Leyla Latypova - Russia's War has Taken a Much Higher Toll on Minorities than Ethnic Russians

Instead of what he thought would be a ‘short victorious war’, Putin has mired Russia in a protracted and costly struggle that may not only end Putin’s tenure in the Kremlin, but also threaten the integrity of the Russian Federation itself. The stakes could not be higher, and history shows that change in Russia moves like tectonic plates - nothing for decades, and then pent up forces are released in violent, dramatic and unpredictable changes. Some academics and politicians are starting to think the unthinkable and are urging us make plans to de-colonise Russia when the last continental European empire collapses. History may show that the disintegration of the USSR was not avoided, merely postponed.

Leyla Latypova and Jonathan, thank you for sharing an informative, thought-provoking and for me educative conversation with us. I hope to see Leyla return to Silicon Curtain at some point in the future. From Scandinavia, my wishes and support for all ethnic minorities in russia who wish freedom from the shackles of Muscovy, and to all who support Ukraine and their defense against the brutal imperialistic invasion and war of conquest. "Britain had an empire: Russia is an empire" - Geoffrey Hosking. Russia is not a federation but an empire. In many ways the Russian empire resembles the Austro-Hungarian Empire - multi-ethnic, multi-lingual, with implied hierarchic superiority of Austrian and Hungarian ethnicity superseding that of the peripheral ethnicities. How long can this inequality last? it was Serbian nationalism that put the skids under the Austro-Hungarian empire and it was extinguished in 1918. Today, there is little trace of that empire. What will happen to the Russian empire I wonder?

There is no single square meter of historical Russia (839-1434) anywhere in Muscovy (1502-1917) that emerged from the Horde (1243-1502) and thus was not an European empire such as the British, German or Austrian ones. Russia was not an empire either, just a medieval kingdom.

@richardcory5024
@richardcory5024 2 месяца назад
@@gmw3083 There is no Anglo-American empire. The British (Anglo) Empire was a maritime empire, created for the purposes of trade. The Russian, Chinese, Persian, Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman Empires are or were land empires for whom conquest, territorial expansion and land borders were a high priority. Russia is in a permanent phase of expansion or desiring to expand when having contracted. This is not the case with the USA which does not have an empire, but it does have the world's most powerful navy which puts it more in the category of the British Empire. The US is not an empire itself, but a country at the hub of a world wide network of alliances. Russia's future is highly uncertain given its substantial downward economic, political, social, civic, and financial trajectory, likely to be permanent. Fragmentation and dissolution along the lines of the Austro-Hungarian empire, similarly a multi-ethnic empire ruled from two capitals (Vienna and Budapest like Moscow and St. Petersburg) is more likely than not, in the next decade or two.

The speaker mentions limestone as an important raw material. It is more important than she may have suggested. It is, together with clay, the essential component of concrete. It is also important in removing acid pollution from power station emissions, though I doubt if Putin's Russia puts much store by ensuring high levels of air quality. Agriculture is another user.

excellent interview, thanks Jonathan. I've been following this aspect of mobilising citizens by stealth, and -krmln perceived - degree of disposability. The level of poverty and desperation dealt out according to ethnicity and region is a very valuable tool in maintaining divisions and racial tension. I get so annoyed when I see jokes and memes (made by non Ukrainians, from conflict free countries) about the fate of these people on the front lines, and their families back home. It should be a humbling example of inequality, and a motivator to look at our own societies. We're all an🍊dictator away from the enforcement of these extreme divisions, and further regression.

When comes to trying to blame ethnic minorities for brutality and war crimes, I can tell that especially Mongolians are actually nice and friendly people these days. In spite being under strong influence of the Chinese, their country is surprisingly liberal and the leaders truly care about their people. What I've seen and read so far points at a rather harmonic society, where the root for this 'harmony' is not enforced from the top (like in China) but is coming from the people itself.

Well, that depends on whether you allow people to self-report their ethnicity. People have frequently lost their relationship with their own language and culture and now self-report as ethnic Russians. That's what happens when one regime after another reports millions of people from their traditional homes to other places repeatedly to cause people to lose a sense of their identity. This is what Russia is: a cultural genocide on an unimaginable scale. In a 1914 (approx) survey ethnic Russians made up less than 20% of the population of Russia. Today, 80% of Russia's population is claimed to be ethnic Russians. That's how messed up Russia is. Where did those people go? They list their roots. Those that fought against it were killed or sent to war or sent to gulags, etc

The problem with a section of the left is that everything is coloured by a hatred of the West - essentially their own culture. This completely cancels out any kind of objectivity, so that even a fascist/gangster regime like Putin's escapes any kind of scrutiny. On the other hand sections of the right, so exercised with culture war issues are fooled into thinking Putin represents their values. Each is as bad as the other in their own way.

