The most tragic thing about Buzz's story arc (both of them) is the fact that he sees all of this as his fault. When Alisha died, he didn't see the whole picture of her life story. All he could focus on was the fact that she died stranded on a planet because of his mistake. In other words, in his mind, his mistake cost her her life. Then when the first Buzz escaped to the far future and saw what had become of humanity (maybe slaves to robots or some other horrible future) all he could think was that none of this would've happened if not for his mistake. The first Buzz never got the chance to see any of the good that came from his mistake, because he never met Izzy in person. The only thing he could think was that his mistake had caused nothing but pain, suffering, and death for generations of stranded humans all because of his mistake. No wonder he was willing to undo centuries of history. In his mind, he's trying to save the future of humanity. And there's no indication that he can't just casually introduce Alisha to her wife after they reach their destination. That plan may have been in the back of his mind the whole time he just never got the opportunity to implement it. Now I'm not saying this to absolve him of any wrongdoing. I'm just exploring his motivation for doing so.

My favorite part of the movie was Buzz's character arc. He made a mistake and he feels compelled to fix it, until he realizes that some good came out of it. It's a really touching story. Plus, Sox is the best! Just out of curiosity, which would you rather have, Sox or Baymax?

I recently saw Lightyear on Disney+ and to my surprise, it was not what I expected. I could understand why some have issues with the film, but I had a good time watching it despite its shortcomings. Also, my favorite character is Sox! He was a delight to watch from start to finish.🙂

This movie was something special for me as a mega fan of Buzz. The film really became an exhilaratingly awesome space adventure that soars to infinity and beyond for our heroes! AND SOX IS THE BEST

There is a 3rd clip at the end!! I enjoyed it soooo much! People who dont liked this movie is because they still think this is the movie based on the action figure not that the action figure is based on the movie. Also lots of people did not like that she is married to a girl instead to a boy. I loved everything about the movie also your reaction! Lots of love from a half Belgian and a half German living in Spain!

This was a film that frustrated me concerning the lore. According to Woody, Toy Buzz’s memories (and by extension Toy Zurg) match their “real” selves. And by the film’s opening and promotional material, this is the film Andy saw that got him excited for Buzz Lightyear. Toy Zurg claimed to be Buzz’s father. When he believed he was the same Zurg from the film. Oh, and that promotional image of Andy watching the film included his toy LGMs, which he got not before TS1 but after TS2. After Toy Story 2, Disney released their Star Command pilot film and tv series, which Rex confirmed was part of the same in-universe lore. It contained things like Future Buzz being good yet senile, Zurg not believing Buzz could ever be evil until meeting alternate dimension Emperor Buzz, and a rich cast of characters including Commander Nebula and Warp Darkmatter. This “canon” film practically uncanonizes the cartoon shown in canon. Could you at least react to that pilot direct-to-VHS film Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, and compare and contrast the different settings and continuities? Sox VS XR, Future Zurg VS Emperor Zurg, the different Rookie squads, etc?

I feel like any inconsistencies with the lore would've been explained in the sequel(s) to _Lightyear._ (The director mentioned that he saw it as the first in a trilogy.) Unfortunately, the box office results make that seem unlikely. 😟 With regards to the different rookie squads (Mira, Booster, and XR vs. Izzy, Mo, Darby, and Sox), I can confirm that Sox is the best out of all those characters combined.

My theory could be that the cartoon came after the movie and that buzz is directly based and modeled off the cartoon and bot exactly the movie Andy watched. Some franchises start of as live action films (which I would assume that's what lightyear movie supposedly is in the pixar universe), and then later on make a kids version by making a cartoon like they have done with the cgi starwars clone wars show. Or maybe the show came out first, and then the life action movie. Andy saw the live action movie which got him inspired to love buzz lightyear and watch the cartoon and then buy the toy based off the cartoon.

Seconded. I like the cartoon film better than this one. The cartoon show is proof that whoever spearheaded Lightyear didn’t care for established in-universe lore. Aside from, you know, promotional material showing a post TS2 Andy watching the film “for the first time,” and making Buzz have an Oedipus complex.

There are people who say that they wasted the opportunity to make zurg a good villain, I don't think so, what made them think that he is a villain in the first place? Just because he appears as a toy in toystory 2? Is that the source you consulted to have the right to say that he is a villain? Well, I don't see it very reliable, and it seems incredible to me that they made zurg never be destined to be a bad person or in this case, a villain.

