1st time I had my TV repaired it cost $250. I was determined to never go through it again. And this video made it happen. Thank you!

Great work! I actually saw three lights out but amazingly enough, no visible difference in picture quality. I'm looking forward to your next fix. I always learn alot from what you do in your shop. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge with us.

Thanks so much for the posting. Even though I found many other, I found your video first and because it looked complicated at first, I almost didn't do it. The TV was free, so I figured "why not?". I'm glade I did. Even if my repair doesn't end up lasting that long, I now know that it's not that hard for me to do. I'm better at this stuff than I give myself credit. It only took me 20 minutes to disassemble enough to get to the LED strips. I wanted to add a few comments that will hopefully be useful to someone else. First, in every video I've watched, the screen is taken out from the top. It's much easier to first remove the plastic face frame while the screen is vertical and the stand removed, lifting and rotating the entire TV as needed for access all the way around the frame. Then with the screen flat down on a surface big enough to, at least almost entirely support the LCD panel, remove the the top and bottom metal retainers, then the sides. That way, as long as you have the ribbon cables from the timing controller board disconnected at the LCD panel, you can carefully maneuver the thin board permanently attached to the LCD panel out of the backlight frame and prevent damage to those ribbon cables, their connection points or the thin board they're attached to. Then just lift the backlight panel up and the LCD panel stays flat on the table. For me, this was important because I don't have that much space. It then allowed me to handle removing the diffusion layer retainer frame while the back light was vertical, again carefully working my way around it, rotating it as needed. I could then simply remove the diffusion layers and put them in the same orientation on the LCD panel to prevent dust and damage. Then I removed the stand-offs, a few cables from the main board and all but one screw from the main board, just enough to rotate it to remove the final stand-off and then I reattached the main board back in place and reattach the cables to it. Then I just turned the backlight around and removed the reflector and put it face down on the diffusion layers, again in same orientation as when assembled. Watching another video of someone using an LED rework station from Shop Jimmy, I was inspired to clamp the handle of an old iron I normally use for applying melamine edging to melt the solder. I removed the adhesive just where I was changing a LED so it would not melt to the iron. Like most irons, this one has an automatic shut-off that does kick in, but if a plugged it in and set on high, I found it would get just hot enough to melt the solder for removal and re-solder before the automatic shut-off would kick in. If I needed longer, I just reached over and unplugged/replugged it to reset the safety cut-off and give me more time. I replaced three LEDs this way and it worked perfect every time. Where I removed the short sections of adhesive tape, I just used the thin 3M double-sided office tape they sell in small rolls already in a dispenser as a replacement.

Thank you for making this video. Ive manage to fix a 50" lg led tv which suffered 2 led failures. tested the strips using a 30v bench power supply, brought 2 6v led's and fitted them using a rework station. Made the job easy having the right tools but this video was my guide!

You are a life saver! after checking many many forums and calls to lg, which do nothing btw, i finally found this video. After pulling the tv apart and testing the leds i had the same exact repsonse. i ordered 2 strips of L2 which hopefully has enough spare leds to last me for a while. You saved me from LG and their $299 repair for only $30

I know this video is dated, but I found one of these sets thrown away so I snagged it just for curiosities sake. I found it to have the same issue as in your video. I bought a full set of LEDs and a power board since it blew while testing, installed and now I have a perfectly good working 47" LG TV thanks to your vid. I appreciate your time spent to teach us how to T/S and repair - Thanks from Houston Texas and keep up the good work!

Great video, explained very clearly about the back light led fault symptoms and how to disassemble the TV in stages in order to replace them. Having just watched this video I'm now sorry that I've ordered the av board earlier on today as this has convinced me that the fault is indeed with the back light led's which I knew I should have checked first but didn't. I'm just about to completely strip the TV and check them. Thanks for the great video that has probably saved a lot of extra work.

Great video. I am in the middle of this process with a VIZIO 470i-AO. Waiting on a set of LED strips now. I too habitually set my screen to the brightest setting but not anymore. Between the costs for the LED strips($85.00 with shipping) and two sided tape, add in labor cost of $30.00/hour, it would have cost me $275.00 to have this professionally repaired. So, aside from saving $190.00, i also learned a very valuable lesson on preserving the lifetime of my televisions.

GREAT advice...the first thing I did when my parents bought a CHEAP ( $400 !!!) SEIKI 4K TV 6 years ago was tell them to keep the backlight at no more than 75-80%. They haven't had problem one with it, while so many on Amazon were complaining of this CHEAP BRAND of 4K TV burning out so fast ! Turn down your backlighting off of 100% !!!

