I really wanna know what happened to Lacey Chabert after this game was released. What was her reaction to the game? Does she still like the franchise? How much did this game ruin her reputation? So many questions!
It's like she signed on because maybe she even thought "Elise" had something to do with "Eliza" from The Wild Thornberrys. I doubt it, but it's strange to think that she voiced two characters that have almost the exact same name.
I doubt the game hurt her rep too much. Most people who know of her likely didn't know who she was. I can't imagine there being much overlap between Chabert and Sonic fans. As for her opinions on the game, I don't know. She probably didn't like it. I'm more interested on what she thought of the script and story while recording and after the game came out. I wonder if she's on some NDA.
_“What was Sonic Team thinking with this game!?”_ You really want to know? The initial idea Sonic Team had for _Sonic ‘06_ was to make the video game equivalent of a blockbuster movie. They were going to pull out all the stops and make this a big event, hence, I presume, all the extra unnecessary gameplay mechanics and styles. But they got nailed with several major hurdles in the midst of development. Firstly, Yugi Naka (described as “the heart and soul of Sonic” by former Sega of America executive Tom Kalinske) left the company to form his own, saying he wanted to experiment with making new games. Worse still, Sega received a development kit for the upcoming Wii and, realizing it would take a long time to port the game to Nintendo’s less graphically powerful console, decided to create a new, motion-control based Sonic game specifically for the Wii. You know what that means: the development team got split in two! Half the programmers left to go work on _Sonic & the Secret Rings,_ while the other half remained to try and polish _Sonic ‘06._ And then, of course, the final, lethal blow: Sega refused to grant the developers an extension. It was 2006, and not only did Sega desperately want a slice of that sweet, sweet Yuletide rush, but it was Sonic’s 15th anniversary and they needed a game to commemorate the moment. Sonic Team had to rush like hell: many tests were canceled and bug reports ignored to make the cut. And like an undercooked dinner, a miserably faulty _Sonic ‘06_ oozed out onto the shelves to give every Sonic fan indigestion. Of course, none of this excuses the miserable state of the product, which Sega expected fans to spend $60 on. But if you wanted to know how the hell this game became the nightmare that it is... well, here you go. (Source: Wikipedia, mostly)

lol I actually got up, went to the kitchen, dug through the biscuit tin, grabbed a snack, came back and ate the snack before the load screens were done. :D
"Sonic interacts with the human world for the first time" um didn't Sonic been to the human world in Sonic Adventure, SA2, Sonic X, Shadow The Hedgehog, etc.?
GoodNeutralEvilChaos What there are humans in Sonics world? Then where were they in Forces? Wasn’t the whole point the two worlds retcon was to separate the human world and the athropromorfic world?
@@tjlnintendo The two world's retcon doesn't work and you have to apply death to the author fallacy to it. It is a massive plothole that contradicts Literally every single game in the series prior to Lost World, and even in games that don't have any humans other than Eggman, show the planet being named "Earth" the continents from Unleashed can be seen in Colors, South Island is off the coast of the SA2 area, and Mystic Ruins as a whole can literally not work without it being one world. There are not two worlds. Sonic Team forgot basic functions of their own franchise.
And then of course after Wave Ocean Round 2: The Padding, Eggman breaks the 4th wall by saying the most fitting line in the game: "You've Wasted so much of my time", which to be honest is almost like Mike Pollock knew fully well how pointless that shit was, or maybe he played the game and said that after beating the level and they decided that they'd use that as his delivery of the line in-game.
There are precisely nineteen, yes, NINETEEN gameplay mechanics in this game. Here they all are: -Sonic -Tails -Knuckles -Shadow -Rouge -Omega -Silver -Blaze -Amy -Snowboarding Sonic -Sonic & Elise -Mach Speed Sonic -Jet Glider -Armed Buggy -Hover Vehicle -Bike -Super Sonic -Super Shadow -Super Silver What made them think they could finish ALL OF THOSE by 2006?
They literally could've just made the hang gliding sections rouge's parts of a level and scrap the buggy, snowboard and the hovercraft. Maybe replace the hovercraft with Omega.
