Demo'ing Demos #2 is all about New Corporation's Japanese 2D action platforming masterpiece The Adventure of Little Ralph. This game had several interesting demos before its final release, including a very special one called "Hero Hero-kun to Ralph no Daibouken." I guess you could say it's the "hidden gem demo" to a hidden gem game. This video also looks at some of the marketing of the game, and at the end there's a brief run down of what happened to key staff who worked at New. If you're a Little Ralph fan, you should love it.

I picked up LR in 2018 for what is tied for the most I've paid for a video game at $350 in 8/10 condition. The other game to demand this premium was Pocky & Rocky w. Becky for GBA. They were massive purchases to me at the time, even though I've been collecting for 15+years by then. I'm glad i picked it up then as I'm positive i never would've been able to swing that as i got married later that year. I discovered LR through your channel years before and it was always a game i wanted to get being a huge PSX collector. Thanks for introducing me to this gem as it's one of my favorite games on the platform to this day (fave being SotN).

Hey, I'm glad you picked that up, as well as Pocky & Rocky w/Becky...I've regretted sitting on the fence for that one for like two decades now, prices are insane, even in Japan! Great choice for your favorite PS1 game--SotN was a literal game changer for me, got me interested in Castlevania as well as non-RPGs on the PS1 at the time and it's definitely a top ten of any platform in my opinion. And I think the most important thing to say is congrats on getting married, even if it was a while ago now!

@@ImportGamingFTW thank you so much!! I went back and watched your episode on PlayPlay too, great intro into what's sure to be a great video series! Left my thoughts on that one too. SotN was game changer for me too, first Castlevania i actually liked and made me go back and check out Super Metroid and Rondo of Blood. I was all RPG back then too and it rekindled my love for good side scrollers (and also was the reason I eventually bought Valkyrie Profile, another personal fave)

What an awesome insight the demos here contain. Even if they're short, they put out interesting new ways to keep us players hooked before the final release. Funny to think this is kinda closer to the model devs go with these days, sort of. Would've brought some life in earlier builds before the final release.

Little Ralph was so much fun! Even though it's straightforward (except for the fighting game-style bosses), it still spanks a lot of modern indie games that just want to be retro-style sidescrollers. I have no idea what is true of just.... so many legit retro games. I suspect it's just a different state-of-mind thing; people back then were trying their hardest and pushing their skills to the limit to stand out with their 2D craft, whereas indies now just want to rip off the same 4-5 SNES games constantly and just do an okay-enough job :/ That's why I'm looking forward to Clockwork Aquario's release later this year instead of any indie sidescroller - a legit, lost game from Westone is bound to be something special compared to all of those modern faux-retro titles! Shmuplations interview is really insightful - the fact that they were trying to emulate stuff like Quarter's pacing and "beautiful of its patterns" is the kind of detail modern devs just wouldn't do. I also really, REALLY *loved* the line: "Games are fun because _they are games._ It’s a battle of wits, a push and pull between the player and the software… or in other words, gameplay" --- HOLY SHIT, I WANT TO SHOVE THAT QUOTE INTO EVERY GAME JOURNALISTS' FACE NOWADAYS. I've been so sick of them whining on and on about "narrative" and championing cutscenes when AAA games play like absolute turds _for years now_ and I honestly don't think I've ever seen a game developer state _so eloquently_ why that's stupid and do such a great job summing up why games should not be looked at like freakin' movies or, ugh, books. God, that quote is amazing. Thanks, Little Ralph devs! And thanks, Jimmy, for linking that interview. This was an awesome deep dive on some cool supplemental features for such a sweet little game. Also, thanks for the warning on import PS1 titles; I've noticed them climbing in price over the past year and it sucks. I suspect RPGs are still cheap because they're worse bets for import gamers to check out thanks to language barrier, so everything else is getting a bump.... yeah, that blows. I REALLY don't want to have to fork over $50-70 for GunGage, but dammit, I know I probably will eventually. Or just get Cybernetics Empire or Spriggan for $10 INSTEAD and pretend it's as good as GunGage before people discover those ones and jack the price up on them too... :P
@ImportGamingFTW
@ImportGamingFTW 3 года назад
While I'm a guy who has enjoyed many an RPG in his time, where narrative is the main driving factor for a player to slog through the game, I totally get what you mean about modern games/journalism. There's a lot of pretension that just doesn't really sit well with me, which is probably why I don't pay those kinds of things much attention anymore. I also agree with the indie scene--I'm all for people going outside the big business, "AAA" model. It really produces some amazing games, and some of my absolute favorites were indie titles produced ten years ago or so. But it's all become a bit diluted, a bit "trendy" now, it seems...kind of like RU-vid and the content, quantity and quality of the videos produced on the platform. You get real gems like Shovel Knight here and there, but a lot games that pay homage to older games seem like they lack the "soul" of many of the classics...while it was a detriment to the health of those programming them, the time, memory and hardware constraints really produced magic. Good luck getting Gungage--that's one I had as a kid, great soundtrack, and fantastic game once you get used to the controls!
@barry-allenthe-flash8396
@barry-allenthe-flash8396 3 года назад
Thanks, man. I actually have my eBay page open in another tab right now, considering if I should nab something. Maybe today's the day I pull the trigger on Gungage! Y'know, I gotta say, I wasn't even thinking about RPGs when I was ragging on games journalism, lol. That's totally understandable in those cases! I was thinking more like third-and-first person action games now; they just don't care about the gameplay. AT ALL. Like those Wolfenstein reboots from Machine Games? The ones that should just be balls-to-the-wall, giant beefy Jewish supersoldier BJ Blazkowicz dual-wielding rocket launchers while blowing apart robot Nazis on the Moon? But actually aren't that _at all?_ The ones that have bad stealth and demand you pick up ammo clips from the floor manually, and star a depressed guy surrounded by a bunch of idiots who won't shut the hell up and is constantly forcing you into conversation scenes while only _rarely_ breaking that up so you can fight a robot dog or something? Good lord, when I watched the Giant Bomb Quick Look of that second one - the last time I think I watched anything of theirs - and one of their guys just wandered around the town _listening into the conversations Nazis were having_ while heaping praise blindly upon the game _for such great world-building,_ I was losing my mind. It doesn't matter what game does it for people, or from what outlet (Lord knows people hate on IGN and Eurogamer and plenty more because that's where they've had the same kind of moment); once you see stuff like that, it really opens up your eyes to just how often it happens. If a AAA game has a lot of walk-and-talk moments, they love it. Doesn't matter if there are broken stealth systems, shoddy gunplay or melee combat, half-baked platforming & traversal, or an out-of-whack ratio of walking around locations to _actually doing something,_ journalists are blind to that. In fact, they seem to *prefer* it that way. The less they have to engage with a game, the better. They just want those cutscenes! Well, I guess that's why people nowadays mostly just turn to RU-vidrs and Twitch streamers for game coverage. Games journalism is truly maddening. Which is why I so easily slip into ranting, - uh, my bad about that btw :P I gotta stop doing this.... I promise I *will* stop doing this. Thanks for giving me a space to vent this time though; clearly, it's kind of a pet peeve, lol.

