Here's how to replace the Differential fluid, Coolant and Spark Plugs on a Lexus GS350 and IS250 and IS350.
This is an ASMR style video where you can watch and listen to me work!
Differential fluid is accessed with a fill and drain port on the passenger side of the unit. Using 10 mm hex, the fill port is first opened and then the drain port to remove fluid. Once the magnets are cleaned, the drain plug is reinstalled. A fluid pump is used to pump 2L of 75W90 gear oil into the fill port of the differential until it starts dripping out. Tighten the plugs and clean excess oil.
The coolant can be changed by draining and filling the radiator and overflow reservoir. The reservoir should be unbolted and washed out to remove settled debris. The radiator petcock valve is located on the bottom and can be reached from inside the engine bay, in front of the engine, opposite the crankshaft pulley. There's already a hole in the plastic cover below so there's no need to go underneath the vehicle. Use a Toyota pink compatible fluid that is borate and silicate free. Draining the engine block and heater core is optional for full coolant replacement. Bleed the cooling system with the radiator cap off and warm up the engine to allow air to burp out the top.
Replacing spark plugs is much easier on this RWD longitudinally mounted 2GR engine, compared to its FWD counterparts, since the intake does not need to be removed. The wiring harness needs to be freed and then the ignition coils carefully removed. On the passenger side the intake tube is removed to access coils and plugs. The spark plug torque is 16 ft-lb with no anti-seize on the threads. Use Denso Iridium spark plugs since it is OEM and best for this engine. This is also a good time to change the air filter and clean the throttle body. Throttle response has definitely improved after this service.

His coolant looked pretty clean. But if you want to do your own coolant change. Empty from the radiator. Then replace it with distilled water. Drive around. Let the car get to operator temperator so the coolant from the engine is cycled through. Then go and drain the radiator again. It'll be hot. And of course don't open the radiator cap lol. And just keep repeating this until the fluid is mostly clear. Finally try to find out online how much the radiator holds and the engine block. In the case of my Lexus it's close to a 50/50 capacity. So I added concentrated oem coolant to my radiator. Then drove around. Let the concentrated coolant mix with the distilled water in the engine and viola. A 50/50 mix.

The differential oil seemed OK. Man those spark plug coils are annoying to remove 🙂 I wonder how many tooth brushes from past repairs are hidden in the crevices of your engine compartment 🤣

You're tightening the diff plugs way too much, isn't their a crush washer? Also you need a sparkplug socket so you don't have to drop the plugs in, not good. Oh good their working next door again...lol
@speedkar99
@speedkar99 Год назад
In my experience (especially with these same plugs on transmission pans) these have to be torqued much more than the 36 ft lb or so that they're specified or they will leak. And yes sorry for the noise next door.
@ginog5037
@ginog5037 Год назад
@speedkar99 Try adding a crush washer(copper or aluminum) 36lb is more than enough. Also pickup a new sparkplug socket at Crappie Tire...

I agree, it looked really good for its age. According to the previous Lexus service records the coolant and differential wasn't changed for 8 years and 80,000km and the spark plugs for 100,000km so it was due by time.

Speedkar, do you think it's necessary to bring a lexus to a mechanic who specializes in toyota/lexus or do you think any good mechanic can work on a lexus. I own a 2014 lexus is350 but I can't find any toyota/lexus independent techs near me. There is a shop near me that has very good reviews and word of mouth is he is a very good asian import mechanic, but he used to be an acura master tech.
@speedkar99
@speedkar99 Год назад
Most mechanics can work on Lexus until it comes to hardcore diagnosis or deep engine/ transmission / electrical/ diagnostic work. Then you'll need a specialist.

@@speedkar99 this applies for damn near every car, idk why people buy these luxury cars and all of a sudden they think they have special bolts that fell down from heaven in them lol I'd say go to a mechanic thats knowledgeable and takes pride in his work before you go out lookin for specialists.