I remember watching Pokecapn and crew's Blind run of this game. Someone tallied up the time. About 11% of their playthrough, 2.5 HOURS, was spent on the load times. If I can watch Schindler's List in the cumulative time your game spends loading for a typical playthrough, something is seriously wrong.
Even if all the bugs were fixed in this game, the levels, graphics, story, gameplay, loading times and hub worlds will still be horrible. This game was doomed from the start.
The multiplayer is even more broken than he mentioned, I saw it on the super best friends sonic 06 video. You know how a lot of the levels start you off running? Well Crisis City has you run straight and hit a ramp to land on a rail. Problem is, you have to be dead center on the starting road to hit the rail or you die. This isn't a problem in singleplayer because the games starts you running down the center, but in multiplayer the players start to the left and the right of the singleplayer starting mark. Cue several deaths from the characters running forward automatically and hitting the ramp wrong.
Why can't every game just have Super Smash Bros Brawl's loading from the SubSpace Emissary? It's levels are HUGE and how long does it take? 3 seconds the most?
When I played Brawl, I was using a somewhat beaten and old Wii, and I'd owned that copy of Brawl since release, so the loading times were sometimes roughly half a minute.
As someone who does a bit of coding, I'm guessing that loading the textbox from in game resulted in an error so they just lazily reloaded the whole level from scratch to get the textbox to work. Something you'd go back and change when ironing out bugs.
Why would someone cut a game slack, because it was rushed? The developers putting an unfinished game on the shelves on purpose just makes it worse. Sega are not exactly some friends coding a game in their spare time.
Amaranthus616 But you're just one person, and you're trying your best. This is a giant group of professional people purposefully putting out a poorly made game (unintentional alliteration) that wasn't anywhere NEAR finished. Why didn't they just push it to Sonic's 16th birthday so they could have more time???
Obsidian Wasp Holiday cash. That's pretty much it. Some people claim that M$ was the reason to rush the game, but I doubt the X360 was urged for a then inconsistent IP when they were releasing Gears of War that year and had Halo 3 for 07.
@@crashingbasher7376 the pieces can be in obvious places, but not all 3. And you can easily pass emeralds because the radar can only find one piece at a time, unlike SA1.
+GammaWALLE Pretty much the only way to complete that section is to clip through the door at the end that leads to the Goalring. Bad design if you pretty much HAVE to glitch your way past it, because the Ball puzzle is so broken
The most abysmal loading times in terms of sheer length would have to be those from the PC version of _The Sims 3_. Yes, I know they generally vary depending on your computer’s specs, the game’s graphics settings, the number of expansion/stuff packs you have installed, how much store/custom content you added, and even the save file being loaded, but even Vanilla base-game takes at least as long as _Sonic ‘06_ per screen. Fortunately, there’s only two of that length (loading the main menu, then loading a save game or starting a new one) and the second one recently was patched to include a fully-functional I-Spy game that earns LTH points for your Sims once the load is done. So in this instance, I don’t mind waiting five minutes before playing the game. (Loading Create-A-Sim and saving the game also tend to take awhile, but those are on-command actions you don’t need to do more than once every five minutes.) *That Wall of Text in a Nutshell:* _The Sims 3_ at least has an excuse, and eventually a built-in way of passing the time.
Its funny that Clement mention there is no better version of Sonic 06 anywhere and years later, someone is actually remaking this game but better in every way
I gotta be honest, I am like Clement. I know it's really just opinion, and everyone is entitled to it, but I am sick of seeing people say Genesis is a worse game than 06. Or seeing someone say 06 isn't that bad of a game in general.... No no no no no. Just no... No
Yeah, it confuses me too. They say, "Well if it weren't for the bugs and load screens, it wouldn't be that bad." And I'm just like, "Wut?" It's basically saying that it wouldn't be a bad game, just so long as you remove all the bad stuff. WELL NO SHIT! It's true that it'd be be good if the problems didn't exist, but the problems DO exist, so why should we just forget about them? That logic just makes my brain hurt....
