Light Phone 2 Review | Can This Phone Cure Your Social Media Addiction?

Light Phone II ($350) is the second iteration of a device that returns the cell phone to its roots; namely, there is no way to use social media. You can play music and order ride shares, but beyond that you're essentially limited to calls and texts. Its E Ink display and small form factor are a striking contrast to the iPhone you're using right now.

Part of the problem I have with it is that it's *not* just a phone. If it were just a phone, it would only make calls and possibly text. This is basically a smartphone without social media, which ... is dumb. If you want a smartphone without social media, get a normal smartphone and don't put any social media apps on it.

The big appeal to this phone is its supported on a 4G LTE network. A lot of these flip phones and “dumb phones” max out at 3G. With many networks dropping 3G by 2022, you will be forced to get something more modern. This will at least last you. Though $350? Really interesting to watch these reviews by members of the zombie apocalypse club, people who are addicted to their smart phones and are totally unaware of the debilitating nature of their disease. They should try watching "The Social Dilemna" although I suspect they would simply deny the existence of the smart phone pandemic that is sweeping the world. I'm reminded of the Startrek TNG episode entitled "The Game" where members of the crew are enticed into donning a headset that allows them to play a game that is psychotropically addictive, having been created by a foreign race that is using the device to gain control of Starfleet. I feel like I'm in that space when I see people walking around constantly checking their smart phones and totally unaware of their surroumdings. To me this appears to be the perfect phone to give to a teenager to prevent them from joining the lost generation, the people who can't think for themselves and are slaves to their click suggestions.

That’s SO funny you mention The Game. I watched that episode recently after discussing The Light Phone with someone and it struck me how addicted I am to certain screens. $300 is a lot to pay for this kind of simplicity but I may jump on the bandwagon soon. Even YT has become an addiction and Instagram is nothing but targeted ads now. Glad someone else saw that parallel 👍🏻

Couple of things detractors in the comments are missing: - E-ink for eye protection. This is huge and people aren't focussing on it enough. - "Just delete apps from your regular phone" but I can't... I need Outlook etc for work. This phone is to grab on the weekend when heading to the beach, or out with friends/family. - The whole point is to remind you, every time you pick it up, to only use it for as long as you have to. This phone misses the point a little bit, in that a minimalist phone experience isn't about "no texting" or "no social interaction", but it's about weaning off the distracting parasocial interactions with people you meet on apps like facebook or reddit. It should be easy and simple to interact with people you know IRL or need to contact practically (doctors, coworkers). The difficult to navigate UI does little for "minimalism" and does more to make the phone unappealing to use. "I hate using my phone, therefore I'm cured of my phone addiction!!". A minimalist phone should be quick, low headache and functional, and though I get the desire to make the experience unlike a smartphone, it still needs to be enjoyable. Adding in emojis and a camera wouldn't hurt anyone either

How you do social networking internationally through Skype, messenger, Viber? Then what is the meaning of WiFi connection? Is it waterproof? Quite expensive?? Is same like old nokia so would prefer the cheaper one? If it says mobile cell phone and when network o then it should work isn’t it? It should all those functions plus wife/online chat app to make cheaper internationally...prefer camera and voice recording

Go buy yourself an iphone 5 for $50. Phone, text, maps, rideshare, no social media. Small light. Even smaller and lighter since you can run it without a case.

5:56 Self control is a strange concept. One thing that has been learned about self control, at least in terms of habits is that is not very reliable. Especially with something like a smartphone that has apps within it designed specifically to get you hooked. So this guys judgemental comment is pretty ignorant IMO. Maybe he hasn't developed the habit. Good for him. Or he is just fine with staring at his phone all day. But for people that really want to change for the better I think this a great option and backed by what we know about behavior change.

