Headcanon to fix the Iroan Games' flavor fail: because they were the *First* Games, Iroas did not yet see fit to grace them with his patronage and a mere material prize was awarded.

Good point Chief Superintendent. Also what is the canon regarding when Iroas Ascended into Godhood? What if the Iroan Games started by awarding medals and prize money and once Iroas ascended, they did not need the medals anymore? What if Iroas ascended by winning the games or by winning the games and refusing material rewards? There are lots of cool ways to make that work in our head canon.

1:55:44 Of note, all of the red 1/1 tokens that can't block are satyrs. Getting 2/2 haste satyrs from cards like Anax or Hero of the Revel is a very significant upgrade.

For Calix's -3, just treat whatever target enchantment you control as an Oblivion Ring. Marshall even says this. Typically when you exile something with something else you just put the target underneath the source of the effect on the battlefield. So if I -3 Calix targeting my Nyxborn Brute and my opponent's Loathsome Chimera, I just take the Loathsome Chimera and put it underneath my Nyxborn Brute. You can do this with multiple cards under the same enchantment.

purphuros's activated ability is also instant speed. IDK how well that factors into the rating but you can get a "gotcha" ambush if you flash in a boy and simultaneously animate purphuros.

I think there's a sneaky lifegain/drain/aristocrat subtheme in Orzhov with Heliod + Daxos + Kunoros and then some Lampad's etc.

I used underworld breach in a red white aggro deck and used it to reuse all my pump spells exiling my dead creatures so I could swing in for lethal. I did it twice in the same night.

1:13:00 The dream seems to be milling Aspect of the Lamprey or Iroa's Blessing with Mire Triton turn 2 then playing Herald for so much tempo. Its though to get back from that:D

On the topic of suggestions for the Limited Hall of Fame: I honestly haven't played nearly enough games of limited to properly compare since I had some large gaps between my years of playing Magic, but boy, do I remember the blow-outs that happened with Flame Fusillade. That card definitely gets my vote.

Ashioks erasure isnt just a counter spell though? I might be wrong but it hits targets on field also and then when they remove it puts it in there hand instead of just getting it back right?

RE Underworld Breach at 1:16:58, this is a limited finisher card. Great if you can get some stuff in there. Had the RG god thoughtseized out turn 2. Turn 5 can play this and bring out provided enough fodder in gy. Can fit in aggro decks as a way to ‘bring back’ your best hitters. Also gives cheap ways to escape huge escape cost cards?

Yes to Scarad God, that's practically unbeatable. Don't get me wrong Carnage Tyrant is still absurd but your opponent can still block it with a big pile of raw stats on their side or kill it with combat tricks

Anecdotal but I faced off against Nessian Boar and destroyed it. Kept chumping, using the draw to refuel, and using another creature to attack past it. When using the Boar don't always attack! 10/6 is a crazy blocker and when you can eat a few creatures that's the time to attack.

To attack past the Boar you needed a creature that could already evade it, and that wasn't summoning sick. You and your opponent did notice that it forces ALL available creatures to block it, correct? (Your final statement implies so, but the ease of avoiding losing all your creatures implies not.)

57:00 ish UB deck has a lot of tools to get rid of that enchantment, ie. shimmerwing chimera, stinging lionfish, Thassa, Sac as mentioned has 2 common and 1 uncommon way to sac it, white can either Intervene it or use Heliod though those are rare and mythic, black cannot do anything other than use lifelink, green can consistently outgain life lost with constellation trigger

The First Iroan Games is not necessarily a flavor fail. It could be that medals were awarded for the first version of the games, (the one referenced in the saga) and then subsequently removed for later versions of the games when the Arena Athlete participates.

1:23:40 No, you can't tap Gold tokens to pay for improvise (in the technical details, you have to activate the mana ability before actually paying the costs, and so the artifact won't be around to tap when you actually pay the cost). Same with Eldrazi Spawn/Scions and convoke, btw (cannot double-dip). But a reason not to reuse Gold tokens at the same time as improvise is that people would easily (and mistakenly) *think* that they would mega-combo.

