One of the only games to effectively use sound as a critical part of play. I always wore headphones for the first two games.

+Simon Morris First 3 splinter cell games were good, but nothing beats Theif.

I'm after Spliner Cell 4.

I've finished Chaos Theory but don't really know about Metal Gear Solid. The Splinter Cell series is great, I've done 2 and 3 but not 4 or 1.

@Geralt of Trivia MGS is just way cheesier than thief.

FrozenFoxy exactly, i only kept going just to see how it ends, then i gave up and looked for the ending on youtube. It was fun at first, but the thing that killed it for me was the city hub, very twisted.

***** The gameplay for me still sucked... so none of that would really fix the issues I had with that portion. I want real rope arrows, not contextual... I want to jump, not swoop... I want a bow with a freaking bow sight, for criminy sakes. Even if all of that were to be fixed, the game still stands as a bland story with poor villains and steal-able items that make me feel like I'm going into a restaurant and swiping the silverware when the waiter isn't looking while my niece whines at me that she can't kill the lobster herself. It's just a very poorly done game. I'd rather play Styx: Master of Shadows any day of the week over it... it's the real successor to Thief for me.

***** Well, I rated it a 6 from a standpoint as if I weren't a Thief fan... and a 3 as a Thief fan. I go into quite a lengthy discussion on the few pros and many cons of the game at the end. Swoop was just unwise all together to mix with contextual mantle and jump. There are so many times that mantle or jump fail causing a bad situation to occur or even a game over... that I really can't even count them. There are actually parts cut out of this LP where the contextual jump didn't work around 20-30 times in a row, which I wasn't going to leave in the LP... it was just stupid. Trying to bother with an Iron Man run is ridiculous because of that kind of BS.

***** Honestly, that's more the line I feel like using for Thief: Deadly Shadows... people were hard on it. I always thought it was rather good from day one. Heh. This... I can see for all it's failures and successes. The main success being the side missions and the treasure hunt... which isn't even finished. The main story is bogus along with the main missions.

I've been wanting to get into the older ones. I've played the Dark Mod and enjoyed that. Is this guy using an graphical mods? This looks better than I thought it was.

IAssassinII This is using the TafferPatcher only. It ensures the game is playable on newer systems and does not change anything about the graphics. I did use some graphics upgrades on the original Thief game (Gold/The Dark Project) to make it look more like Thief 2, but that's a different story from this video.

FrozenFoxy Okay thanks. That's good to hear. Are the controls too weird? I remember System Shock 2 having a pretty strange setup.

IAssassinII System Shock 2 and this game basically have the same controls since they're made by the same developer and run on the same engine. You can always customize them, though.

Mirror's edge almost gave me and my brother a heart attack. I didn't finsih that game but I still love it

fiveredpears You're not wrong, the new Thief game is god awful.

***** They can't seem to make good games anymore. They put too much effort into creating shadow effects forget about the actual game, which is what matters. I would rather play thief 2, with its simple graphics, than any of these modern games.

fiveredpears It don't get it either because the same team who made the new Thief made Deus Ex HR, which was amazing.

***** fiveredpears I recommend Styx: Master of Shadows to both of you. It's the stealth game we all deserved, but never got from Eidos.

agreed. This and the very first thief are the pinnacle of stealth gaming. I've never played anything quite like them.

***** i enjoyed those two as well! the hitman series to me was a bit more complex for me. both had high levels of difficulty but it was in their own right. hitman was more action based but that's just how i view it.

What about Hitman series?

Katherine Lux hitman series is quite enjoyable as well but i would confidently and easily say that the theif franchise in terms of gameplay mechanics and storyline puts thief on a higher echelon

I just watched the video of him in Skyrim and he sounds completely different but it's the same guy so you obviously have a good ear

TheJayson8899 Just try comparing Garrett's voice to any of the Mr. Gutsy/Handy Robots or Harold in Fallout 3. Stephen has a lot of range on the voices he can do.

It was a sad day when Looking Glass Studios folded. They made Thief The Dark Project, Thief II: The Metal age, and System Shock. All awesome games.

That's why when I played that game I rated it from a Thief fan standpoint and from the standpoint of someone who hadn't played the game... so I split the score as 3/10 and 6/10 for each perspective, respectively. It's subpar at best, but it's not the worst thing I've ever played either.

+FrozenFoxy I do think that the originals would be killer if they remastered them.

+Asahi08 Not me. Atmosphere gets ruined when remasters come out in my experience. Doom 3 BFG is a good example of that... also Conker Live and Reloaded.

+FrozenFoxy That is true. They tend to change things enough that it's a completely different game. But I just remember thinking watching the last level on Dark Project and thinking if it's this awesome now I wonder how awesome it would be if they kept the story the same but made it in the style of recent games.

+Asahi08 Well, if you compare Conker's Bad Fur Day to Conker Live and Reloaded... they lost a lot of the personality of the characters when they upgraded the graphics. I don't necessarily see it as a good thing to upgrade graphics... especially if you're losing something along the way. I'd honestly only trust the Thief fan community with a project like that... game companies screw things up for the most part these days.

@@FrozenFoxy Yeah I've found a couple channels that have silent play throughs, but they're dark as shit. I love how easily I can see everything in your vids, so well done on that front. But I was watching so I could feel some of that trademark Thief ambience, for nostalgic purposes. Guess I'll just have to buy the game and play it myself :) Cheers

I highly recommend Good Old Games (GoG) for the platform you buy them from. If you put them on a wishlist, there tend to be sales with the pack of the first 3 games for $15. Well worth it for the first game alone!

Because Deadly Shadows had a third person option. First person is truer to the series, though.

i like 3rd person games.. but using 3rd person in a stealth game seems like cheating cause you can see anything around the character..

***** Yeah for some weird reason when I made this comment I confused Looking Glass Studios with Eidos. I still think Tomb Raider I and Thief I and II have similar textures and all but, yeah they had different development teams.

Publishing companies often share resources across different development teams, which certainly could explain the similarities.
