The S.C.A.M. was created by FreeFallin ‪@FreeFallinTrees‬ He has a RU-vid channel where you can see his videos!
In this episode, I will discuss four different mechanical advantage systems which can be used by arborists and tree climbers to help themselves during a limb walk. The primary reason why such systems are in use is to aid a climber in moving along a limb, back towards their TIP (tie in point) while keeping as much of their body weight on the climb line as they can.
NOTE: I sort of didn't demonstrate the method for returning on a limb walk for the SCAM. You're supposed to pull on the strand that exits out of the top of one's climbing device until you've pulled out a few feet of rope, followed by pulling the slack out by pulling on the strand of rope exiting below your climbing device, such as a rope wrench.

You're still on the grass. Not sure why your hands are shaking so much.

I properly demonstrated each major option for mechanical advantage on a limb walk and your takeaway is that I was on the grass and my hands were shaking? I have a vitamin deficiency, my friend. It makes my hands shake. Sorry I disappointed you.

Also, I don't have a cameraman, so filming myself in a tree is not easy.

Awesome presentation and perfect explanation of these systems and their applications! Thank you so much for doing these! I'm actually working myself up to taking down a 60+ foot oak that's been leaning towards our house its got some big dead limbs on it, these will certainly come in handy

Thank you so much for thanking me! It means a lot! I'm really glad you enjoyed the video! Sounds like you should definitely get to that leaning Oak before all of its leaves come back and a storm hits! Right now is the best time to do it while the foliage is mostly gone still. Less obstacles and the limbs will weigh less!

What is the benefit of prussik vs just tying a knot on the main line (butterfly or farmers)?
@Knot-orious
@Knot-orious 3 месяца назад
The main reason is that the friction hitch is fully adjustable, so you can fine tune the length of your MA system on a limb walk. As you go in closer to your TIP, you may want to start pushing the hitch back up and, as you move farther away, and if you dont' want to go all the way back to where you originally tied the hitch, you can start sliding it away from your TIP, while keeping it as a 3:1 the entire time. But you're not wrong. You could absolutely use a midline loop knot such as the Alpine Butterfly or Farmer's Loop instead.

If it’s ok w you I’d like to reach put via email re an issue I’ve begun to have with my hitch on my Sterling 2-1 lanyard. Probably easiest to see in a picture I can send. Short version it’s gotten really hard to shorten w 1 hand. The hitch doesn’t want to slide up the lanyard anymore without using both hands. I have honestly forgotten the name of the hitch I have on it 🤦🏻.

Great At 4.00 you are going to lanyard in... then...
@Knot-orious
@Knot-orious 3 месяца назад
For all of these methods, a climber must secure themself with a lanyard prior to setting up one of these 3:1 systems for MA on a limb walk, and then they can remove the lanyard once it's set up. Similarly, before disassembling the system, they must first lanyard in.
