Lighting my old paraffin (kerosene oil) Tilley Lamp. Use the pre-burner to warm it with methylated spirits (meth) then start pumping once I'm the method burns down. As you can see later in the video the mantle provides a relatively warm white light compared to a single wyke oil burner or candle.
You will also notice that I left it too long the first time around before I tried to start the paraffin burn.

Metalated Spirits, in the UK it has blue dye in it that tastes fowl to ensure people do not use it to get drunk (and go blind).

Probably a dumb question but where do you put the mantle on these since some pressure lamps I've seen have two smaller jets for mantles to go

The mantle ties above the jets and then again below them. In both places there are indents for the string to be tied. If the mantle is not there, a fine mist of paraffin would be sprayed inside the lamp glass. With the mantle there and after pre-warming it is captured on the inside of the mantle a burns inside it. Broadlander has a good two part video on stripping down a Tilley Lamp and putting it back together. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WZjIU-XA_9w.html in the second part he fires it without the mantle, which gives you an idea of the flame it covers. The pair show you all the parts quite well.

Hi Thomas.Thank you for video. I would like to ask if the valve should open gradually ? Mine seems to go from OFF to Fully On. Thanks again.

Hi Patriot, Yes the valve going from closed to fully on is normal. It is not meant to be a way to regulate the light level. It is primarily meant to be a way to work the needle which clears debre from the fuel tube.

I'd not recommend lighting it indoors as if you have spilled paraffin it would be a fire hazard. Once it is warmed up and running then it should be quite safe. You can smell the burnt pardon a bit, might not want to be in a small enclosed space with it (or any other flame) for many hours and should always be around fires to keep an eye on them, etc. I also have an Aladdin mantle lamp that is designed to be indoors. These might be a little safer as they don't pressurise the fuel but they do use a mantle so are very bright. Aladdin style lamps are quite delicate though, whereas theses Tilly Lamps are a bit more robust as they are portable.

The full jar of meths will never go BOOM but the video could hardly be decribed as " best practice " !!

Balancing the preheater on top of the meths jar is one of the most stupid and dangerous tricks I ve seen.When you light the preheater I can see flame on the rim of the jar .On a hot day that jar could be full to the brim with flamable vapour BOOM.

Having deliberately lit that jar to see how bad it would be you are over exaggerating the risk. Yest it might light and I'd need to put it out before the glass got too hot but it's not that bad.
