Personally, I think It would have been nice to see Dubas have another crack at it with a new team system. I said this on your previous video, and I'll say it again: Keefe needs to spread out the talent. Move Nylander or Marner to the 3rd line. Spread out your star players and see if they can elevate the play of the underperforming guys. If that fails miserably, then who cares? It isnt going much better now.
@stangsswang8355
@stangsswang8355 8 месяцев назад
yep,,,,,,and it shouldve started 2/3 years ago,,,,,mathews,,marner and nylander should all be able to drive their own lines
@whoopass2rb
@whoopass2rb 8 месяцев назад
I've said it for years. When you make over 10 million, you need to be driving an individual line. In this regard, they should have Matthews, Marner and Tavares on separate lines. The problem is that can never happen because of how they play. You don't have any other good shooters aside from Matthews and Tavares to put Marner with. Who do you put him with that he elevates? Based on the list today, your best bet is Knies and then Nylander ends up with one of Mathews or Tavares. So let's assume those two things are true. You're asking 1 of JT or AM do basically have 2 underperforming nobodies on their line, who generally don't make their jobs easier. Great. It really doesn't work and depends on Knies stepping up, which he has to at this point or the leafs are screwed. This team has the wrong type of players playing around each other all the time and the chemistry is just off. CJ plays on the 1st line with AM and MM, simply because they have no one better that's also reliable for the competition they face. But CJ is a bang and crash dude with speed. He's at best a 3rd line player on a good team and probably fits the style of a 4 line based on his desire to cycle the puck. CJ would work better with JT and MM at that rate because those players would handle better off cycle play. But when you have MM and AM, they aren't cycling so much as finding open space and attacking off broken plays - that's their talent kicking in. And that talent looks way out of place when you throw CJ in there with them. It's honestly just, wow. I actually don't know how you get blood from a stone here without hiring someone like Torts. And no, the Leafs shouldn't hire Torts lol. Like I just tried to divvy up the talent and make some mock lines and this was the best I could come up with that's different with a justified purpose / view of their play. Worst part is it doesn't feel great, it just feels different. I'm actually surprised we haven't got to this arrangement yet given how much Keefe likes to go to the blender. Knies - Matthews - Domi Gregor -Tavares - Marner Bertuzzi - Holmberg - Nylander Jarnkroc - Kampf - Reeves The idea being that KMD line will like to play off the rush and have a power forward, a shooter and then a play maker with them to make that happen. The GTM line has two guys that like to cycle off the half wall to get into the slot between MM and JT; then Gregor gives you speed and a dog on the puck type of thing (Hyman like). So dump and chase if the D stand up at the line, Gregor gets it for M or JT, and they work their magic. If opposition doesn't stand up at the line, JT or MM just waltz in and do their thing. The BHN line is really just trying to get something with magic hands Nylander at this point. The reality of that line: Bert on the 4th line is worse than CJ on the 4th so that's why he's on the 3rd line (which is really bad). Like I don't know wtf you do here with these arrangements? And at this point I think we're ready to accept seeing Holmberg at 3C, so just do it. Then your 4th line is what it is, and you can have situations where CJ players with JT and MM in place of Gregor to manage minutes. But like, I have no idea how many goals the "bottom six" get here. Hell I don't know how anyone other than the core 4 produce here. This team just doesn't have players who want it bad enough to make it look like they are worth being here. Boston's defense had 3 AHL players and they contained the Leafs fairly well. Sure they had some panic moments, but that's expected. The fact their goaltending bailed them out, AND their team was able to be competitive throughout from all lines - like that's the missing piece here. No one, other than the core 4 + Rielly, seems to have it in their head they need to give more. Everything else at this point is just lip service.

I know I'm becoming the Woll fangirl in these comments but you gotta feel for the guy. When your defense is this bad is doesn't matter if you're Martin Brodeur, you're going to let goals in. And while Woll is no Brodeur he absolutely put his heart into tonight's performance, made some incredible calm and collected saves under pressure from breakaways and failed defense and at every turn he was let down. This game is a perfect microcosm of everything wrong with the leafs. They are a high scoring potential team but they lack depth so spectacularly that teams that should be losing to them are able to creep ahead with even a minimal amount of depth. The leafs have 1 line that works. If your team even has 2 that can score you can beat the leafs. And other teams know it. They see the weakness in the other lines and pounce. It's genuinely pathetic.

