Well Ange I must have been on a similar thought process as you as this week I started a new scrap project after sorting out a basket of sock leftovers to use up! I’ve started the Rectangular Scrap blanket by Erin Lindsay. Now I am not really a crocheter so I thought it would do me good to have a break from knitting socks and do some simple crochet! I am holding two 4 ply yarns together ( to use up even more wool) and hopefully produce a squishy blanket! I am delighted to join in the MAL with you all. Hope your family member continues to do well x

Yay so glad that this mal was perfectly timed for you to join in. A nice squishy blanket sounds wonderful 😃

Knitting helps through these worrying times. I often crochet blankets with my left overs but last year started making fingerless mitts which are good for sock yarn and a change from socks. The color palette socks by Laura Moorats is a good sock design. I knit quite a lot of baby knits so a little stripped jumper using a plain top down pattern is good for me.

Thank you Jane. I love the idea of some little baby striped jumpers 😃 And thank you for the sock pattern recommendation too 🧡

If the end of the year looms and you wish you accelerate your scrap usage, I recommend crocheting baskets as in the RU-vid video by Pretty Peaceful. I’ve been making them round to 5 stitches between increases and then about 10-11” tall, which creates a really nice project bag size that stands open on its own. The pattern uses 7 strands of yarn at once so scraps make gorgeous marls! It also takes very little brain power since it’s just single crochet. Remember to put your own oxygen mask on first- caregiving is hard work and taking a break to restore yourself is allowed!

😃. So lovely to wake up to see a new podcast from you. Have you considered selling your socks? I would definitely buy them. You could donate the money or perhaps use it to help cover travel costs to see you sick family member. So sorry to hear their sickness is ongoing. 😘 I knitted two pairs of socks for elderly neighbours. One the foot is way too long the other the cuff too tight so joining your Make A Long will help me improve my skills. I am search for a pattern for knitting socks in the FLAT for a friend who knits like crazy but only has one hand. Does anyone know of an easy sock pattern for knitted in the flat?🤔
@YarnNYarns
@YarnNYarns 2 месяца назад
Thank you Sheonagh I’d not thought about selling the socks but I might give it some thought. You are so kind knitting for your neighbours and I’m sure you will soon perfect the fit. It took me a few pairs before I got it right too.

I knit a pair of flat socks recently - the pattern is Strobe by Ruth Damaris (Orchard House Designs) - it’s knit from the heel flap to the Toe then back up for the front of the sock, then attaching with a cuff but that could still be done flat and sewn afterwards. It’s a shortie sock and there is a lovely pattern on the front, but they could be modified easily. ❤

Hi Ange, a couple of hat patterns for using odds and ends are the Held Together hat by Lindsey Fowler, and the Scrappy Smarled by Tif Neilan. I have enjoyed both patterns and knit multiple versions of each. Hope your knitting helps you while you help others through their difficulties.

I fully understand the whole knitting your feelings about things into your blankets / projects etc. I’ve made two blankets when my mum and also my sister were ill and I can’t even look at them now! Best to keep to socks and littlies for when times are demanding and tough. XXxx

Hi Ange. Have been thinking of you. Hope your making is helping as you navigate this period of your life. Leftovers and socks are music to my ears. The colour pallet socks pattern is great for leftovers. I could do with another sock project. Got a few hospital appointments over the next few weeks. Also got leftover bits from mini's. Usually, they go into magic knot ball and are added to a never-ending granny square. Remember to care for yourself as you do for others. Self care is so important during challenging times. Sending love, take care. Xx🥰

I'm sorry to hear your family is going through some difficult times. I have so many scraps. There is a very slow mitred square blanket under construction currently, but it's getting too big to work on now. I've had the Sea Glass hat (free pattern) in my queue for ages, so maybe I'll give that a go. Or more socks, considering the amount of holes or thin areas that need mending in most of my older pairs. I'd rather knit new socks. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Hello Ange, I hope that you are well. Sending you and your family love, sending you big hugs. ❤ I think this is a lovely idea. A great way that you can knit on the go, knit something fun and small - and use up some scraps! Thank you, it's a lovely idea for a MAL. Well... i have one of those sock patterns (the Candyman socks) but the other pair and the Skrabucket may have fallen into my basket! I've been thinking about a scrappy pair of socks for the chap for a while - i even got a collection of scraps together, but then put them away - this seems like a great time to start! I've also been thinking about a Litmus Cowl for my bestie using scraps in the colours of the books we read together this year. I've also for a load of cotton left over from a failed project (I've used some for a top), but i might make a crochet Zora bralette. I might start on some baby gifts with leftover dk... I should finish some projects before casting on all the things! Other patterns that might be fun are Snap hat by Tin Can Knits, Fits The Whole Fam hat by Cosy Up Knits (it's a free pattern), Thicksgiving Socks by Summer Lee, and hair accessories .
@YarnNYarns
@YarnNYarns 2 месяца назад
Ooh I love all of your plans, and thank you so much for the pattern suggestions too. The litmus is a great shout for a project that would use up a good amount of scraps. Hope you have fun with the mal and I’ll look forward to seeing what you make 😃🧡