This was one of the most frustrating reviews I’ve ever watched. The first half was just unnecessary, or you could have at least recorded the guys using it instead of having 6 minutes of just talking about the phone without showing it. There is also a lot of pretentiousness in this review. I tried to skip to the main review and couldn’t finish.

if you have the will power to buy and use this phone over your smartphone, you have the will to delete “distracting/addicting” apps, no? plus older “dumb phone” still exists and can be bought...i find this phone unnecessary

Yeah, that's kind of our takeaway also. At $350 it's pretty steep and you could get a phone that doesn't completely disconnect you unless you choose to. We do like the concept of needing a phone like this though, pretty interesting.
@heygem
@heygem 4 года назад
@@gearpatrol you can get a basic Android One Go phone for $100. Its hardware is crippled enough that u won't enjoy using it, but it has full software functionality that you're not wasting money. You can use Maps, sync all contacts with Google, do WhatsApp and texts and calls. Since you won't enjoy using it, you won't use it as much. Yet it'll still be there when you need it. And it's much cheaper.
@gearpatrol
@gearpatrol 4 года назад
@@heygem Yeah that's our take, you can get a full-fledged phone (or a couple) for the price and just limit yourself. We do like the premise but at its price it seems a little out of reach. BUT how do you create a phone as an independent company? The economies of scale have to hurt you pretty hard, it's incredibly impressive that these even exist.

The concept is good. However, paying $350 for a tiny plastic finish product in 2020 makes me feel extremely sad. Why would I do that? Why not just buying a 2nd hand iPhone 3 and delete all the social media apps?

I read some of the review Digital Trends had and in their conclusions they compared it to Samsung phone for the same price that had many more features-literally missing the whole point of the phone.

Can you use it as a hotspot for your tablet for example? Love the concept of the phone, just calls and text. But I would love to have a hotspot so if I need to I can check my email and other stuff if I need to on my tablet or laptop. P.S.: I love the headphone jack, I don't have any wireless headphones ;) p.p.s.: just saw the last minutes of the video and I hope that the hotspot becomes a feature of the phone in the future!! would love it!

@Richard F Glad to find someone who actually uses it! I’m considering purchasing and was wondering if I could transfer all of my messages from my iPhone to the Light phone as well? And if so, do you know what the capacity is on the Light phone, because I’m afraid I’d be over that with the amount of messages I would have. (Bonus question, I was assuming it doesn’t do MMS, is that correct?)

You do know the reasoning of the phone is to disconnect you from disconnecting on social media. The phone has a lot of useful functioning and it’s supposed to be a little harder to engage with your phone. The entire purpose. It seems like you guys are also very involved with the media and technology so of course your opinion is skewed. :)
@falsum2701
@falsum2701 3 года назад
These guys really don't seem to get what the light phone is actually about. It's not meant to be a second phone or a temporary detox (although, sure, some people might use it that way). It is meant to be your phone. Your only phone. It's for people (myself included) who want to be able to call and text and listen to podcasts, without the distraction of social media. Yes, the price is a little on the high side (typical for a niche product), but the idea that you could get a used iPhone for the same price completely misses the point. This is not intended to be a discount product. It's intended to be a product for people who are actively trying to avoid smartphones. Also it was hilarious that the one guy thought that the headphone jack was a bug rather than a feature.

I actually like the idea- I think it’s missing a few things, like a map would be nice, so would a Bluetooth for wireless headphones. I have to say, ultimately I don’t think the phone will matter as much as I’d like it to..for example: I still have to have near constant access to my email for work, school, etc, so I’ll still have to compulsively check my MacBook. It’s a small start but the way I see it, the economy and our way of life is more and more being built around the connectivity of the age- the same way most cities and towns are built around the idea of you absolutely needing a car..it just isn’t going to keep up with the demands of today. In short, I literally can’t afford to stay off the grid. Again, I would “like” to - no, love to, but I just don’t think it’s doable.

Gear Patrol, I'm not sure the concept of the video worked. This is first impression taken a bit far. I mean, half of the first 4 minutes were explaining to three different people what the phone was. Maybe a 2nd impression (say the on camera personality has had the phone for at least 10 minutes already) could have been more informative.