And it's not just bugs and load screens. There is still the horrible story, the horrible realism. The badly designed characters. The badly designed levels. The horrible gimmicks (BALL PUZZLE!). Load times and glitches are a problem in this game, but not the main problem
Yeah, those are just two of the many this. I actually kind of envy the people that like this game, because I cannot for the life of me see how anyone finds enjoyment with all the crap in it... :/
I certainly don't envy them. I'm just like "...........You seriously have fun with this piece of garbage?" I've been a Sonic fan since 1996. I've tried hard to have fun with this game......... I really did try. But it just couldn't happen. When I come close to having fun, something always comes around to fuck it up and ruin it
GondarthReturns Same here dude. I've been a fan since 1997. It's so sad that in the time I've been fan until 2006, Sonic went from one of the best and most well known video games that even rivaled Mario to a complete laughing stock with one of the worst fanbases known to mankind and then took years for the series to even barely get back on track. Why people like a game that is not only bad in almost every conceivable aspect you can think of, but also nearly destroyed the franchise and made the majority of the fans turn their heads away from Sonic completely and non-fans look at the series and laugh baffles the fuck out of me. I'll always be a fan of the series, but 06 just has no excuses and fans of this game might as well support bad game design in general.
There are ways to make a game good under strict development times. Melee had about 11 months of development, and it was very narrowly completed, and Mega Man 2 was in between other projects the developers worked on.
The load times... that's actually one of the reasons XCOM: Enemy Within impresses me; the load times are close to nonexistent most of the time, despite the game looking so good and having all that detail on weapons, armors, the aliens... and the customization for your soldiers, of course. It speaks volumes of the effort that went into optimization... and the load times in Sonic '06 speak volumes of how little effort went into optimization.
9:52 Aside from classic Rareware as it was, that was the beauty of owning an N64 console vs. owning a Playstation or a Dreamcast console at the time. NO LOADING SCREENS! I'm serious! ALL classic games by Rareware for Nintendo 64 would have been disgustingly ruined by that!
In the time that it loaded, I was able to bout up my 3DS, bout up Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Spirit of Justice, press "continue", choose a safe file, bout up said safe file, and when Clement started talking, it turned on. I'm not even slightly lying.
quizboy99 and levels,and failing at those!thats...200+13x4=252x 9(characters)=2268 load times!+fails....say you fail half the time,thats...3402 load times,those could be 10 minutes long,so 3402x10=34020 minutes of your life gone!+the game,which is 10 hours long,thats 34620 minutes of your life!577 hours,thats more than a week!
Can I honestly say that this is pretty good to listen to for background noise...? I'm not saying it's terrible, just that it's half an hour long compared to other videos. The length is perfect. xD
You actually do have a point to play as Silver in 2 player race! You know why? If your enemy happens to jump near you, you can just grab him, AND FLING HIM INTO SPACE. He will fly all the way over to the top of the world, and then respawn. At that point you are at the goal already! This game sucks.
My friends and I made multiplayer fun. We made this skit called 'Silver's birthday', and we discovered a glitch off-camera. We made a spring float in mid-air.
Clement forgot to mention that there was ALWAYS real non anthro animals in the sonic universe even since Sonic 1, so that point of his was null. Im not defending the game, im just saying...
Take note, systemd developers, we don't need a million features in a INIT program (Program kernel starts first to load everything else), and now we got bugs like the semi-rare long shutdown time.
I watched this complete review before but I just like seeing it again it's my favorite part of your channel I actually never played this game before but when I play it I know I will hate it just like shadow the hedgehog the game
hey, woah, i didnt mind shadows multiplayer! it was decent and tense, making it a fun challenge when you and a friend are in an arena, too afraid to comit, it was like fun mind games that I personally found satisfying and fun.
This one is actually a good bit better than part 1. Yeah, like I said before, it copy's Spoony's format a little bit, but aside from the one lifted joke, it's far from egregious, and the analysis is pretty succinct. The way you're breaking up the analysis is pretty sharp as well. Good on ya.