To be fair this Summer most of the signings seemed to be good pick ups. I thought Bertuzzi was a good signing, I really liked him on the various times I watched the Red Wings over the last 2 years and he was a solid add for Boston. I was less sold on Domi, but that's because I hadn't watched enough of him in Chicago, but he had put up consistent point totals over the last couple of years. Reaves was flat out a bad signing but he's going to be playing a healthy scratch and playing bottom line minutes so meh whatever I can live with it. I could not understand why the rest of Leafs nation creamed their pants because he's a tough guy. For me, the worst signing was Klingberg because he was going to cost the Leafs a lot of games. I watch Minnesota, and last season Klingberg was a disaster on defense, his offense was non existent, and his only good attribute was ability to move the puck up the ice. I want to know how he convinced Brad Treeliving to give him 4 million dollars when his play was so poor.

I really don’t know why everyone outside our core 4 or 5 is just completely failing to perform at all. Brad has his work cut out for him. He knows what needs to be fixed, defence and goaltending. Along with that Keefe is running out of time, he’s on the hot seat of this rabid fanbase now.

@STNeish
@STNeish 8 месяцев назад
It's because, as Steve said, they're BAD. The problem is that this isn't a team, it's four guys. There IS no team, however, BECAUSE of those four guys. They demanded so much money from the team that they can't afford to put anyone decent on the ice. I've been saying this since the preseason. Those four guys had a choice. Even more millions (at the expense of all their teammates), or a run at a championship. We've seen what their priority is.

@@STNeish, have you seen what Marner wore prior to the game ? A silly hat and red pants and red suit jacket !! If these guys could put as much effort into winning games like they do being fashion conscious, they may still win something. As it stands, sure, the core four are doing all the scoring, but they were also too selfish when it came to personal contracts to worry about who else would back them up in the bottom six and defence. Nylander has made it pretty clear, it’s all about $$$ for him. He is just as good as gone after this season. Hope he goes to the Blackhawks as a free agent 🙏

What do you think about this idea: We dress Klingberg and Reaves up as cheerleaders and send them into the crowd to hand out free Leafs paraphernalia? Two more loses... the two of them can hand out free beer and brown paper bags. Domi and Bertuzzi get another month; then they get to become cheerleaders also. You have to know Sheldon Keefe should be getting ready for an extended paid holiday. Keefe had to put someone on the ice. This isn't his mess. Keefe's replacement is already on the MLSE payroll. Brad was trying to slide that one in subtly. The Leafs are now past being just temporarily discombobulated. The Leafs are absolutely dysfunctional now. Sheldon Keefe is going though an extended exit interview. A painfully slow one. I can't see how Keefe can keep his job with a bunch of lost and frequently uninspired bench warmers who don't listen to him. Keefe told us he was going to make the team focus on basic team defensive structure, simple responsible plays into the neutral zone, and then offensive zone puck control and movement. We can see that the players are not getting the message and it's not working clearly. It's sad.

@STNeish
@STNeish 8 месяцев назад
So, I haven't done one of these this year, but it seems I have to after tonight's debacle. So, let's look at the Leafs' "defense." First goal against, the Leafs are penalty killing. NO ONE is challenging anyone. They're in their little box, watching the opposition pass the puck around. Eventually, the shot comes from the top of the faceoff circle. Woll is screened, and trying to see around to the left. Shot goes to his right. I can't find fault with Woll on this, it was an amazing shot. He was playing the percentages while screened, that's really all he could do. With more net to his left, he had to peek that way. I'll let this one slide, even though the defense should probably have been more aggressive. Next goal, the Leafs are on the "power" play, passing the puck around over and over and over. Finally, the last man back (Marner) decides to try and be fancy with it, coughs it up, breakaway ensues. Woll makes the first save, but since Marner didn't continue to pressure his man, and instead skated into the middle of the net where he wasn't in position to do ANYTHING. The puck bobbles in, just bad luck. Nothing Woll could do, the forwards were caught screwing around with the puck. I've seen this over and over for so many years now, it's cost the Leafs whole series in the playoffs. It's what allowed Florida to beat them last year. Next goal, is a long pass through the whole Leafs team to a guy near the faceoff circle. He WIRES it into the top corner. Now... I could blame Woll for this one, but damn, it was a great shot. The real problem though, was the pass through everyone to an opponent BEHIND everyone. Where's the defensive awareness? NEXT goal, we have the Sabres skating around more or less unopposed in the Leafs' end. One guy chips it to the corner, two Leafs go there, the other two take positions in front of the net. The puck goes to the Sabre in the corner, who now skates toward the net, near the red line. ALL FIVE Leafs are on that side of the ice. He passes it through FOUR of the Leafs, to a man all alone in the middle of the ice. There's a second man right next to him, also wide open. The man in the middle shoots, and Woll stops it. ALL FIVE Leafs are now facing away from the two men who initiated the play, leaving BOTH of them completely undefended. The rebound goes past the Leafs' defender (Klingberg) and he stands there while the Sabres bang it in. The defense was HORRIBLE here, standing around doing nothing, and watching nobody. Next goal is a shot from the point, but the thing here is the play before it. The puck was behind the net, and came out along the boards. ONE Leaf pursued it, everyone else kind of stood around watching or backed off. So, Buffalo was free to pass it around unchallenged. The shot deflected in front, not much chance for Woll. This is ANOTHER goal resulting from soft, soft play, absolutely NO pressure on Buffalo at all. Last one is an empty netter, no blame on anyone, though the offense can't be coughing up the puck like that. There were a couple of flukey bounces in this one, but the Leafs were again caught watching the game instead of playing it. NO pressure on the opposition. NO defensive awareness. Too much focus on being fancy. Is this the future of the Leafs?

