronger hinges and mounting bracket! I've seen several Jeeps in your video who had done this, but this is the first seeing someone actually upgrading the hinges. Great video of you and your son doing this. he done a great intro on the video!

I put the same mount on my '01. Had a bolt break in the tailgate. Took a thick washer and ground a couple flats in it, so a 9/16" open end wrench would fit on it. Welded it good and solid to the little bit of bolt still sticking up. Drenched it in penetrating fluid. Started to work the washer/bolt combo back and forth and back and forth until it finally came free. Sometimes the simplest become the hardest.

“Take your time here, there’s no need to scratch the paint”!! I had a number of “stubborn” bolts on my YJ, was a real exercise in patience. One thing I always do is run a tap in and out of all bolt holes and it sure makes a difference. And sometimes walking away for a coffee is the best thing to do!

The only reason a rear bumper mounted tire carrier might be nice is to mount other accessories like Jerry cans and hi lift. But with how you guys did it, could fit a much slimmer rear bumper, great for clearance and weight! Looking good, enjoying the build. Stay safe, glad you got some time together

Like one other person said, it’s best to change out one hinge at a time ensuring no change in alignment. Worked great for my JKUR 😎. However, your setup with the large frame probably prevents this from happening. Great job in any event!

It’s crazy how similar your build is starting out like mine, low weight is key. Check out savvy off-road and gen right that’s what I did with my Lj and with full interior half doors, 35s, and me 190lbs in it weighs 4340. Bumpers, skids (tummy tuck and gas tank skid) fenders, full size spare, and winch. Keep up the good work! Can’t wait to see what u do next!

Great job.. on the bolt that's ceased.. you can take a angle grinder or air cut off tool and cut the head of the bolt into a rectangle. Then you can get at it with a c wrench. Of course you will have to cut off the seatbelt mechanism.

Jordan stole the show... younger and taller... lol.... awesome to see father and son working together... especially appreciate leaving in all the little "issues" that arise in these installs... there always are such things and most edit them out and make us feel like morons for not have everything turn out perfect... almost all mods have hiccups

Good stuff, love the TJ content. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who get sidetracks by the small stupid stuff from time time. I do have two observations on the install. First since I watched te video I know to remove the seat belt and carpet BEFORE unhooking the door. I should make the job easier on the rest of us. Secondly, I'm a fan of paining over those areas Jeep didn't during manufacturing (like under the hinges). Probably a bit OCD on my part, but we get alot of rain around here so extra protection doesn't hurt. Attention to details. ;-)

Replaced my hinges the hard way. Lots of corrosion and siezed bolts. Gate was fully off. No problems with alignment when I put new hinges on. Just kentucky windage (eyeballing it) works fine. FYI.

That is the exact same set-up I put on my TJ. I love the MORryde tailgate support but not the RR spare holder. The Rugged Ridge holder is showing rust spots within 2 months and moves my tire too far away from the tailgate (33X12.5R15 with 4" of backspacing). I see your tire isn't close to the snubbers either. I have the Hyline tire holder on order...hopefully that holds the tire closer.

Nice... for that support bracket if you couldn't get that cage bolt up, wouldn't be too hard to drill holes into the plate and the splashwell and then put bolts there with washers. Access to that area in through the bottom of the plastic rear well. For the '06 TJ, that area is also where the evap system is located. As for the alignment of the holes of the plates onto the tailgate, I would have recommended a round metal filer to help elongate as necessary. There is only 1 company that puts out a tailgate bridge support for a spare tire carrier, Rugged Ridge Spartacus. I run a 35" MTs on my 97 TJ and mounted to the stock spare tire carrier. The hinges really haven't had an issue cause its an OH Jeep and basically they are freakin' tight. Spare it also tight against those rubber snubbers, did have to space out 1/4" though. Only issue came when the spare went on was the overall height. Bottom of tire would hit the bumper, barely with my 1" polyethylene body bushings (replaced the worn out stock rubber ones). Something in the future to find out.
@jakematthews6982
@jakematthews6982 4 года назад
The bolts that hold the seatbelt retractor is an interference fit. The hole is round but the bolt is not. That’s so the bolt can’t back itself out. A proper-sized torx bit on a 1/2” socket and long ratchet is the safest way to get it out without stripping. It’ll be tight the whole way out.
