Since Dusky Kobs are something we target quite often it's no surprise that it is getting an out-fish-her episode early on. To be honest, there are probably loads more kob videos to come so consider this the first instalment of a series called "the life of a Dusky Kob".
We talk about some touchy topics, some hard truths and sad realisations so it's probably not going to be everyone's cup of tea. You might not need Kleenex but hopefully, you'll get a new perspective on South Africa's most loved recreational species. To make sure it's not too gloomy we also talk about the PROMISING new developments in the Dusky Kob regulations that will, fingers crossed, be gazetted soon.
I would just like to say thank you for everyone's support so far. I've been overwhelmed by all the positive responses I've received and it seems like a few little fun facts can actually make a significant difference.

Fantastic message: I live in South Australia and have fished for Mulloway (Kob) for more than 35 years. I have caught plenty of them, I can count on one hand how many of these beautiful creatures I have kept. I spend a crazy amount of money on vehicles and tackle. My mates don't understand why I spend so much money and time and don't keep more fish. For me its not about putting fish on the table. Mulloway fishing is many many hours, long lonely hours of trying to outwit the greatest surf fish on the planet its the thrill of the catch and when I win I have a big silverfish at my feet. A picture will last forever.

Awesome vid, really appreciate the educational side of it as well. Unfortunately without proper policing the new regulations won't help. We see it here in Cape Town all fish get taken no matter the size and bag limit, no inspectors to check and if you call the inspectors they never come out.

In New South Wales Australia we can only keep one fish over 70cm our problem is that commercial fishermen net the rivers and can catch 500kg a day it won’t long before recreational anglers will not be able take any fish at all. I’ve for them for 40yrs and only ever fished huge baits to limit catching small fish. Now I barely fish for them at all because our stocks are considered DEPLETED and I squarely blame commercial fishermen for the decimation of our stocks.

Thanks for your support from all the way over there 😊 sad to hear that the species is facing the same problems all over. The SA Dusky Kob and your Mulloway are actually the same species Argyrosomus japonicus. Although the mulloways have different length to weight ratios, slightly different life histories and different size classing. Not quite different enough to classify a new species according to taxonomists.

Had a little chuckle at 08:34 when you first had to think hard about "Beter as niks nie." But awesome video as usual, super informative! Like a few people have already mentioned, you've got by far the best fishing content of any South African fisherman on RU-vid.

That is a tube of 80% ethanol (available at pharmacies as surgical spirits) for sterilising the tag and applicator.

You keep the Kob that are just over size : The Breeding stock : Are the fish that have the biggest impact upon increasing the Kob Biomass. Why ? Because they spawn each year: Releasing millions of eggs. Besides : Big fish flesh will have accumulated a lot of toxins and position

Does south africa have fish farms for kob
@viviennedames
@viviennedames 2 года назад
Yes, we do although they are limited This does not mean to say that the Dusky Kobs are suitable for release into the wild, that's a whole different story. They are usually grown to about 45cm for the market, rearing fish that are this slow growing makes it difficult to turn a profit.

Don't keep any, dear fellow anglers please evolve we can't keep them and keep catching them into the future. Kob stocks are 10% of what they were in the 1980's let that sink in they are on the edge every fish you kill is critical for the species survival