Isn't it soon time we admitted capitalism plays a part in the functioning of this war? I mean the abuses of capitalism, not necessarily capitalism as an idea on paper, because all ideas on paper have idealistic aims, in reality the form in which what is on paper turns out can be very far removed from the idea of a freedom and democracy being inherent traits of private control of the means of economic production? In the period around the Second War, a young Margaret Thatcher was deeply inspired by the book ''the Road to Serfdom'' by F. A. Hayek. In it, the Austrian economist warned of central government power in economic matters. However, the very act of harsh privatisation since the 1990s, hasn't let to less government power in economic matters, but the exact opposite of what she said her type of politics tried to get at - since the high level of privatisation has only been bolstered by a more authoritarin type of government support of it - whether it be the way that many Americans got no say in the 2011 bail-out plan of tax payer money to Wall St - or the way Russians got no say in the very government's use of corrupt oligarchs as easier to get closer to it than not.
@linmal2242

Well, what Hayek, and Rand and Thatcher and other 'free marketeers' advocate is not what we got. What we now have is 'Corporatism' a form of control not too different from Socialism/Communism but with a little more restraint imposed on the 'elites', Company Directors, Bosses, Loud Entrepreneurs imposed on them by the Stock Markets Rules, and less by 'market forces' . How do company meetings and managements differ from 'workers councils' , Cominterns, etcetera ? Fast economic punishment via the 'Market Forces' presumably. Really?

@@Tuzganaq Thank you for the correction I had seen it spelled the other way since I been a child. Since I have difficulty with my eyesight due to old age and especially on these phone, I don't always pick up that I haven't been using the wrong spelling. I enjoy Eli in Russia who happens to be a proud Tatar. I had known some of the Chechen people were red haired light (almost reddish) skin but so many people in her family's area were reddish skin (lots of freckles) and red hair. The points I tried to make in my post was not to impugn Asian tribal of Russia but to point out invalid talking points. Anybody reading my post knows I don't like Putin (Russia), Stalin (Georgian), Kadyrov (Chechen), Xi (Chinese) and Biden (Irish-American), I don't know anything about a recent or current "Mongolian" dictator. However I have a great amount of respect for Georgian, Ukrainian, Russian, Finnish, Chinese, Chechen, Mongolian, Tatar, Indian and Irish-American people along with their culture and history along with many others. Along with that respect is also respect for the truth. The "Woke" narrative disrespects all of that because it pushes a lie. As I said before I think tribal people should accept the term "indigenous" because it really doesn't apply to them whether Sioux, Algonquin, Cherokee, Sami, Tatar, Russian, Slav. Georgian, Mongols, Chechen, Germanic or Irish. Even Homo erectus and Neanderthals, who mostly moved from somewhere else are indigenous. The Aryans evolved in the Caucasus. Mountains. That does NOT mean Tatarstan isn't home of Tatars. Of course Tatarstan is home of Tatars. Many other nations are home to different Tatars groups and some share those lands with different tribal groups. I live by, if not along the "Trail of Tears" land dispute and sometimes shared by Cherokee and other tribal people in what is now United States. Should I be considered "indigenous" were the Cherokee descended from the Clovis culture? Not necessarily. To say someone is indigenous is to imply your ancestry, or at least some of your ancestry, evolved in that area. There is little, if any chance, of that being true. So "indigenous" is being used as a "political" term to divide the people in the area. In "Woke" philosophy "white" man bad so a "Woke" leader sees he can gain power by attacking "White" men. Prior to 1970 the Democrat power brokers saw they could gain power attacking "Black" people only to switch to attacking "Whites" in 2008 in USA. Putin's sees he can gain more power from attacking "non-ethnic" Russian while claiming ethnic Russians are being threatened. The "Woke" agenda is helping Putin stay in power.

@williamblansett5786 Don't be fooled by Eli from Russia. She's very affiliated with the channel RT, and thus, she spread russian propaganda (just a "softer" version of it) and works against us Tatars (this is why we consider her a Mankurt). You can't be a "proud Tatar" and at the same time work for the enemy/coloniser, that's an oxymoron. So please, if you're truly an ally with us, don't follow Eli from Russia anymore. She deserves to be cancelled. Anyone who promotes russian propaganda, even the slightest, should be cancelled. Not all of us Tatars look like her, by the way. Yes, some light-skinned red-haired Tatars do exist, but so do light-skinned red-haired Arabs as well. My appearance isn't the same as Eli's. I have much more melanin (and in russian culture, that is seen as a disgrace). Not all, but many Tatars look like me. Appearance-wise, when people don't know my ethnicity, I'm often mistaken by them as a mestiza from Peru or as a hazara from Afghanistan. I automatically stand out appearance-wise among white people, and I have often been ashamed of it (but not anymore, since there's nothing wrong with any skin colour, hair colour, eye colour etc at all). The problem, as I see it, is not just Putin, but russia, russians, and russian culture at all. It's not enough to just be against Putin.

