In this video, Dr. Pitre discusses Jesus calling his disciples the light of the world in the Sermon on the Mount. Where does Jesus get this image from and what does it have to do with the disciples being the new Israel?

Good commentary. Very much a part of Traditional Roman Catholic thinking as seen in Architecture for example. In the Western Catholic Church Light has always played a part of the theology that helped construct Church and Cathedral. Huge windows and the play of Light has long been the understanding of how a Church should be viewed. Contrast with the Eastern Churches where Mystery has traditionally played the central role, so the churches are darker lit by flickering candles before golden icons. The study of theology has great aspect of understanding other disciplines and in The light of the World we see it very much affect how our architecture in the Roman West has been created.

Why did Isaiah say "Our works were as filthy rags"
@claymcdermott718
@claymcdermott718 4 года назад
That's a fascinating question in light of Jesus' statement in the above discussed passage, that our "good" works are to shine before others. Jesus is not contradicting Isaiah64 here; rather, reflecting on Isaiah 64, we see that the plaintive Israelites persist in iniquity, and that they have become unclean, and the good which they had done - in the past - has become like a rag that is now dirty, or like a leaf that is now faded. They cannot appeal to their former good deeds for vindication, to be delivered from exile, as their former good deeds are now as filthy rags, or faded leaves. The leaf metaphor is further expanded on, when Isaiah says that they are as leaves that have been scattered - a perfect metaphor for exile. Isaiah 64 ends with a prayer asking God if He will punish them forever, and Isaiah beseeches God's mercy. Isaiah 65 shows that God in His great love will give an inheritance, "Jerusalem Rejoicing," for His chosen, "Those who seek Me," and He will punish those who commit dramatic violations of His Law.

1Corinthians 1:3 Grace and peace to you from God ( Jehovah ) our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Matthew 5:16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father ( Jehovah ) in heaven. Zechariah 4:6 by my Spirit, says the Lord Almighty. John 4:24 God ( Jehovah ) is Spirit... ( And he can rest that Spirit on any man he chooses ) Matthew 3:16 he saw the Spirit of God ( Jehovah ) descending like a dove and lighting on him. 1John 5:6-9 This is the one who came by water and blood - Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit ( Jehovah ) who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. For there are three that testify: the Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement. We accept man's testimony, but God's ( Jehovah's ) is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son. 1Timothy 2:5-6 For there is one God ( Jehovah ) and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all men - the testimony given in its proper time! 1John 5:11 And this is the testimony: God ( Jehovah ) has given us eternal life ( heaven ) and this life is in his Son. Isaiah ( Prophet for the last days ) in the Great Isaiah Scroll: 45:55 I am YHWH and there is no one else, and beside Me there is no God... Matthew 22:31 have you not read what God ( Jehovah ) said to you.... WORSHIP ONE GOD JEHOVAH

I would, but Jehovah's linguistically impossible in Hebrew. By the way, I love what the Jehovah's Witnesses do, many times, when the word Lord is used in the New Testament refer to Jesus, they do not translate it is Jehovah God. Even people like me, who have never formally studied Greek, know that that's nonsense. Maybe y'all should take the warning from The Book of Revelation, about adding or subtracting from the word of God, more seriously.

Adam Hovey Maybe every Bible Translation other than the New World Translation should restore God's personal name Jehovah (in English) to the almost 7,000 times it appears in the original Scriptures. I call that subtracting from the word of God.

A “Catholic both and” that gives us the figurative language that explains all the other “both ands”. Does Jesus save or do the Sacraments save? It’s Jesus’ the light shining in the Sacraments! It’s Jesus the light shining in the doctrine of the Church! It’s Jesus’ light shining in our works. Or rather it’s Jesus work through us! And..... Does Our Lady save or does Jesus save? She who was preserved from all darkness by the light of the world is too all light. She magnifies the Lord!

ThanksStJoseph Sorry, but that’s not biblical and that’s not describing the God of the Bible, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Isaiah 42:8 I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images. Come out of that false church. Your salvation depends on it.

Exodus 20:2-4 Thou shalt have no other God's before Me.... Numbers 6:24-26 The Lord bless you and keep you ( Jehovah ) The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you ( Jesus ) The Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace ( Jacob ) Luke 6:46 Why do you call me, Lord, Lord and do not do what I say? Isaiah 9:2 The people walking in darkness have seen a great light. Isaiah ( Prophet for the last days ) in the Great Isaiah Scroll: 29:22 Not now shall Jacob be ashamed and his face shall not grow pale. 42:1 Behold my servant ( Jacob ) whom I uphold, my chosen, my soul delights. I put my Spirit upon him... 42:13 YHWH shall go out as a mighty man.... 53:5 the correction of our peace upon him ( Jacob )... 1Peter 3:12-13 For the eyes of the Lord ( Jesus ) are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayers, but the face of the Lord ( Jacob ) is against those who do evil. Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? John 4:24 God ( Jehovah ) is Spirit... I have told ( Jehovah ) and have saved ( Jesus ) and I have declared ( Jacob ) Isaiah 48:12 Listen to this, Jacob, and Israel my called. I am He ( Jehovah ) I am the first ( Jesus ) even I am the last ( Jacob ) Isaiah 40:12 for she received from the hand of YHWH two handfuls ( Jesus and Jacob ) for all her sins. Psalm 136:3 O give thanks unto the Lord of Lord's for his Mercy endureth forever. Psalm 135:4 For the Lord has chosen Jacob to be his own Israel to be his treasured possession. Catholics are dead wrong. Christians are saved by faith alone. First and foremost. And after we are saved by the grace of God through our faith, it is only then that we are called to do the good works our Father in heaven has foreordained us to do. This fact is the prevailing theme found throughout the New Testament. Only the blind can’t see. Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Ephesians 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. Are Catholics actually going to boast of their good works in front of God almighty, the crucified glorified Lord of all creation, and King of kings? He will kindly ask you in return, then why did I shed my precious blood for you? And His holy angels will show you the door out of the kingdom because Catholics reject the gospel of Jesus Christ for their means of salvation. Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. Romans 1:17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith. Catholics, I beg you to read the Scriptures for yourselves and stop listening to false teachers like Pitre.

The Lesser Confessor I’m not misconstruing anything. We are saved by our works, ever. Not even a little bit. Can you read the Scriptures I provided? Are you confused? The relationship between faith and works is very clear in the Bible. Why do you listen to this false teacher who is denying Gods Word? You are being led astray my friend.

Light2015 Why would you assume I haven’t? Do those chapters tell me to save myself with my good works instead of believing Jesus is the Christ. The son of the living God who died for my sins on the cross and rose the third day?

@@michaeljamesreed9054 Of course a lot of this is confusion over what is meant by 'faith.' If you mean enduring loyal action like the Latin 'fidelis' (like where we get fidelity, which is the faithfulness one spouse ought to be able to expect from the other), that's one thing. If you mean just intellectual assent, like belief, that's just wholly incorrect and so very easy to argue.