I'm impressed by this detailed analysis, but I gotta disagree on the empty netter. BLAME KLINGBERG, discount Erik Karlsson himself! It's 6 on 5 with over a min left, there's no need to rush. Keep passing it around until you get a good clean look. You're also on the ice with THREE 40 goal scorers and one of the league's best passers. WHY ON EARTH would you decide to just launch a soft slapper right into the defender's shins when you haven't scored all year?????

This Leafs team has become the Thornton era Sharks, elite in the regular season, playoff chokers, missing that little extra that makes a champion. The Sharks doubled, tripled, quadrupled down on a core that proved over and over and over again it couldn't work and look what it got them, one trip the finals where they got killed and now two 10 goals against losses back to back for the first time since 1965. That is your future, Toronto. This team will bounce back, they'll probably go on a run again, finish 2nd in the division, they might even win a playoff round again. But this team has shown you who they are. They can't and won't get it done.

I remember watching the Leafs win the Stanley Cup. It was wonderful to experience that I hope all Leaf fans get to experience. Maybe, one day, someone in charge will recognize that you cannot win with bad defense. You build a Stanley Cup winning team from the net out. Austin Mathews is incredible; I love watching him play. He is my favorite Leaf since Frank Mahovlich. It's a shame that he has to try to cover so much bad play by such a mediocre defense. Team defense is mediocre. Secondary scoring is absent. I'm pretty sure I'll be dead before the problems the Shanaplan caused get fixed, but I wish you all the best Stanley Cup celebration when that happens.

The Leafs won the last cup on D and Goaltending, and every GM after Punch Imlach has tried to reverse the potion and make it win. It doesn't. I've been saying this for years, unless the Leafs start building a Defense that defends, that they don't worry about 60 goal years, but instead hope a lot of guys get 20, they won't win with this. In the 60s they had Pulford, reliable 15-20 goal man and the perfect swiss army knife, Pappin, spotty but when on great, Armstrong one of the best leaders ever, Kelly, constant consistent two way forward, and they always had a crew of forwards from in the 1940s and the 1960s that could deliver enough points to win in the regular season, then go to a new level come playoff time. This team as none of it and it's frustrating to watch.

One, he has his health, a beautiful wife and son. Two, the Leaf's are a team in translation, It just took you and the fine people of Toronto to see that. They'll get rid of their General Manager, and countless others. Which and who I don't know. However, you will be a contender soon enough. I don't think you have to blow up the team, but you are going to have to get rid one or two of the core four. A retool can be accomplished in a single year. But it will take patience, and I'm not sure you have that. Three, you could be like me, on October 15, 2021, my life changed forever. All my hopes and dreams were put aside and I'll never know if they'll be realized, I had a stroke. Now, I'm a little bit older than you, 56 at that time. And I know it's a part of your personality to act the way you do. I derived particular enjoyment from the Zamboni driver episode. I watched it a few times in the hospital (66 days). This summer, I was contemplating changing "my team" to the Vegas Golden Knights. It's an organization that just seems to know how to win. While they haven't been around for long, their record is solid, their playoff performances are consistent and they've won a cup in short order. Unlike some teams, after winning a cup, they didn't tear everything down and suck for a few years while they rebuilt. They are still a very good team (currently still undefeated in regulation with a 11-0-1 record to start the season). The organization just "gets it" in terms of how to build a team. The players all seem like they care and want to win. When the Leafs changed the GM, I was hoping for change, and while I liked the players that were added, the team doesn't really seem any different. I knew once there was no movement from the "core" group, it wouldn't really make a difference. Vegas moved on from some really good players to get what they needed to fill holes and add depth. While they might have seemed to be a bit "ruthless", they want to win. I like that. So with all that, and how things have gone, my new favourite team is the Vegas Golden Knights. I'll still keep an eye on the Leafs and I'll still watch the LFRs, but I just can't care about this team when the players don't and the management doesn't seem to care about doing what is needed to win, period. I realize their options were limited due to the cap constraints and many decisions made by the previous GM, but Vegas seems to do things regardless, even if it means trading the Captain or making ruthless moves, all the name of winning.