You definitely need to check out The Pixar Theory! Its right up your alley. It's the (unconfirmed?) elaborate theory developed by Jon Negroni that all the events that occur in Pixar movies are connected within the same universe and affect each other. Some of it is even non-linear (timey-wimey 😉). Just look it up on RU-vid. A reaction to it would be super cool too! (Maybe after you're all caught up on the Pixar filmography)

Josh Coley, the Toy Story 4 director says that the Pixar Theory is debunked, all the different movies AREN'T in the same universe, it wouldn't make sense for Cars have no humans at all, neither does Onward and The Good Dinosaur's universe have the meteor that killed all the dinosaurs miss, while in all other movies dinos are extinct just in real life. The Pixar Theory is just a theory that doesn't hold any water! Just deal with it and move on!

I think the main reason that Tim Allen wasn't used for Buzz is because in the 90's because of the busy scedule of Hollywood actors and that toys are needed to be released around the same time as the premiere of a movie, plus the fact that the digital technology for recording stuff didn't esist and the Internet was only out offfically for a couple of months around Toy Story was released (the Internet back then was "primitive" compaired by today's standards, you couldn't download big files back then which took long time and you were dialed up per minute like on the phone so it was expensive to do that anyway) so it wasn't possible to use sound files from the movies for toys unlike today. Jim Hanks, Tom Hanks' brother did voice the Woody dolls back then as he was not as busy as Tom and his voice was very similiar so they could get away with that.

This movie isn’t canon. Buzz Lightyear of Star Command is what the toy is based on. Buzz’s team includes Mira Nova, Booster and XR, not the screw ups in this movie. The partner that Buzz loses is Warp Darkmatter, not Alisha Hawthorne. Buzz is from Capital Planet, not Earth. This movie is a non canon cash grab from Pixar.

The time lines does branch as Old Buzz (Zurg) is not the same as the "real" Buzz, therefore if Zurg killed Buzz, it wouldn't affect him.

The Zurg-thing is explained by Old Buzz in the movie, but I gotta admit I can't remember what it was 😅 I had my reservations going into this, bc I feared this would be a generic cash-grab, but it turns out the plot is well thought out and the movie has a lot of heart. I really enjoyed it! My only "complaint" with the movie is that considering the context, that this is supposed to be the movie Andy and millions of other kids saw, that created the demand for a Buzz Lightyear toy, would this really be the kind of a movie that would appeal to 5-8 year old kids to that degree?

I was hoping Lightyear would be a cinematic masterpiece that would allow Pixar to dominate in galactic sci-fi. No, they didn’t. They just wanted to have a separate version of buzz. Since they had Patrick warburton as the animated buzz lightyear, Tim Allen as the buzz lightyear toy, we have Chris evens as movie buzz lightyear. The director even had the reason to why they did since the movie tie in toys to movies don’t sound like the actors.

things i didnt like in this movie 1) mentioned like 2 comments below me about the buzz lightyear problems. 2) im sorry, but that black astronaut/person was SO irritating. she was not her grandma, she doesnt just gain the experience her grandma had by being related to her. she does stupid shit for the idea of "its what she would do" and i feel like they did a throw away line of "im not her" without her actually understanding that at all in the movie. she was the worst part of the film and legit almost took all the fun out of the movie

1) it’s a different iteration of buzz lightyear, it’s meant to be different. 2) Liz’s part of the movie was about the expectations buzz had based on her grandmother who buzz personally knew. It took them to come to terms that they had to be themselves than expecting to be just like the people who raised them.

The problem why this movie was not big, its because they priorized Lesbian kisses instead of the story. Many prople still didnt know what about Lightyear is, without the Lesbian kiss. And they didnt let Buzz originsl voice actor speak in Lightyear, just because he is a conservative and wr know that Hollywood and Disney discriminates and bully heavely conservatives and Christiand. On top of that, this movie is actually a Spinoff. Because officislly, the reason why Buzz lightyear became a toy, its because of the cartoon series. This cartpon is the true origin of Buzz Lightyear and not this movie Lightyear. After all, what would a little boy do with a movie that is so confusing? The boy will of course prefer and watch the cartoon series with Buzz, the red haired princess snd other friends of Buzz, with the iconic villain!
