I've posted into many reactions to Limelight that my favorite line - probably in all of music - is this line... I was on the edge of my seat to hear what Alex was going to point to as the line that stood out to him. NOT disappointed! Neil, your respectful fans quietly acknowledge your tremendous lyrics and drum skills with voices raised that you won't hear and hands extended that you cannot shake. Wish we got to go for a ride...

Neil got his space invaded on the tour bus by a very demanding fan in the UK, this guy evaded security at the time and was like hey you owe me your time and person, Neil found it incredibly intimidating as the guy was intense, one thing you guys miss is that actually Alex's guitar work colours and makes this song so good, Alex has said that Limelight is one of his favourite solo's.

Limelight is one of those songs that is deceptively complex and only Rush can make it sound effortless. The continual 4/4 and 3/4 meter shifts throughout the song, and the occasional 2/4s and 7/4s in the chorus are amazing. Plus Alex's solo - there are no words. He takes the whammy bar to a new level. One of their best!

"Limelight" is THE song. It has everything, including Alex Lifeson's greatest guitar solo. No other rock band has ever approached such perfection as RUSH does on this track. Definitely one of those songs where you can't help but ask yourself: "Where in the heck did this song come from?" Neil Peart may claim to be an agnostic, but this is nothing less than the Voice of God speaking.
@davecole2561
@davecole2561 4 года назад
I completely agree. There is not one moment or heartbeat of this song that I do not love. Pure beauty and perfection. You always hear something new in it, too. There's more interest and brilliance in this track than I've heard in whole musical careers. It's astonishing, but then again, it's Rush.
@eliasswift2921

I would say Alex Lifeson's greatest guitar solo is a three way tie between La Villa Strangiato, Closer To The Heart, and 2112 (Presentation). But yeah, this one is great as well. Rush are such a complex band and it's so hard to play their music because nobody is talented enough.

Watching Neil do an interview reminds you why they call him the professor. His intelligence is off the scale. A lot of intellectuals are uncomfortable around people they don’t know. They tend to live in the small bubble of their mind, and a lot of times they don’t want to come out. Kind of like Alice in Wonderland wanting to stay down the rabbit hole. I have read five of his books and even though Limelight was written way before Ghost-Rider you can get a feeling how his mind works. I would not want his life though. I love Rush... one of my favourite ones is a sort of ballad by them of “ A Farewell to kings “Album.. it’s called “Closer to the heart” it was a minor radio hit for them and I believe it was the drummers mate that penned the song.. also I think there is a Christmas bells drum break on it... it’s got a great feel to it.

I have to say, watching you guys have the same reactions I had those many years ago was pretty cool. For me, Rush was a love at first sound experience. That was 7th grade back in the 80's and it was The Spirit of Radio. Keep doing what you're doing. Great job!

I KNOW you guys would LOVE Bytor and the Snowdog, off of their Fly By Night album. It's the first album that Neil recorded with the band....and they went for it with reckless abandon in this song. That guitar solo was heavily inspired by Allan Holdsworth's guitar solo on "In The Dead Of Night" by UK. Rush were huge fans of Bill Bruford and anything he did at the time. That debut UK album was released in 1978.

This is my most listened to Rush song. Or, I've heard it more than others. The lyrics are poetic and I can pretty much guarantee he didn't just slap it on paper and go with it. As a poet, I can say it isn't easy to make it sound so effortless. For me, the lyrics and music fit perfectly as if they were born together and share the same DNA. I say that about very few songs. I really, really enjoyed this video, guys. Good job! Keep it going! 🤟

It's the same for me Missy Frye. Limelight is just such a perfect marriage of words and music. I've heard it hundreds of times but always find something new and interesting to feast the ears on, and it never gets boring. It's intelligent, cerebral even, but also emotional, has soul, energy and a spine-chilling solo from our Alex. What a band...

@@davecole2561 I love intelligent songs. It's annoying when people don't pay attention to the lyrics and how they fit the music (or not in some cases). I guess I'm a music snob to some degree. But, I like the poppy feel-good stuff too. I just dumb down the senses for a while. ;)

I've played bass since I was about 11 (I'm 49 now) and I play Limelight every time I sit down to practice and warm up - God knows how many times I've played it - along with Tom Sawyer I'd say it's in the top 2 songs I've played the most since picking up the bass (and that's down to Geddy, the first album I ever got for my birthday that I asked for was Signals). Keep up the great work lads, love seeing that bell tell me I've got a new vid from you guys.

You would like another Canadian three piece band from this time period called Triumph, who were influenced by this radio-friendly version of Rush. Other than the guitarist, Triumph is not really known for the outstanding musicianship but features catchy highly-produced hard rock songs that are reminiscent of Boston in that regard. "Magic Power" is probably their most famous song. "Fight the Good Fight", "Lay it on the Line", and "Hold On" are others.

