I've learned (especially in music vids) to not always cut on the beat...to use discretion because just as with the overuse of slomo, the edit can become predictiable and unintentionally bore/lose your audience. But yes, tools such as this can work wonders when used wisely! Thanks for the vid!! P.S. Also, for a more "human" feel, you can tap out your beats in real time with markers and catch the natural rhythms other than just the peaks ( audio peaks don't always corelate with our visions' "sense" of rhythm haha) Peace.
Can you offset the markers a little? As a music editor who started back with mag and 1/4", I learnt very quickly that a "beat" has a length to it. Most tempo identification software finds the loudest part of the beat, but if you edit your picture to the front of the beat, normally just before the loudest, or even the tiniest fraction earlier, then you don't get that slightly laggy feeling you have here - it becomes more musical. The same with music editing. When I first edited digitally, so long ago now, I noticed my edits were in time but didn't sound so nice as when I edited manually with tape, razor blade, and sticky tape. Thinking about how I edited, I realised that when I rocked the tape back and forth over the play head of the tape machine, what I was listening for was the beginning of the beat - that tiniest ramp up. Editing using waveform, I went for the obvious peak, and it wasn't as good. So, nudging the music that tiniest fraction later might make it much better.
Same for me. Editing on 1/4 was good prep. The visual impact has a different time to register in the brain than the audio. Resolve does make it rather easy, since you can just mark the picture cut and shift it slightly, or shift the audio instead. They use the same keys as PT does too for frame shift. "," and "." . Now they just need to give the Fairlight page its own keymap, and I'd be a lot happier using that for sound editing. Interesting script. Neat for picture editors. Casie, all my life I've kept hearing from picture editors that cutting on the beat is not a great idea, and so far I've found they're usually right. But it's a start :) .
Very good point! It is in deed to some extend a matter of taste if you want to offset the markers a tiny bit. At the top of my feature request list I actually have to implement a little extra tool to shift markers. Until then, your best option is probably to create timeline markers and then move the song itself a bit (clip markers will move with the song, but timeline markers won't).
You can ofcourse use it as it is now and when you matched the markers with the cuts: move the audio track a few frames, then all the cuts are the same distance from the marked peak. It's almost the same effort as dailing in an option to do it automatically 🤷♂️
Ha! This is crazy. I'm putting together a video to help remember our Yorkie that we had to say goodbye to yesterday and I always struggle with laying music into my edits. I thought to myself someone has to have a way to be able to line up video clips with beats to music and when I landed on RU-vid, there was this video in my suggestion list. This is a life saver for me as I have zero music talents and have a very hard time leveraging music in my videos. Great tip and thanks.
It doesnt really work for me, it marks the beats pretty incorrectly. Before I bought it the developer replied immediately after purchased he stopped. I would advise against purchasing it.
@@DanBernard317 I dont buy this explanation because the markers generated by the script not only looks off but they also sound off and I have to manually mark them. Also he says that you shouldnt care where the marker is but that the markers are evenly distributed. That's absurd, I need the marker at the beat.
the question is: Why Blackmagic didn't put that feature into the Resolve Studio yet? Why we need to pay extra 15-20% of the whole Resolve soft value just for one feature only?
Hey Casey, this has been something that I have been using for about 2 months. It is unbelievable. I have been hanging on to Adobe Audition to do just this. I am thinking about canceling everything but photoshop and lightroom. Fire, fire, fire
I used to do a lot of music videos and the click wave that you showed at the end - if it works as it looks like it works that would have been a really timesaver. Part of the older music videos was preparing a lip sync track for bands to play along with. But they all required a decent count in, so players could start together - especially drummers. So I would have to create a count in, which of course had to be at the tempo and be before the song starts - So what I used to do is tap the count on a desktop with a mic on it. Then check it against the waveform and grab two bars - cut it and paste it into a leader area in the edit. When I first starting do that it was in audio programs, but eventually we would build the pre - shooting tracks on an ipad with a really large SMPTE timecode playing to which an assistant on set would hold it up and all the cameras would catch the Timecode - then the count in would come on and all the cameras would shoot the video. Then later I could line up all the sync on the camera by matching the recorded playback to the cameras shot of the SMPTE captured before countdown. Anyway - just creating that count in was time consuming. Then when in edit - I would count and tap my foot and put markers down as a guide for switching on the beat. So this in my opinion, is a really great tool, if it works as your demo of it shows. Nice find Casey.
The only reason I have not bought it is that last time I bought a big plugin (voice isolation) the same functionality can with the next DR upgrade. It is a tough call, if I spend 50$ today it is likely to be in 18.5 beta 4, but if I don’t maybe it never comes…
*gasp* I just did a desperation YT search for "song editing in fairlight" since I'm gonna have to do exactly this, cutting a song up and trying to make it sound seamless with 0 audio knowledge and this brings a tear to my eye.