I would tell people to max the backlight at no more than 50 %....but, everyone always bumps them to 100 % because it's so vivid.....and as you said, it destroys them in short order....stumbled across this video, brings back memories of the old days. Hope all is well Steve. Best wishes. Frank. P.S....I sometimes look at your DLP and CC backlight videos....seems like it was ancient history...😄... Holy Shite! Looks like these things were made to be disposable. Repair is way too laborious for the layman. One huge takeaway though. Turning down the backlight is a great piece of advice. Also, sounds like a good reason to NOT buy a display model from a store as their TVs are on all day and at the brightest settings. I'm sure that would burn those LEDs out a lot quicker. A couple of humorous notes: Gilligan's Island can be seen playing on a different TV through the reflection on the screen while laying flat. Brings back memories. And, when the repaired TV is on for demenstration, it looks like the weatherman is doing the talking (obviously not, however) as his gestures appear to match up. Thanks for the video!

That's not always true. I bought the HP w22 monitor in 2007, which was a display model from a big store. I stopped using it regularly since two years ago, but other than that, I was using it on a daily basis for 10 years. I recently dimmed the brightness with a lot of pressure on the buttons, since their mechanism wore out. Can you believe that? An electronic product that is starting to fail due to mechanical failure? That's something we don't hear often. The trick is to not buy the first series (testing period on consumers), nor the later generations (planned obsolescence). Also, avoid LG products at all cost. They have no knowledge of practical engineering. For example, they soldered the RAM on the CPU in the LG G4.

Thanks for the video, very helpful. I was working specifically on a LG 47LN575V-ZE from the UK. I ended up with a cracked panel by taking out the plastic frame and not taking each layer out like you did. I've repaired two LG Tv's now with this same problem. an LG 47LN5700 and LG 47LN5750. In both cases a few LEDs were out. I replaced them and the TVs Functioned again. Couple of tips 1) I just taped the speakers down to the Back panel rather than remove them. Less loose stuff laying around 2) No point in testing the LEDs like he does here BUT you should replace all 12 LEDs otherwise you could repair it and then another LED that you didn't replace would go out and you'd be back to tearing the TV down again. 3) Keep note of the labeling of the LEDS Strips R1,L1 so you know where to put the replacement LED strips. To get the LED Strips off, I used a heat gun to soften/loosen the adhesive and then used a metal spudger to lift the LED strips off the panel. If no heat gun, you might be able to use a hair dryer.
@lfhlaw
@lfhlaw 7 лет назад
I don't replace the individual LED lights. I replace them by the strip. ShopJimmy can sometimes get you a whole set (new or used) otherwise you're looking on Ebay for 3-4 LED strips. Sometimes replacing just the "bad" strip will make all the other LED strips work again since they do function alot like Christmas lights. Once strip goes bad, 2 or 3 won't work because of that one.

@@lfhlaw Hi, My LG TV (50lb6300) starts blinking right from when I power it on. It blinks for every second and when I play something, the audio is good and video is running but keeps blinking. No flaw in any area of the screen. Can you plet let me know if this is a power circuit board problem or LED problem?
@lfhlaw
@lfhlaw 5 лет назад
@@saipadu123 To me, the blinking makes it sound more like a main motherboard Board or T-con (Timing) board issue. Usually when it's the LEDs on an LG TV, the LG logo will flash and then no picture at all (unless you flash flashlight on panel to see images). I would probably try replacing the T-con board 1st as it's cheaper. Shopjimmy does allow for Returns, but you can some of the boards cheaper on E-bay typically. Also, if you are able to take the back panel off(please unplug TV) and examine the Power board( the board where the power plugs into). look at the Capacitors(they look like soda cans). If any are bulging or have burst, they need to be replaced(soldering) which is cheap if you have skill. If not, you could just buy the replacement board online and replace the whole board (more $$$)

Hi norcal715, How the heck did you get the tv to stay on if there are a few led`s still out? The set should detect this and shut down.

Hello Steve,I just found your video and must say its the best Ive ever seen.I do beleive that a novice could do this by following your instructions.Do you teach TV repair by chance?

Great video. I had done the flashlight test and had image that I could see with full sound. I have the LG 47LN5750 and have replaced the T-Con Board, Power Board and all 12 LED strips. Did each one before ordering the next in that order. I don't think there is anything left to replace other than the main board but I can still see an image with the flashlight test. I show maybe 1 volt on one side and 1/2 volt on the other side going to the strips. Any other ideas?

I'm wondering, where do you get these specific LED's?

Dude, taking that screen out without using suction cups really had me on edge. Not only could it easily break, but you've just smudged all your fingerprints on the back of the screen!

Great video and explanation of how to repair an LED screen. I have an LG 50LN5100-UB that does not have any voltage at the LED connectors. I have removed the LED connector and still have no power at the connector. The power light turns on and at some point the screen does flash for about a 1/2 second. Would you think that the power board is bad in my case?

Great video, I have the same problem. Did the voltage checks exactly as you showed but I have no return voltage on either side. Would it still be the led strips?

I've got a 2013 one on my bench with the same issue. It appears that the LED's already mounted on the strips are for sale at not too much $$... so for those who don't want the soldering adventure, you can snag those.
