I lived in Singapore for 15 years. When I moved there in 2007, there was a real/proper life-work balance. My boss rarely text/call after hours or on weekends, unless its something extremely urgent re. events & tours I'm working on. If we choose to attend to work emails over the weekend and my boss got to know about it, she'd allow us to clock out early 1 day the following week. As time progress and I moved on to new companies; then came a side order of toxic. I was expected to be contactable around the clock and got reprimanded for not responding/acknowledging my boss's WhatsApp messages she sent after hours + on weekends. Working long late hours & weekends was something my boss would applaud. It all got too much, so decided to leave Singapore. One of the best decision I ever made!

I've worked in Singapore for about 20 years, and I've experienced that toxic culture in all advertising companies. I work from 9am all the way till past midnight (2ish) . I hardly leave work before the sun comes down. And sometimes they require you to come back on weekends without complaining. It's like I have to be thrilled to come back to work. I even worked past midnight very often when I was way into my 3rd trimester during pregnancy. It was terrible. If I'm 5mins late for work once in a blue moon coz i miss the bus, my timesheet gets marked, despite me working past midnight almost everyday for the entire year. It's just mental. Now I work in a French company, and there's a wonderful work life balance, and good welfare. I'm never ever going back to that toxic environment, and my advise for my kids to never ever enter such companies. Our health and family isn't worth sacrificing for such companies.

this is an interesting point. I nv knew it was just part of a Singapore work culture. i always thought it was quite normal to be added into group chats. but come to think of it, the only time I wasnt added into any work group chats was when I was working for a large American company. and i've had work experiences in 2 Gvt agencies, 1 local start-up, 1 huge Chinese company and 1 large American company. It can be rly draining because u nv get to tune off even when on leave. I love Singapore btw, just that it dawn upon me that this was a local work culture trait. thanks for bringing that up Georgia!

You are absolutely right to leave the Chat Group. You are no longer with the company. Why the heck do you want to chat with all the ex-colleagues? Some you may not like, some who don't like you and some you may have no interactions in the office. I deleted all my ex-colleagues tel. no. after I quit except a few who are on personnel level.

Me too, I did the same, I left the day my contract ended. It was a very toxic environment for me, and frankly I didn’t want contact with anyone from the company, didn’t delete most numbers, but they can’t see anything that I post on my social media. Some still call, I don’t really pick up ( I know it’s bad, but I just don’t want contact from anyone from that place). Now I’m happy really living life, working with digital products of all kinds (ebooks,online courses,planners),SaaS and I plan to start blogging too.

Hi Georgia, I've been watching your videos for a while and they're so inspiring. I really want to go live in Asia (currently live in Europe). I also hate working for others and want to work for myself, I have so much motivation but don't know where or how to get started, especially if I want to move to Asia (maybe Singapore) on top of it. Could you make a video on how you did it, any advice and tips for working for yourself, and even about how to go about all the admin? I find the idea so overwhelming... thank you!!!

Singaporean here and I’m so freaking annoyed on your behalf! That person is really a total nut job for creating a WhatsApp chat of ex employees, I’ve never heard of anyone creating a chat like that before. If you’re close with individual people after you leave just keep in contact one to one, don’t freaking drag other people into this. It’s such an invasion of boundaries. Glad you left the group and are in a better place now. ❤

I could not ever handle working for people either, that's why I've established my own biz in Asia, my own things just always make me feel comfortable rather than being an employee who has someone's eyes on my neck.

Nah I would leave it too. Anyway the chat was not set up by the company but by a person who left. So this is more about the person who set it up than about corporate culture or what not. Honestly I think she just wanted to keep in touch with others in the group. I’ve been in such a group too, and they would use this to ask to meet up. I would decline and leave quietly. Heh. No guilt!

You are over thinking about this chat group thingy. If you feel so strongly about it, just leave and you don't have to reply to anyone who question you? That's your prerogative. Live your life the way you see fit and not think too much about what others are thinking....then you are not only thinking for yourself but also thinking for others 😂
