Lets Talk Cars - Land Rover Security Updates 

Nice work Richard - appreciate everything that you continue to do. For 2018 and prior, however, in my experience fitting a ghost is the only way to go - handing out faraday pouches is a cheap JLR PR gimic. The guys that took my 2016 Autobiography removed the driver window with a crowbar and used a portable angle grinder to remove the steering wheel lock - key was in a faraday box, and they deactivated the tracker. Given the amount of damage they caused to the car and their determination to take it, I would assume it was taken for parts. Police closed the crime report in less than 24hours. Wish everyone good luck, best car I ever had, but if they want to nick it, they will.

Maybe an idea for jlr to reduce the cost of their tracker subscription

Well done on all your hard work on this security & insurance issues with JLR ranger rovers. You seem to be the only one who keeps everyone updated and informed of what is going on. Vehicles when stolen have in the most left the uk via a port. By ferry, or in a container. But the biggest problem with it no one has done anything about it. The ports are not held accountable for stolen vehicles going on ferries, and the container ports never held accountable for letting the thieves load them into containers. The insurance companies should telling them increase security with the likes of anpr or face higher insurance policies. This may cut down the amo7nt of vehicles stolen and leaving the uk via a port.

Hi Richard, can't thank you enough for the work you have done on our behalfs and Darren Mills is calling me on Monday to discuss car/home insurance bundles. My big bugbear is still the fact the despite JLR's pontificating about the work they are doing and money being spent in this matter, my 2019 RRS has depreciated £15k+ in less than 12 months and the insurance companies in the main, still wont touch us. This to me is descrimination, and yet JLR allow it to continue. Seems to me that in the world of JLR, £1million here and there is paying lip service to their clientel. Sorry for the rant.

What they don't mention is the problems caused by these software updates. 4 visits to the dealer for a total of 7 days for them to fix features that were broken by the software update on a 2018 Velar (e.g auto high beam, seat entry/exit mode)

We have heard no word about any update about our 2018 Velar 300. It was stolen last year, with keys being in a faraday box plus steering lock. I found it with a secret Samsung air tag I hid in the body work, insurance Aviva practically rebuilt the car with no mention to us how much they spend rebuilding it, of of course 6 months later was impossible to insure. My wife some how managed to find a way to insure it for 3600 a year. After it was stolen we installed a Ghost 2 immobiliser which I was surprised isn’t recognised by the insurers? apparently its one of the savest type of security and only way they could steel it is with a pick up truck. I hope prices do come down for the insurance on these cars if number are down 60% from last year!

2024 RRS best quote was £1800 - LV replied that they don't insure these vehicles. I ended up buying a 2024 Defender 110 PHEV which came out at £520 with Admiral. My postcode is SN area.

These security updates are also affecting newer cars. My 2023 Discovery had a security campaign against it, done by Land Rover Assist (AA). Interestingly I also got a letter from my insurer detailing JLR security updates, although it also said getting them done doesn't change your premium!

Hi Richard well more problems with my 2018 range rover velar 300d hse, engine management light on put my obd reader on the car turbo over boost cleared fault and hope for the best so I can use my car because when i tried to book it in at land rover knutsford it's over 5 weeks to get it in also asked about update on BCM and the booking in at land rover said ask the deal but last time it was in they said nothing on the system with land rover so I think it will just be the same I'm thinking of selling it i also pay £1200+a year for warranty because I have no confidence in the car. I am a 50 year served retired mechanic

It seems the insurance industry is treating all Range Rovers the same, regardless of their age. I have a 1989 Range Rover Classic that last year cost £310 for fully comp. This year I got a renewal quote of £2440. I contacted them and tried to explained that my car is thirty five years old and doesn't have any modern tech like keyless entry and is therefore no more of a risk than any other old Land Rover, but unfortunately all I got was "the computer says no". I got the same response from several companies until I eventually found a classic car specialist who would do me a reasonable price, but only after I agreed to keep the car garaged at night.

AA supporting security updates. Had my 2019 Disco 5 this week by the AA on behalf of JLR. However also had my insurance renewal with admiral. JLR tracker solution worthess as Admiral premium unchanged by having it so let it lapse as jlr wanted c300 quid for a year. However premium also unchanged by security update...

So for 2016 vehicles they will supply a Faraday shield key pouch! Already keep my spare key wrapped in Aluminium foil and the main key in a metal sweet tin.

Just had my insurance come through from "Darren" and it turns out far more expensive than what I got when I surfed for it myself.

I need to be careful on this topic but I was talking with an old friend that works in insurance. He was gleeful at the huge profits they are making … literally billions. And he mentioned the profits started ramping up …..last year. 🤔

Hi.. Velar owner, I asked my insurer (Ad....) what the reduction in premiums would be if I activated the fitted tracker, there response was ...no reduction.😢

Just insured my Velar D300 with Admiral Gold cover for £540.

Have seen a guy advertising on Facebook this week claiming to have cracked the latest security updates and able to programme new keys. This was something the update was thought to prevent .

I’ve booked mine in for the 2nd update which states only takes 30 minutes, however they are wanting the car for half a day and can’t get it booked in until November. Unless I book it in for its service and can do both together.

Thanks Richard for keeping us informed on this with JLR, I have a 17 plate so maybe it will be done in the future. We have a evoque on a 19 plate that my daughter has had for 18 months and the screen now leaks as the rubber is coming away from the metal, the windscreen companies tell me it’s an on going problem with these cars and having spoken to JLR main dealers there not prepared to do anything about this, any thoughts? Having the update makes no difference to the insurance premium. It’s pointless focussing on the updates. Insurance companies will continue to gouge over this issue because they can’t get away with it.

We have a 2021 Evoque p300e and 2021 F-Pace SVR, both insurance's circa £650 via DLine. Recently enquired about a 2023 Velar = £1100, so not going there!

As soon as one insurance company starts issuing realistic quotes then it will gloves off to the bottom line 😊

My friend has just purchased a brand new Range Rover HSE LWB Diesel at £125,000 he lives in a rural area near Bristol & his insurance quote was £8000 but eventually through Hastings paid £5000. I’ve just been quoted for a 2023 sport P460E autobiography priced at £91,000 £1060 same area, we both have full no claims. What’s your thought on the price differential? Is it that the value of the new Range Rover is over the £100,000 threshold & if so should it increase the premium by that much or some other factor?
