You are always pretty lucky, if I would buy such a monitor and then replace just the EPROM I am 100% sure the EPROM would be the only part that was not faulty and all the rest is faulty. ;-)

I wonder if people who sell you broken things watch this and get pissed XD

Dude! Come back; I love these videos - educational and entertaining. Better than 90% of the crap people get paid for on RU-vid these days (pretty much the same as bullshit reality TV now). Id love to know how to spot viable broken stuff to buy from eBay, seeing as you have a knack for it!

i love buying something broken for super cheap and fixing it you are one of my favourite channels because of this and you show how simple and easy it is if you invest some time and effort and it really does save money and funnily enough the environment as this wont end up in the rubbish dump! great job as always :)

I am starting to think there is a little bit more than luck involved VectrexRoli He has a nack for finding cool stuff and seeing through their "problems" very quickly. It takes confidence and guts to actually buy something that you -think- you will be able to repair. In the mean time I will just enjoy these videos and hope some day I will find a Vectrex with a faulty mains plug(!!!!)

Wow nice find! I recently picked up a 250 Gb Slim ps3 for really cheep with nothing wrong with it on trademe ( which practicaly is NZ's eBay) a few weeks back. The guy said he was moving and wanted rid of it as he didn't use it any more. He had it listed for a buynow of 50 NZD (about 25 GBP) and it had only been listed for about 20 minutes before I bought it. It came with 2 games ( Mortal combat and fight night round 4) and a red Dual shock 3 Controller. So I was pretty stoked at getting it for that price. I think the trick to getting the bargains is to look through the latest listing as the really good deals don't last long ;)

I've got two of these things, and they keep flickering and will probably go any day now. I spent $700 total, so if $20 can save them, it's worth a try. Thanks for this video man, I'll make sure to refer back to it when they finally do go.

3D doesn't work for me, but the simul-screen feature is an amazing idea. Wish more games and TVs supported that.

awesome man... i bought one of these pieces of crap a few years a go, for 400$!!!! it worked for 2 months.... this gives me hope because i have the 2 red blinkers as well.... cheers!!!

This video is definitely a nice gem; started looking around and found one that works for 115 USD, just missing the backplate and stand, still works. Might make for a nice gaming cabinet if that's your thing.

I bought one these a year and a half ago for $100 new and have been using it for 10 months as a computer monitor. It hasn't died yet, but it does flicker every once in a while when the brightness is higher than 3 or 4. I don't use the monitor much higher than 0 brightness, since it hurts my eyes, so I hope it doesn't die anytime soon o.o

Have you ever seen the game boys that have been put into the shell of a calculator? Basically they disguise a gameboy as a calculator. They are really cool and would be an awesome project for you to make a video about. You Could use a front lit gameboy advance so that way you can have a brighter more screen or a darker screen if you want to use it in class.

Nice one! I didn't know these TV's had a problem, I was really tempted to get one when they came out... I guess since 3D is dead it doesn't matter, but I love KZ3 and some 3D blurays would be nice.

I just bought this (still wait for) I pay $100 for a refurbished one, I bought it even if I read very bad review about that, they don't work long. Thanks a lots for showing the solution, I don't know if I will need it but the review I read was about the refurbished product, no glasses, an extra 7$ + 15 shipping to Canada From who did you bought the replacement part on ebay ?

I remember thinking that was a rotten deal from Sony when they were announced but they'd probably make excellent computer displays if you get one with a good eeprom used.

Brilliant fix! I have been eyeing this monitor for a long time but it has been always way too expensive to even think about seriously. Such a bargain :)

I don't think these ever went for as much as $600 US. The original MSRP was $499 US when it released in late 2011, but quickly dropped to $399 and then $299 from there. By 3rd quarter 2012, they were regularly selling for $199 and by Christmas 2012 they could be had for $99 on clearance at some retailers as they were discontinued around then (or shortly thereafter). Incidentally, that's when I got one. Despite the discontinuation, it seems they were still fairly readily available in stores into 2013 where the price had gone back up to $150-200. Today you can find refurbs if you know where to look but they're long gone from retail stores for the most part. I assume that the high failure rates (and the dropping the prices of TVs/monitors in general) explains the rapid price drop and the subsequent discontinuing of the product, all within less than two years. I think Sony just tried to hide the problems by discontinuing it and hoping people would forget about the whole debacle. In all honestly they should have been hit with a class action and forced to extend the warranty on these, but they made it under the radar I guess. Thankfully mine is still working well *knocks on wood*; I use it almost exclusively as a PC monitor. In US/Can it came packaged with one pair of glasses, Motorstorm Apocalypse, and an HDMI cable. Not sure if the UK bundle came with all the stuff pictured in this video--two pairs of glasses, GT5, remote--but if that's the case it came with a little bit more than we got here.

I've got this same TV and the screen occasionally goes out for no apparent and I was thinking of replacing it in the future but now that I've seen your video I may take a crack at fixing it when it finally goes out.

I just bought this PS3 3d display a couple days ago for $20 because the guy said it had a red blinking light problem. And he said it needed a eeprom chip. Well today I decided to open it up and go with my gut instinct and I fixed it myself. Now you guys are wondering how did he do it. Well here's how. I opened it up and unplugged the display wires and then I put them back into place. Reason y is because one of the wires was loose on the display. If this works for you then like my comment thanks!

Bargain! Well done mate, never knew Sony released such an item. If you think about it though it was kinda cheap for its time. 3D TVs were so pricey.

Nice. Gonna try this and hope it works out. I just bought one for $40 at Goodwill. It worked for about 5 minutes until I hooked my PS3 to it. Disappointed. Fingers crossed.

My display blacks out for 1-2 Seconds now n then, also certain pixels flicker however after a while its fine, Do you still have this problem? Would u recommend that i change the eeprom?

Do you have a particular process for selecting junk to fix? I'm quite keen with electronics, perhaps not as capable as you, but I like the sound of mending some crap for a quick turnaround. It would be cool if you could do a video walking through the selection process, profitable junk to look out for etc.

I got the same display,got it brand new for 100$ Im using it as my pc display for a year now! got no problems with it!I keep the backlight under 5 and turned the hdmi controll off!

Well it's nice to know that Sony basically sold people a $400 future paper weight because they couldn't be bothered to put in a $12 part, and that's the end users price, Sony could have gotten the same piece for a fraction of that.

Wanted one of these real bad when then came out...then I heard the rate with which they broke. Would still like one that worked after an easy fix.

I got one of these for between $150 to $200 and I really liked it for 3D PS3 games, but after a while, it started doing this thing where the screen would go black for a second once every 10 minutes or so. Otherwise, it was an amazing screen. Fantastically low latency, like 7 ms. I just wish I could figure out what was causing the random blackouts.

I'm thinking about buying some broken stuff from ebay and the likes and fixing it up with the hopes of reselling. Are there any consoles that are easier that others to service? Any ones you suggest staying away from?

these things seem to be going for pretty cheap, and if the main issue is faulty EEPROM, that seems to be something easy to fix to get a cheap nice PC monitor.