I agree that the 9 playable characters was overkill. It should just have been the main 3 hedgehogs only. This would have allowed them to flesh out and fix their broken gameplay and make them more fun to play. Why bother with the Amigo characters when they have such a small role in the game as it is? I still enjoy this piece of crap for what it is but god damn... FUCKING SONIC 06!!!.....Sorry.....sorry...
IKR. I really feel for the developers. They had to program so much into this game on a really tight schedule; with half of the development team working on a different game (Sonic and the Secret Rings). Ironically, Sonic 06 wasn't even the last game that came out that year (Sonic Rivals). Sega really messed up that year.
Hey Clement, I just thought, if you also count the final story where Sonic, Shadow and Silver are in their super forms, that's 17 gameplay mechanics (Well, 19 if you count it for all 3 characters)
That multiplayer co-op mode sounds like an awesome idea. it would be nice if it was fleshed out in a sonic heroes like game. It could even have interchangeable team members to have different skills (sonic advance 3) and dialog (sonic chronicles). One can only dream.
I could think of only one game with over 9 gameplay mechanics that went well..... Spyro 3 Year of the Dragon for the Playstation 1. But though yeah I think that worked because Insomniac IMO is a lot more flexible compared to Sonic Team when it comes to this kind of stuff.(And honestly this game was rushed so that could also be one of the main points why it went so terribly other then it's a badly designed game.)
Technically Kameo: Elements of Power has a ton of gameplay styles as well if you wanna count the different forms and that game works pretty well from what I've seen. There's also ZX: Advent with A-Trans transformations and Biometal transformations and that game also works pretty well. So yeah, I think it was just Sonic Team (and by extension SEGA cause they forced them to rush the game for a holiday release) being incompetent.
Lol. I remember renting that Finding Nemo game for the Gamecube, and I remember that game taking FOREVER to load! I thought it was just the copy of the game I rented at first.
For me the funnest part about sitting through the load screen you put up for us Clement was the background noise of my brother playing Assassin's Creed n_n
You were actually quite good willing to play the game, I saw only playthrough of this game and hated it; it's a pity Sonic reached such a low level, it's basically an alpha.
5:14 Actually, it's 17 gameplay styles, since the Super Sonic final boss has a different control scheme. Heck, if you count those instances in which you control the Egg Cerberus and Egg Wyvern, that's 19 gameplay styles...
Don't forget the final boss! That's a different gameplay style (3 if you count the differences between the super hedgehogs), and the fact that, like always, they planned to put Super Sonic into normal gameplay. And all the unused data that suggests that knuckles was supposed to have more stages (he had unused data for clearing a stage on his own), or the unused text that says you can play additional missions and levels for amy, rouge, knuckles, omega, tails, blaze and METAL SONIC. And the extra text in the rom that implies that there were supposed to be missions ala the sonic adventure series. Jesus fuck, I really don't know what sega was thinking when it planned all that, told the game designers to put it all in before christmas, and then fired every playtester who told them the end result was shit.@_@
I don't think they said "Hey, let's have 16 different gameplay modes". I think it was like "Let's have these 4 different gameplay modes" and then they started adding more and more because the boss felt inspired and nobody could tell him "no, that's a bad idea".
Matthew Rubenstein The problem is, those devs cared enough to put effort on the game. Sonic Team's last game with some level of effort before 06 was the ADV Series.
ClementJ64, I just want to say, I am loving your review of Sonic 06! I have never played it but my buddy told me that it was terrible and such a waste. Listening to your commentary on this game is cracking me up! Thank you for such an excellent review of such a terrible game!
This game was just awful. There was no way around it. The only thing good that came out of this was the song that played during the snowing boarding level.
+mathphysicsnerd All the characters have relatively stupid names. "We have this super fast hedgehog that runs at Sonic speed....what should we call him?" "Sonic." "GENIUS!" I love the Sonic franchise...hate Sonic 06, but you can say Silver's name is stupid without saying all of them are stupid.
I remember at Sonic Boom I wore the shirt and hat from last year and happened to be wearing sunglasses and everyone thought I was cosplaying as Sonicman. LOL