Additionally: So, just in case some people have never understood this (or, even, looked at it): There is a basic patterning (whether it was "designed" that way or just naturally ended-up flowing that way?? Who knows! ) to RUSH releases: They issued studio albums in a "trilogy" pattern (in threes) [save for: Test For Echo] and released Live albums every 4 studio releases (in a manner "documenting the period which just ended"...). Think about it: There are so many similarities in the albums which appear in these "groupings"/time-periods (and, yes: definitely definable elements which demonstrate "transition" or the move towards one, in the first and last albums of the segment (the two "outliers" - sort of - are: The first album and the early '90s period [Presto-Roll The Bones-Counterparts], where: there was so much difference in the individual albums and they felt "less together"/"less related" than the other periods). The debut album, with Rutsey, of course, is both lauded for and accused of being the "proto-Zeppelin" album and having weaker song-writing, etc. ...It, certainly, is an early album. a more "straight-ahead" rock album and barely implies (although, in small ways, it, still DOES!) the development which would take place in the band & the directions in which they would head. Fly By Night is hardly a "prog." album, though. It's VERY rock-y and while it leans toward the future, it is, really, Caress Of Steel where they, fully, "make the jump." - 2112, yes, had some echoes of the feeling on Caress... however: it was a leap forward and a discovery of their own voice, in a powerful way. It is clear that A Farewell To Kings and Hemispheres followed DIRECTLY from that [If you watch Beyond The Lighted Stage -their SUPERB documentary!!!!- You can clearly see how: 2112, both, saved, and started, their career and how important it was!!!!!!!-For them as well as for the audience they found and built, from it!]. The commercial peak was the early '80s and the trilogy of: Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, Signals. Signals, certainly, leans into the more keyboard-oriented sound which the late '80s would encompass ...but it is more similar to ts predecessors than what followed it. The next trio was: Grace Under Pressure [commonly: p/g], Power Windows and ended with: Hold Your Fire (another large "fan-splitter" - in opinions on it). Next came "the '90s" ...Rush leaned back to their roots and away from the keyboard-sounds, but, also, into the zeitgeist of the times [Presto, Roll The Bones and Counterparts]. each of those albums is quite different from the others and they share the least similarity with one-another, among "groupings." In the case of Test For Echo" that was, clearly "a reaction" to the (mainly unfavorable) response to the stripped-down, "first album-like"/"pseudo-'alterna-rock'" of Counterparts (which pissed-off a lot of people and, to many fans,...just "didn't make sense" - It is easier to understand and appreciate, NOW: Out-of-context (I.M.O.) ). The sad fact is that: Neil's tragedies (which, in effect, split the band - Vapor Trails was NEVER slated to "happen" and didn't "have to" ....It is a miracle that after those years, Neil was able to find himself, again and to find the meaning and love and passion for his kit and writing and bandmates; as he, eventually, did.) curtailed or crushed: whatever Test For Echo (which is a superb album, in case you haven't heard it!) was moving towards. ...I suppose there is enough similarity to include Test For Echo in with the final 3 albums (?? ...maybe) ...but I feel as if: T.F.E. stands by its lonesome. Vapor Trails-Snakes & Arrows and Clockwork Angels are the final trilogy. --Anyhow: in your commentary and parsing out thoughts and feelings: one would be intelligent in paying attention to these patterns and "subdural" ...elements (regarding RUSH's catalog). **thumbs up**

Wow! And I thought I was long winded. I doubt very much if anyone will read this. You gotta cut yourself off once you get to a certain length, mi amigo. While I do respect an opinion/comment that's more than a sentence or two long, it's been my experience that the average commenter will get bored VERY quickly. @@Drummingvulture Hey, DrummingVulture: Thanks. I appreciate the acknowledgement as well as the guidance, I have noticed this myself. I read it my friend...I always looked at it as being done in sets of 4 rather then trillogys...if you include the album of covers they did it does work out that way as well...but I never really looked at it the way you presented and I can see it that way as well now. Test for echo was a really great album.Before Id heard of Pearts tragic misfortunes I thought it might be their last and that they did a great job of combining the best ideas conceptually of the previous 3...the previous 2 being probably (while good) my least favorite Rush albums (aside frome their first record which I view as more of a historical document than an album Id listen to much).At the time I thought Test for echo would make for a triumphant ending to their legendary career and thankfully was wrong about that. Anyway...in my head I still see 4 sets of 4 seperated by live albums (until different twoard the end) but I can toataly see where your trilogy theory makes sense with a 4th change of direction album hinting at the future and the "meat" of the era being contained in 3 albums. (If I understood it right).Very cool. I wish more people would react to post signals Rush...theres such a vast array of outstanding material there every bit as good.

I first saw Rush on their Hemispheres Tour back when they had the white carpet on stage and no shoes. I've seen them probably 8 times over the years and yes the synthesizers make Rush's shows, you feel that thick sound from head to toe. One thing I think you guys missed is the innovation of Alex's lead on Limelight, those bends and dives are reminiscent of Xanadu with a unworldly sound. Keep up the good work, happy to see the young Gen into music that I blew out my ears to. The best Rush is the live stuff, All the World's a Stage and Exit stage left.
