A detailed full service guide incorporating my one off Lima service method for a friend’s class 73.
This is a step by step guide so stick with it to the end.
Lima mechanisms are great little things, will last ages and put up with a lot.
In my Lima service guides (this is 3 of 3 now) I show how to get them running super smooth.
All that will be required going forward in time is very occasional lubrication with Hob-e-Lube medium oil and periodic cleaning of the commutator and brushes.
Enjoy and please see my other two guides featuring other Lima locos.
Special shout out to Julian and his son for entrusting City Of Winchester to me.

The old Lima pancake motor is one of the most reliable and easily repaired model train power units ever. This is why there are still so many old Lima trains out there and running. Was never given the credit it deserved back in the day. But now it has become kind of legendary and for good reason. Also Mazok Rot and Zinc Pest will never be a problem for Lima locos.

Los motores lima son confiables y nobles, no deben ser reemplazados, hay que mantenerlos y optimizarlos para obtener excelentes resultados...

Fabulous video Mike, you've just shown me the things I didn't do when I serviced the motor in my dads old Railcar, now I can do it correctly when I come to do all of his other locos :0) Cheers Mike, have a fab Sunday.

Excellent "how to" Mike and very well presented. I did like the advice on removing the bogie and not the body...Simon

Hi Simon, many thanks, yes the body can be a right pain to open so this is a much easier option :)

Thanks for this, Mike. Very helpfull, I like the attention to the small details of the service. I have a (very) old Lima Deltic that could do with this treatment. Keep up the good work....All the best.....Tom

Just bought a Lima 73, my first ever model. I don't have a layout so I've got to wait ages to find somewhere to run it - almost makes me wants to do this service before I even run it for the first time... Great video Mike... subscribed!

@MikesMovies 7 лет назад
Hi and many thanks indeed, new subscribers are always wonderful. I would get on with the service so its ready, do you have a table top where you could set out a oval of set track? I did that for a number of years, check out some of my old videos lol good luck
@VehicularBrit
@VehicularBrit 7 лет назад
MikesMovies I'll take your advice on that one and get on with it - just need to buy the oils before I can crack on. I have considered a loop but I don't really have anywhere it could go semi-permanently as space is very much limited in my house.

Very interesting with great info. I wish I could have seen you solder the wires back as my Lima Deltic feed wire from the non powered bogie has come off and I am not a good one at soldering. Thanks for sharing.

Darn, I shouldn't have watched this video! I think I have six Lima 73s, a 47 and two 37s! All but one, a 73, are quite noisy. I use to pretend that it's the diesel sound :) A great instruction video Mike. If you ever visit Sweden and want something to do... ;-) /Anders
@MikesMovies
@MikesMovies 7 лет назад
LOL Anders, my fleet is bigger still and I have four class 40s to do still :) It took me two hours start to finish with this one, but remember I was filming it, I think an hour per loco provided you have it all set out ready to go. I serviced ten locos in a day once, that was hard work mind :) Thanks for watching

Hi Mike, can the Hornby 73 bottom plate be removed to rectify noisy gears. The service sheet appears to be sealed unit.
@MikesMovies

Hi John. I don't know the Hornby version at all, but I'd imagine you can get to the gears, have you tried RMweb?

Thanks very much Dave, yes the old Limas can run just as well (almost) as some of the new stuff. I have a good allocation of them ;) I'd love to help with yours but time is a real problem for me. You could always give it a go yourself? Let me know how you get on, am now off to check out your video

Hi Mike Thanks for the great videos. I notice that what you call "grease" isn't what Hob E Lube sell as grease (which is in a tube, not an applicator). Is it their Premium Gear Lubricant that you use ?
@MikesMovies
@MikesMovies 6 лет назад
Hi Ray, yes that's it I use the Premium stuff because I like the applicator. Same stuff inside :)

Hello Mike. I want to DCC the Lima Class 73. Should I remove that capacitor in between the two motor terminals. Thanking you. Ray
@MikesMovies
@MikesMovies 7 лет назад
Hi Ray, I am no expert on DCC, but I think that yes you do remove it or it may interfere with the output of the DCC chip

Hi, may I ask where you're based and if you carry out repairs? I've dug out my old engines and have one of these but the motor bogie is broken ☹️ and would love to have it running.
@MikesMovies
@MikesMovies 2 года назад
Hi Sussex UK, but I honestly don't get time to work on my own stuff lol. You can upload a video of the problems, maybe we can at least say if it's fixable?
@allezbooton
@allezbooton 2 года назад
@@MikesMovies Thanks for getting back. It's just a broken support on the motor bogie, I think I might be able to glue a piece of plastic in its place to provide the support - your video has shown me how to get the bogie off though, or rather in a way that will allow it to be put back in afterwards 🤣