Also, given that The First Iroan Games is the ONLY mention of Gold tokens in the set, and that there's still some space at the end of the Saga, I'm really surprised they didn't include reminder text for what the token does, for the probable-majority of players who will be unfamiliar with/fuzzy about them.

What happens if protean thalmaturge gets bounced. Is it still a copy of the creature? If you cast one with the stars on an opponent's best creature can you stack it so that protean thalmaturge copies that creature before it becomes an enchantment?

No and no, unfortunately. When a card leaves the battlefield, all abilities impacting it stop doing so The one with the Stars will not work since the effect of an aura does not go on the stack. Once the enchantment is in play, it's effect happens immediately

Elspeth honestly seems a bit lackluster to me without escape. 1/1 dudes don't reeeeally do that much, and she only generates a handful. Maybe she's great because of escape, but the abilities just seem kinda meh.

I agree. I just do not see how this card is very good. Even the escape cost is a bit steep, and if she gets exiled from the graveyard, before she escapes, and there are a lot of ways to exile cards from graveyards in this set, its going to feel bad.

I agree with you, and I'm not even very thrilled about escape part. White is not one of the escape colors and without support, four cards from the GY can be hard to come by even once some games

I was also unimpressed at first but -1 seems surprisingly strong. It's not just 4 damage per activation since it allows your smaller creature to attack through blockers. If they attack you back to kill Espeth you get to swing with the whole team and (probably) either kill them or force them into chumpblock mode. Then when you get to Escaping her the opponent will have a hard time defending from your +2/+1 creatures.

I choose to look at the iroan games medal inconsistency as a Jim Thorpe callout. Where now in the posthumous saga he finally has his medal. For the uninformed Jim Thorpe was arguably the best all around athlete of any era and was the sole person stripped of gold medals for amateur violations for ~100 dollars of minor league baseball pay and it was enforced outside the range of the rules due to racism of the era and despite appeals the 2 gold medals and at the time absurdly crazy world record for the decathalon weren't recognized until decades past his death. Deep take.

love these set reviews. appreciate it. Also, 2:05:19 , I really don't get why Kroxa has a double negative. Why not just say "then each opponent who discards a land card this way loses 3 life" instead of "...didn't discard a nonland...". It's kinda blowing my mind they did this lol

These are different effects. With the wording we have now the opponent takes 3dmg if they don't have any cards in hand. With your wording this wouldn't be the case.

The minor gods aren't in this set because 15 gods in one set are apparently too many. So we really only got 7 in total, one of which doesn't show up in limited.

Heliod is a true bomb. Heliod should not be one of the lowest rated white rare/mythics. It should be the top white card and one of the top cards in the set. To make it really good you need white mana sources and creatures. Not hard to achieve. You can race almost any board with 2 creatures. Will Heliod always be a 5/5? Nope. Rarely. That isn't a terrible thing either. It further reduces the ways to deal with it. If Heliod isn't a 5/5 creature it can't be exiled by things that exile creatures or given -x/-x. Better as a creature? Yes. The Heliod rating is certainly the biggest mistake you made in this review.

PolyK at A(100% an A+ card) and not the best card in the set, or AT LEAST 2nd best card, has got to be wrong...I've faced it twice so far and the card is just unbeatable...it generally kills two creatures and then comes back and kills two more and stays around as a 4/4 or bigger...basically, if it escapes you're not winning that game...refuse to play any more sealed of this format, already tired of losing to that stupid card.....

I think Dalakos is one of the worst rares in the set. There's not any relevant artifacts, and especially no equipment worth pushing for him.

The art in Magic has gone downhill fast. Every set since Magic Origins has the same bland artstyle. Comparing the art in this set to original Theros really exposes that.

@@Frommerman He is an incredible artist, but his artstyle is more similar to sets before Magic Origins than after. I'm not denying that there is good art in the newer sets, just that the overall art direction is of poorer quality.

@@williamtessmer8123 All visual products do. I don't like the visuals. I think they're consistently producing more literal and over-descriptive versions of art for cards that would have been done much differently 10 years ago, when the art style was more to my liking.
