Hi Painting Friends! This video is a bit different from my tutorials. Because I'll be traveling a lot next year, I wanted to find a professional quality acrylic paint to use for my fine art pieces on the road. I purchased this set of Liquitex heavy body acrylic paints and created a painting with them. During the painting process, I review the product and compare it to other acrylic paints I've used in the past. Enjoy!
You can buy this acrylic paint set here using my Amazon Associate Link: amzn.to/2XJmObX

I paint with liquitex and golden heavy body paints always. On the back of the tube it will show that it’s either opaque or transparent. You will always have to add some white to your yellow to make it opaque or paint that portion white first (to cover the blue) let it dry, then apply your yellow. I would suggest adding burnt sienna, cad yellow, yellow oxide, cad red and burnt umber to your set. I also have to have their transparent mixing white....perfect for smoke, clouds and for atmospheric perspective. I’m glad your enjoying the heavy body paints and can’t wait to see what you will have in store for us during your travels.

thanks for the detailed comment, Mannette! I did grab some burnt sienna, cad yellow, and burnt umber. I am going to get a few more colors of this brand in the next few weeks. :). Great plan for adding white then yellow!

Thank you, very nice review! My experience was similar, I paint thin so I initially avoided the Liquitex heavy body paints, as I thought they would be thick, maybe sticky and hard to push around. But when I tried them, I was very surprised to see that they are very nice to manipulate, not pasty at all, and easy to spread also for thin applications! With regards to your yellow, Hansa is supposed to be transparent, I think. When I use the Cadmium yellow, it covers very well.
@ThePaintingStoof
@ThePaintingStoof 3 года назад
Thanks very much for your comment Francesco! I do need to get cadmium yellow still but I think you are right it should be a bit more opaque than hansa. Happy painting! 🙂

Again, good review. Given how old thus is - no doubt the hostess has learned that it is best to mix titanium white with yellow for the first layer, maybe two - the just a yellow layer. Acrylics can't hold as much pigment in general, so adding titanium white to some colors on first layer cuts down on needed layers.

The best way to get the yellow bright and have better opacity is to first paint the area with titanium white. Let it dry. When you put the yellow over it, it is very bright and much more opaque.

(When dealing with the lines showing up underneath your yellow, I’d say if using these and it your normal oils, to do your original sketch with a much less vibrant color to start with. Your painting is amazing btw! I found some of the liquitex professional heavy body (emerald green) at a mighty dollar store here for $1! It wasn’t expired! 😂 it was likely overstock from wherever they get their supplies! Needless to say I jumped on it! 😂

@Misty Dawn pointing out that i truly learned here something from Steph (or painting STOOF, sorry for getting in a typing error) is no point?! I paint now for decades and did NOT know about that fact...i truly believed that a certain type if colour, oils acrylics etc. has a irrevocable thickness to it. And I just wanted to thank her for telling me. Thats all. Be happy that YOU knew about that fact and let me please, even in the future, thank her even for things that are obvious to you 😉

In acrylics, yellow only paints over white (I am quoting Artist Ginger Cook). Just put a smooth coat of white wherever you want yellow and then 1 to 2 thin coats of yellow and you will have a beautiful smooth bright result. I enjoy your tutorials and thank you for sharing your talent.

Thanks very much! I have been painting for 18 years so I have a pretty good idea of how much paint I need in each color before I start, but sometimes I still waste paint by putting too much of a color on my palette. you can put extra paint in small bags or jars if you really put too much on the palette- I do this sometimes with oil paint.

Great painting and demo. I think the problem with your yellow is that it's Cadmium Yellow Hue, not single pigment, which uses transparent pigments. Hope you like their Cadmium Yellow as much as I do. Gorgeous painting! That blue is stunning, and that was a great review. How are you liking your Liquitex Heavy Body for plein air? I use them along with a wet palette, a fine mister/atomizer every few minutes, and a touch of Golden retarder for skies. My current favorite color is yellow oxide. It's more pungent than Yellow ochre and keeps my landscapes nice and warm. I also love cobalt teal for that area just above the horizon on a clear day.

@@ThePaintingStoof Yes, after my comment I went and watched you paint outdoors, in CO I believe. Very nice work you do, and great job on your vid production! I Paint real fast as well, but sometimes need help when it's hot/breezy. The Golden retarder is super nice - just a tiny bit goes a long way. I just got some liquitex slow drying medium, which I'm looking forward to checking out as well. Across the board though, the wet palette and an atomizer have made the biggest difference, and have made plein air a much more relaxing experience.
