Lipoprotein a? What's that!

LDL causes atherosclerosis. That’s a fact. We now have drugs that can wipe LDL out of the blood, but is that the end of history? Probably not. There are other causal lipids (lipoproteins) than cause atherosclerosis. The next target for therapy is probably gonna be Lipoprotein (a). So here is the summary of what we know about Lpa and how to manage it.

1:58 Structure of Lpa
3:36 Link of Lpa to CVD
4:52 Risk or cause?
5:37 Lpa and aortic stenosis
6:35 How does it injure valves and vessels?
7:14 Normal blood levels
8:45 How to treat elevated Lpa

LP(a) is a risk factor, not an inevitable sentence to CVD. Don't smoke, stay active, maintain a normal weight, and eat a healthy diet. Try to achieve an optimal (not "normal") level of LDL if your LP(a) is elevated. Be concerned but not paralyzed!

My wife her lipoprotein A is 402 and her hs-crp is 19.4 all her doctors did was give crestor 10 mg. Trying to get her on lipoprotein apheresis but the doctor dont know because her ldl is 45 on statin. Shes also pre diabetic which adds To the problem

Very clear and complete. Love it. Started PCSK9 4 months ago, due to stent , high cholesterol and high LPa, which decreased from 85 to 69 mg/dl.

Thank you for the infor. My lipids (LDL, HDL, TG, total cholesterol) are all within normal limits without any meds but lipoprotein a is 160 and HS CRP is >10. Should I be worried about the numbers?

How come there are some elderly patients who have had a LIFETIME of very high levels of Lp(a) and those same humans have perfectly clean coronary arteries (i.e. ZERO plaque) on their coronary angiograms and pristine aortic valves on their CT scans?
@CardioBuzz
@CardioBuzz Год назад
Life would have been easier if atherosclerosis had just one direct cause. Unfortunately it is more complex than that. LDL and Lp(a) are causal but lifestyle is, still, responsible for 80% of atherosclerotic disease. Smoking, exercise, diet, diabetes, and blood pressure can significantly modulate the disease process and progression.

yes. lp(a) isn't the cause.
@SET12DSP
@SET12DSP 11 месяцев назад
@JMK-vo8pv Let's add on the fact that it can be reversed as my CAC coronary artery calcium score has gone from 660 to 458. This was done with the Linus Pauling Heart Protocol. Pauling uses Lysine and Proline amino acid supplements to bind Lp-a in the blood when this happens the Lp-a is neutralized.
@SET12DSP

@@Notme-tq4xsLp-a is a substitute for vitamin C, it the first responder to a vitamin C deficient artery sticking to exposed Lysine and Proline strands.

Hello - great update here. Back 10+ yrs ago couple studies showed L-carnitine supplement and flax seeds can lower LPa by ~ 5 to 30%. Please any new studies or just your scientific thinking on any benefits of this two compounds>. Thank you
@CardioBuzz
@CardioBuzz 5 месяцев назад
Yes, L-Carnitine, in small studies, reduced Lp(a) but without effects on cardiovascular outcomes. Besides, animal studies suggested that L-carnitine accelerated atherosclerosis!

Could you please refer me to ANY RCT's that PROVE a CAUSAL relationship between Lp(a) levels and cardiovascular disease? From what I can find in the literature, the ONLY studies on Lp(a) and CVD are purely associational and, as we know, association/correlation does NOT inform on CAUSATION.
@CardioBuzz
@CardioBuzz Год назад
Thanks for your question. There is a general consensus that causation can be established through Mendelian randomization studies. Here is an example of one of these randomization studies. Best regards

Hi David! I can't give comments on individual situations but we know that the heritability of Lp(a) is very high, exceeding 90%

Had a major heart attack was life flighted from one hospital ro another had 2 stents. Im 54 and am nervous as the surgeon said that my lifestyle is what he prescribes to his patients. I jyst dont want to be on all of these pills a year from now espexially the statin😭

Eating carbohydrates and being overweight causes atherosclerosis, but doctors don't know that. Keto diet is the only thing that helps.

It says very LOW levels of lpa increases the risk of Diabetes. Is it the LOW OR HIGH LEVELS of lp a ,causes diabetes risk and what is the mechanism. Thanks
@CardioBuzz

Inverse relation: low Lp(a) is associated with increased risk of diabetes. The mechanism is unclear.