Here is a way to get a similar effect without paying a single dime. Find the BPM of your song and use a click generator for the entire duration of the song, when you just align the clips you can pretty much see the beats and do whatever you wish. I wouldn't pay 50$ for this. Edit: you can double or halve the BPMs if you want 1/2 or 1/8 which is helpful
I just put the song in, make sure the timeline is selected (to mark timeline), hit play and tap the m key to the beat or places in the song which make the right cut. Might require a bit of rhythm and timing but works well enough to then micro adjust.
I usually edit music videos with multicam. However this is VERY interesting! I will try to cut the multicam clip as usual and then use these markers as perfect waypoints for the beats! I would imagine that this would be a very nice workflow, thank you!
I have come accross this at just the right time. I have just put together some slide shows of my daughters mini break with her daughters and as you know picture slide shows are silent but not anymore. I had been struggling along trying to get the free background sounds to fit but not anymore. Thank you
Nice, BM buy the company and include it in the next beta. In addition, give us a remix feature like Premiere. Then I’ll send someone in Australia a big kiss😮
this is awesome! i still wish there was a way to drag clips onto the timeline and automatically have them cut to the markers...but this definitely helps!
Fair light is great… but I still take it over to Logic. One day I’ll stay in the program. I’m usually writing music for whatever I edit, so it’s not quite there yet
Thanks for the video! It got me up and running in seconds. But... I was really excited about it so I quickly installed it and tested a few songs, but I'm afraid I'm not having much luck with it. Maybe it works better with particular songs, but I hope it gets some updates in the future.
Hi Alex, as any artificial intelligence, BeatEdit is not always 100% accurate, but in the majority of cases it works very well. Hence, I wonder if it is just a matter of using it the right way. Here is a list of the things that might go wrong and possible workarounds: Timeline Frame Rate Could it be that your timeline has a different frame rate than the project? If so, please try to set the frame rate in the project settings to the same frame rate that your timeline has, before you create the markers. Background: Resolve has a very annoying limitation in its scripting API - scripts like BeatEdit cannot figure out what frame rate a timeline has. Therefore, if it is not the same frame rate as the one of the project, the markers will be placed at the wrong frames. It would be very interesting to hear if only the markers are at the wrong locations or if also the clicks sound off. If the beat clicks are also off, it is not the frame rate, but if the clicks sound good, the frame rate is most likely the issue. Beats very close to, but not at peaks If your issue is that the beats are not exactly at the peaks of the waveform, see this tutorial for an explanation: mamoworld.com/tutorials/no-beats-are-not-peaks To judge the quality of the predicted beats, I highly recommend to listen to the beat click audio generated by BeatEdit and check if these sound in sync with the music. This is much more reliable than checking if the markers line up with the waveform. Live music and other music with tempo changes If you work with music that was performed live (and without a metronome) the tempo is often changing a little bit over time. In these cases, you need to disable the “quantize” option of BeatEdit, which is enabled by default. Quantization makes sure that all beats have exactly the same distance, which usually makes the result even more accurate, but does not make sense, if the tempo of the song changes over time. Classical music and other music where the rhythm is not very prominent Music that has no drums or other prominent peaks is a challenge for every beat detector. For these kinds of songs, BeatEdit will often still predict the correct beats, but sometimes it does not find the correct beats. If the results are bad, first check if they improve if you disable quantization. If this does not help, not that even if the beats are not correct, BeatEdit will still place the markers at intense or “rhythmically relevant” points of the music. So if your goal is to place cuts that harmonize with the music, the markers can still be useful, despite not being the correct beats in the strict musical sense. If you are not sure, what the issue might be in your case, you can also send me a song (best in an aescripts support ticket) and I can take a look at it and check what is going wrong. Cheers, Mathias
This was a great sales job. I knew this was a promoted video before watching it, I was skeptical AND I don't really need this. I ST|ILL want to buy it (and probably will this fall when I have the flimsiest excuse to do so). Whatever they paid for this video, they got a good deal. Congratulations to both BeatEdit and Casey!
Honestly, i think this should just be implemented by DaVinci itself! For me this is just a normal feature a video edit software should provide! I mean it´s 2024!!! Why the he** such an rudimentary feature is not a standart? I cant believe it!!
Hey Casey and anyone else that might be able to help, I chose 'Create Clip Markers' but the clip markers aren't matching up with the beats. How can I fix this?