They have moved around people over there so much that the people themselves don't probably know their origin. Like now the majority living in my homeland Karelia are from Ukraine and Belarus thinking they are Russians... Like Kola, Karelia and Ingria need to be returned. Yes the peopl not belonging there have to move, like you didn't ask my grandmother if she wanted to flee in just her clothes on her back so at least I would give you the chance to pack your things and leave.

The lady in the video is lying through her teeth! I am from Bashkortostan, and all the Bashkort people are in the National Parliament called Kurultai. They speak their native language, they practice their native culture, they read their native prose. In fact, there are 2 required classes in the Russian schools: The History of Bashkortostan and the Culture of Bashkortostan. People of other nationalities are invited to learn Bashkort or Tatar if they wish. I never had the time to study Bashkort, but I took traditional Bashkort dance as an elective. The lady in the video is lying and complaining about the situation in Bashkortostan, but what alternative does she offer? Would she like to move Bashkorts to the reservations, as they did it in the US? Or would she like (God forbid) to get rid of them entirely as the British did to the Aborigines in Australia? The man who is encouraging her is a Brit - not a very good source to ask advice from when it comes to the native populations. The genocidal British Empire has gotten rid of entire native populations in its quest for money, power and more lands! Isn't it what it is trying to do now in my native Bashkortostan?

Listen instead of trying to drown her out by screaming "Liar" and choosing to remain ignorant. Drowning others out doesn't work as a comment to the video and only makes you look stupid. Leyla spoke about the parliament, the fact that they speak their native language etc, but points out that they cannot become prosperous by doing so - that requires them not only to speak Russian but even to do so without any accent.

@uglaegil...is lying his t1ts off. The Australian Aboriginal race is thriving in Australia with many of them thrilled with their various percentages of white blood, which they never mention of. Many are more well off than me. There are a lot of whingers though. Not enough of them appreciate the fact that if it wasn't for the white settlers they would not have been privy to the Gospel. ❤🙏❤️

The entire area, yes the entire area of today's Russia was once Ural Altaic land with at most 1 Slavic person that got lost hunting. They have been replacing the native cultures and languages since the day the first Slavic person came there. After the Mongol Horde they really started to push for removing the other cultures&languages and it still continues today. Like yes we can put some on history that this is how history happened in many parts but for what has been going on for the last 100 years can not be put on history because you whine like little girls about Hitler but you aid Stalin because he used death work camp instead of just death camps.... You others have been accepting the Slavs exterminating the Uralic group, the Altaic side is pretty strong still but just because Scottish and English are germanic they aint the same or Danes compared to Norwegians so my point is that culture is getting erased in our modern world and you react now that its Slavic people trying to take other Slavic people. Better late than never but don't think its a new thing because you can read on the internet even about groups trying to reach out and there is even a documentary of one culture that will die during my lifetime because they are so few left. Ukraine can hold on for years upon years against the Kremlin but the minorities are sent to the slaughter to Ukraine so we should fix the issue at the root of the problem and not try to help Ukraine be the meatgrinder for the minorities. Yes I am saying that we should go in and stop the Kremlin brainwash to save the last ones, yes they will be so confused that they probably think we are the evil ones but if we don't act now then there will not be any cultures to save in 100 years when maybe the Slavic Russian's manages to stop their urge to exterminate others and make up their own version of history. Just today I argued with one that really thinks that the Russian Empire saved Finland from Sweden cruelty, when reality is that Sweden did more good than bad over here even if they were the "rich/nobles". Russia again tried to remove our culture and language but that was probably to protect us and not because they wanted us gone... Still that person was so sure about them being the saviours of Finland, like why did they steal Karelia if we saw them as saviours, how do their brains compute. What about the Ingrians and all the other Finno Ugric tribes around the Muscovy/St. Peterburg area, saved from their culture and language?!? All the Uralic languages and cultures from the Baltic seas to the Pacific, also saved from themselves or was the polar bears going to invade from the north so they need to convert to Slavic to be safe?!? The insanity among the Russians still surprises me today and I have been arguing with em for 25+ years of my life.
