If you remember during the walk around of the RD4 that I rescued, I mentioned I would love to find a LeTourneau D carryall to hitch to it since it has a LeTourneau PCU on the back of it. Well I found one and it wasn't even to far away from home, so in this video my dad and I go for a road trip to get it hauled home. I hope you enjoy, please don't forget if you like the video to give it a thumbs up and don't forget to subscribe. Thanks for watching, see you on the next one.

There's worse places to get stuck, ha ha. You can just walk into the house and warm up. Good job Jr and Sr!

For heavy stufff, chains don't keep the item in place as much as they just ensure that the trailer follows the load no matter where it's going, especially if it's going tits-up off the rails and into the dirt. When something goes so wrong on a big load that the chains need to work hard, no trailer and no chains can stop the load from following the trajectory that the nature of the accident has already put it on. A good tie-down job then ensures that the trailer ends up on top of the load on the side of the road.

I would love to have found a model D. I got a model M a couple of years ago, big for my TD9 but hope to pull it with my RD6 some day. It seems hard to find small cable scrapers as it seems most have been converted to hydraulic. Big cable scrapers are quite common but once over 8 1/2 feet wide oversized permit is needed and it gets a lot more expensive to move. I’ll be watching for it some more. 👍
@ironman3406
@ironman3406 Год назад
Hey there sir, cable scrapers in general are hard to find here. Big ones and little ones alike, to many farmers over the years have bought them and converted them to hydraulic. When I found this D it was pretty much ad immediate deal. The same guy also had 2 M's a B, and 2 F's that were still cable. One of my good friends took an M and the B. The B is really old, early 30's, and very uncommon to see LeTouneau stuff up here of that vintage. I really have to get working on my RD4 now. Need to find some parts for my PCU too, but there will absolutely be more videos about this pair. Thanks for watching!

This video caught my eye. I have a Model D LeTourneau. It's not in pristine shape. I've had it for maybe thirty years and have never used it for lack of anything to pull it. It's main claim to fame is that it was built in Australia and somehow made it to this side of the pond.

@@ironman3406 Things are not in the cards for that. That is best left to someone else. I have a LS that I use behind my 2U. It works well in tight areas. If I ever find a 20 ply 21,00-24, I'd like to get my #80 can working again. Cats with cans may be slow, kinda, but can load, move, place, compact, and grade all with just one person.
@ironman3406
@ironman3406 Год назад
@@davidsellars646 you got that right - have you seen the video of our 2U hooked to a Vickers onions pan?
@davidsellars646
@davidsellars646 Год назад
@@ironman3406 Just watched that video. It operates much like a LeTourneau. Someone commented that a #80 would be quite a load for a 2u. The first series of 80's were designed for the 2u. At the time, the 2u was the biggest thing Cat made as the D9 was still on the drawing board. Cat also had a cable ripper designed for the 2u. This was at the time when Cat and LeTourneau were splitting the sheets. I'm sure that your grand dad has more years on a can than I do but I'd like to suggest that as you get ready to load that you lift the apron 4-6 inches. As you start loading, throw the lever over to freespool and let the apron ride on the dirt and regulate the cut. As you finish the cut, lift the bowl and the apron will close all the way. Remember that about one-third of the load is on the apron. The first grader that I ran was a Wabco with a 6-71. Noisy but worked well.

Thank Nate for your time and tell Senior thanks for the video and commentary 😁👍 Nice Letourneau. I want one now but I don't have anything to tow it with .... yet.😁👍 I've been eyeballing a D6 cable op down the road for a bit now. Next time I get that way I'll look closer. There is also a cable op scraper Cat No.80🤔in Seward, ~500-600mi round trip. You know you could have left the snow part completely out.

Hey buddy - if it was used, it was lightly used it’s pretty straight and true. TC-12 would be big it’s only a 4 yard scraper lol, thus the RD4 and cause it has the proper PCU on it. Thanks for watching pal!

You trip reminds me of an after Christmas return trip from Clearwater FL to Rapid City SD. 2300 miles one way, we left early because a big storm was coming. We got to Wall, SD and the snow started to fall. The last 20 miles we ran in rim deep snow to Ellsworth AFB. We sure were glad to get home. It snowed so much it closed the base for 2 days. That's a nice little scraper, it will look good behind your cat. I used to work with a descendant of the LeTourneau family at a Cat dealer in Tampa FL. Cheers Terry

I believe I know where that was. There was a (I'm pretty sure) a LeTourneau dealer on 56th Street, just north of Hillsborough Avenue in Tampa. I grew up on 48th Street and went to King High, at 56th and Sligh Avenue, and would walk near that dealer on the way to school. At about 17-18 years old, I thought it would be cool to be a bulldozer operator and tried to get a summer job there. Nope. "Not hiring, kid." About a half-mile south of there, at 56th and Harney Road, is the Tampa Area Electrical JATC where I ended up serving a 5-year apprenticeship. It really is a small world.

@@imdeplorable2241 Dick LeTourneau worked as a welder at Rozier Machinery along with myself and many others. This was the 78-80 years that I was there. He was a top notch welder and I learned a lot from him. I helped Charlie Lane set up the machine shop there. I loved the Cat family but the 88 mile round trip from South St. Petersburg got old and expensive. Family issues also played a part in my leaving. It was a tough decision. Cheers Terry