The iPad version does not support third party scripts, unfortunately. Please submit a feature request to BlackMagic Design to add support for scripting. The more people request it, the more likely they will implement it. :-)
I'm really looking forward to using this. I've been using the Premiere BeatEdit plugin for quite a while and it's life changing! I'm curious how they compare with each other. It looks like the Resolve version gives different colored markers for each beat of the measure, this is a feature not found in the Premiere verison. I assume you can then go in and delete all the markers of a certain color so you are left with only the first beat of each measure, which helps tremendously with the music edits. The Premiere version allows you to make markers every x number of beats. Fantastic videos Mr Faris, you almost singlehandedly helped me switch from Premiere to DaVinci Resolve. Your videos are the first I look for when trying to learn something new.
You are right that BeatEdit for Premiere Pro and Resolve are quite different. The beat detector working in the background is identical, but the user interface and the features on top of that are very different, since Resolve and Premiere are actually very different. But good news for you: Our most recent update BeatEdit for Pr 2.2 (published a few weeks ago) also has the colored markers now :-) It is a free update for all users of BeatEdit V2 for Premiere Pro.
There is probably no rule without an exception. But usually, you want your cuts to go unnoticed,, since the viewer should focus on the story and not on cuts. And a good way to "hide" the cuts is to make them happen at beats. Sometimes it is also a good idea to let key actions happen in sync with the beats.
Wow, this is amazing, it seems that this script was developed for me as a composer and music producer 🎉 Slicing audio has been used for audio looping for a while now, the same principle for setting markers on the detected beats in Resolve is wonderful! Can you also set a threshold to somewhat control the accuracy of how beats are detected? Subscribing to your channel has been worth it many times ☺Thanks Casey!
can you do a video on how to bring up the vibrance of a clip and remove the reds in skin tone. I'm trying to edit a forest clip and as im bring up the vibrance the persons skin tones start to become really red. How can I correct that as a beginner color editor.
Casey, I would love to see your thoughts or a comparison with the new logic and Final Cut for iPad The one thing fcp has is love drawings with Apple Pencil…maybe show how to do the same effect in resolve?
I tried this out today, but for some reason it doesn't work at all for me. Like, the script is installed just fine, it is processing my songs, and the BPM detection seems to be fairly correct. but the beats drawn onto the clip are just completely off. Out of 4 songs i tried, only one sort of got the beat correct, for the other 3 it was a completely random pattern that had nothing to do with the actual beat of the song. So it is entirely unusable for me. Anyone else had this problem, and maybe a solution to it?
I just tried to create Beat Click audio - placed it on the timeline as well and it is out of sync with the track and the clip markers - what on earth am I doing wrong?!
This way of editing is just how hobby users do… from sounddepartment view it’s just the most poor sub consumer level… a Sounddesigner Never will touch any footage or cut… you produce this way plastic sound… works but it’s just lowest level to work in Fairlight.
Why doesn't Davinci Resolve have something like this included? Seems like something a loooot of creators would really use often. Just thinking out loud.
Beats are not exactly at the peaks of the waveform. As a rule of thumb, trust your ear and not your eye. If the click sounds, which BeatEdit can generate, sound like they fit to the music, then the beats are correct.
Is there a way to append a new video clip to the video timeline? (with the shortcut and not drag and drop). It'll always drop at the end of the music timeline instead of the video timeline. That's where FCPX stands out for me, user friendly.
Hi. I was curious if DaVinci will allow you to set your in or out points of your clips like Premeire Pro does? Also, will DaVinci automatically put clips to the markers from Beat Edit through a sequence selection tool similar to Premeire. Seems like a lot more steps with DaVinci. I use both DaVinci and premiere. Thanks
Casey question something I keep running into is when I'm putting together shorts for clients and I pick a song that I like but is only like 40 seconds long but have 55 seconds of footage how can I splice the same song to match the last 10 seconds of video ... if I could do a zoom or speak to you That would be huge , either way I'm happy with whatever advice you can give me.
@@CaseyFaris Ok yea just watched it like 3 times back to back to make sure I got it and that actually worked really well for me :). Your the best man thanks so much for getting back to me.
The cut page shows timeline markers, but no clip markers. Hence, make sure to use timeline markers (or the click sound track) if you want to use it with the cut page.
Hey Casey, do you know off there is a way to see the BeatEdit clip markers on the Cut Page? They show up magnificently on the Edit Page. But can't find a way to see them on the iPad or desktop Cut page. Can you help a fella out, or is it a no-go?
As far as I know, the cut page only shows timeline markers and not clip markers. So an easy workaround would be to create timeline markers (with the drawback that those markers don't move with the audio clip).
Interesting thought! It is also a lower case b, but I think ours looks much more like a musical note. Dre also does not have the "circle with a corner" shape, we have in the background of all our tool icons. :-)
