This is a tutorial about an awesome lighting add-on that helps lighting by allowing you to simply point and click on a surface location where you'd like lighting to appear. This is a paid add-on, but it allows for fast and accurate lighting and so I felt it was worth doing a tutorial on.
If you'd like to purchase it, here is the link. blendermarket.com/products/lig...

00:26 Adding a light
01:22 Adjusting position of existing lights
01:35 Light Wrangler Preferences

This is such a game changer! It is something i’d really like to see in the vanilla Blender. I’m using Blender for a while now, but I still struggle to set lights and reflections where i would like them to be. This makes lighting seem really intuitive!

This is so expandable, intuitive and a real time saver. Love all your dig downs on IOR, Specular, AGX etc etc. De-mystifying if you like.

Wow thats a pretty sweet addon. It feels like HDR Studio application. The way it is abke to place lights interactivly feels the same. Stunning work by that dev!!!

If I had to guess how this is working. I think he uses the normal map of the rendered image to project the light object perpendicular to the angle. Not sure how he does that in the fly thought it's genius! Edit I didn't notice it was the 3dview where you were interacting with. So perhaps he's using ray cast on the object, get the normals and then project the light perpendicular to that. Amazing man

He's made improvements to the add-on making it even more useful since I recorded this. I'm going to be doing an update soon.

One thing I would change. It's very annoying for a user to jump into the preferences all the time. This could use a panel right in the viewport
@RomboutVersluijs
@RomboutVersluijs 5 месяцев назад
I already got so many ideas to expand this addon. Like adding more features in that quick menu to alter it's shape. Now it only does square. I would add option for round as well. Also I would added height and with. I would also expand it with softbox setups. But this implementation does keep it simple. The user can still do what ever he/she wants and is easier to maintain for the devleopper

That looks promising! I would suggest given that a lot of the settings depend on the scene, it would be better for the addon to override the preferences somewhere on the scene rather than globally. Then you wouldn't have to worry about resetting it for every different project you work on. It could still have a global config to set defaults for you if you tend to work on similar scenes a lot. Also, adjusting the settings via the side panel in the viewport would be more convenient that going into the preferences each time.

I agree, it’s a lot to have it sitting on global prefs. There is enough for me to keep track of already

Unless I'm losing what passes for my mind these days, I'm pretty sure I remember 3D Studio having a similar feature when I was using is back around 15 years ago, you effectively clicked where you wanted the specular highlight to be and it calculated where to stick the light. Immensely useful and something I'm definitely glad to see being implemented here.

@Dhruv1223
@Dhruv1223 7 месяцев назад
I'm not sure if it was there 15 years back because even I can't remember but yeah 3ds max did have a place highlight option that allowed you to align the light to any object by selecting this option and then clicking where you wanted the effect to happen, it still does

One suggestion would be to allow for mouse wheel to adjust the distance. For example scrolling up would send the light further. Scrolling down would bring it closer to the object.
@sebastian-sarbu
@sebastian-sarbu 7 месяцев назад
Left mouse buton could adjust the size, or maybe use keyboard arrows for this? Right mouse buton could change the spread. Numbers could change the power.

Hi, thanks! It's already implemented: Light Power: Modify the intensity using your mouse wheel. Light Size: Adapt the size for desired lighting effects. (Shift+Wheel) Light Distance: Control the proximity between the light and the target. (Alt+Wheel) Light Spread: Change the angle of light spread. (Ctrl+Wheel)

I don't think it uses the new geo nodes tool, this is a combination of good old Python scripting and shader nodes.

Hi Christopher. As a long in the tooth CGI guy who has switched over to Blender... Kudos on having hands-down the best channel on the technical side of cycles materials, lighting and colour management bar none! Do you have any solutions for getting blender AGX into resolve for Black magic Wide Gamut or ACES? (sorry for the repeat post, I didn't see you had posted this latest video)
@christopher3d475
@christopher3d475 7 месяцев назад
Thank you. I don't use Davinci Resolve so I wouldn't be able to directly answer your question. At its heart, the application you want to use AgX with must support OpenColor IO. The config files that use it can be swapped between applications however.

@@christopher3d475 I was thinking when adding a light, use the mouse wheel to increase the light size, so you can move the light and increase the light use with wheel at the same time. Same thing with adjusting the light using wheel to increase the size would be useful. Wheel up for increase, Wheel down to decrease light size.
@MetalGearMk3

@@christopher3d475 Also maybe Ctrl + mouse wheel can be used to increase/decrease the distance of the light to the surface for both adding light and adjusting the light.