I don't think I even mentioned it in the old video...but that's one I REALLY want to redo and give it like a 30 minute video treatment. Little Ralph is a tough game...if you want to 1CC, speedrun or high score it. Other than that, it's not so bad since continues are infinite--I hope you'll enjoy it if you play it again! The best kind of demos are the ones that have unique content to the released version as it makes them interesting for many reasons even many years later they become interesting to play to see all the changes between beta and release. One thing i'd really love to know if there are any PS1 demo disks with unique pocketstation demo stuff? as that's the current focus of my Jpn PS1 collection at the moment i love finding pocketstation compatible game stuff been trying to get as many titles as i can find before they get too hard to get hold of. Have to agree though PS1 is starting to get unpleasantly expensive, hell some PS1 games are so obscure that they are next to impossible to find copies of but when you do find them they always seem to have a painful pricetag. RU-vid is a double edged sword, on one hand it lets people know about the obscure stuff but also causes the prices to spike too once they become well known. Still elated though that by some miracle i was able to find a sealed first print of mirano no arubeit collection sat on ebay of all places & nobody noticed it. Was after that for so long, you can bet your ass i hit buy in now in a nanosecond lol. No loner sealed though as i bought it to play i love the gameplay minigame loop of life sim & minigames.
@ImportGamingFTW
@ImportGamingFTW 3 года назад
You found Mirano sealed? Nice--I did see that a lot of the games that have gotten pricey in Japan are still cheap on ebay (usually European sellers). I'll have to give it a deep look sometime. I've been trying to get Mirano for the past year especially, and each time I find one on Mercari, it goes for pretty cheap...and because it's listed for cheap, it usually gets bought up quickly and I'm too late! I'll keep an eye out for PocketStation stuff, there's bound to be something in a Play Play disc somewhere.
@importaku
@importaku 3 года назад
@@ImportGamingFTW Hope you can find a decent priced copy as i'd love to see you review mirano sometime, i like it a lot the minigames are really fun and the sprite animation is gorgeous. Found my copy by total accident i saw a sealed psone books version going on ebay but the guy wanted like $600 and i was like screw that so i went searching across the net and ended up seeing a pic on google images of a sealed copy and when i saw where the image came from it was ebay and wildly the auction was still active it was listed in a weird way that i don't think anyone found it. Had a BIN of £110 which i instantly jumped on especially as it was flawless not even a hint of sun fade, not cheap but finding a sealed first print was insanely rare. Used up all my luck now lol, wish i could find a mint copy of tokyo wakusei planetokio i want that game so bad but it's not easy to find and with it been on multiple disks the chance of one of the disks been wrecked is quite high.
