Life is a Game of Bullshit. This is How You Win | Genevieve Gregorich | TEDxColumbiaUniversity

Social scientist Genevieve Gregorich shares how learning how to win at the card game Bullshit helped her succeed in life. In both the card game and life, winning involves the same strategy. And, like any good strategy, it’s not what you expect. Learn the power of truth in a game of deception to unlock your true potential. Genevieve (Vivi) Gregorich is a PhD candidate in Management at Columbia Business School with a focus on Strategy. Her research examines the role of business in society, the interaction between social movements and organizations, organizational reputation management, nonmarket strategy, and zero- sum thinking. She has authored cases on personal strategy and innovation with a focus on the psychological conditions that generate innovative ideas and the political processes that push ideas through corporate and bureaucratic labyrinths. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Being honest is what gives us strength. However, just like going to the gym, it requires ‘good form’ or else we risk injury. Right words. Right timing. Right intention.

Life is not a zero-sum game. When we are all honest and authentic, we are all better off. Don't be afraid to be different. Your unique perspective is what makes you irreplaceable. The most important thing is to find your own treasure. What lights you up? What gives your life meaning? Don't be afraid to take risks and step outside of your comfort zone. That's where the real growth happens.

I was put on the "b" team. They chose the "a" team based on physical attributes. Us kids on the "b" team all became good friends. We ended up playing against the "a" team in a tournament and crushed them, and went on to win the tournament. We had a common ground which was being looked down on and used that to our advantage. We become the better team 😊

This is one of the most powerful presentations I have ever seen. The choice of subject matter shows real genius. People lie because they are scared. They are scared of themselves, either what they have done or what they might do. This irrational fear is a form of shame, which is the root cause of every lie ever told.

The econ god story is a classic of example of fixed mindset verse growth mindset. You were labeled econ God, praised by how smart you were, and so anything that exposed yourself as less than that was a risk you weren't willing to take. So it meant you stopped growing. Hello. When I was little I was bullied in school. At home. I didn't know where I could turn to. I learned that I couldn't depend on anyone for anything. I learned to depend on myself for everything. I learned about the games people play. The manipulations of others were so visible. Once you gave attention you were taken for a ride. You get played with. Teased, and mocked. A game not for the weak of heart. Many times I contemplated committing suicide, because life didn't have meaning, or wasn't useful. Many times I wondeted why my mother gave birth to me if I was going to be a burden on to this world. I thought of myself being the lowest. Others told me so, and still do. This game is being played today by many. I learned too late in life that to win this battle it would take me a mental break down that lasted me 4 months in an asylum when I was 15. I learned the power my brain had over me. Also that words had meaning, and could break you. I broke when I was 15. Died, and rose when I was 26. Learned that the struggles of life are just in your head. I learned to be strong.
