Mihawk has PRESENCE. You immediately buy in to him being the greatest swordfighter alive and he knows it. The actor did an amazing job of really bringing that nonchalant confidence. Even knowing Zoro had main character immunity and the story arc, I still felt worried for him going up against Mihawk.
Which sucks because the main cast is bad actors.they look the part but dont act the part. I think anime characters should be conveyed in real life if done right

I was on the team that built the sets, and having Internet Jesus approve has me screaming (happily)! I've been a One Piece fan since I was a kid and let me tell you it was awesome!! The actors are all amazing people out-of-character and the atmosphere of it all was so perfect. I look forward to working on season 2.

Netflix seriously woke up and realized "We could totally pick up the Pirates of the Caribbean money Disney left on the table" and consequently put genuine effort into this show. Genuinely awe-inspiring
It wasn’t necessarily Netflix who put the effort in, Oda (the mangaka of one piece) only agreed to let them produce the live action adaptation under the condition that EVERYTHING goes through him first and he perfected it as much as he could. Netflix letting him have that leniency is great though I will say that.
wow the fact the you think one piece is in the same boat (pun intended) as POC shows just how superficial your appreciation of one piece is. i hope you are a fan thats new to one piece as that would be more understandable
considering they put 5-6 anime episodes into 1 live action, they need another 200+ live actions to catch up to current day One Piece. At that point the anime would've finished well before a 3rd or 4th season
Guy who played Coby is an underrated actor, his body language tone and acting skills were very good, he actually seemed genuine and it didn’t feel like I was watching a copy but the real thing

As someone who didn't see the anime before the live action, I can say I did understand why Usop was able to join the crew. Even though he didn't have a big "wow" moment to be able to shine he just had a lot of build up of small and meaningful moments throughout that you can feel his heart in it. We see Luffy is a great judge of character, so it makes sense he saw it too
I agree with you, but when you think about it, Buggy was also pretty fucked up in the manga/anime. All of the One Piece villains tend to be really fucked up, now that I think about it lmao
I do think that there were some moments in the manga where Buggy was more intimidating than he ended up being in the show, because of the disparity between how goofy he seems and what he does. I wish the part with him partying to celebrate Nami joining his crew, and then telling her to kill Luffy, got carried over.
I'm honestly shocked how well paced it is, too. Like youd think something like One Piece would need like 20 episodes to cover everything they did cover.
I think most of his issues and most of fans who are hyper into it are they keep comparing and saying nope nope, as if the original plot had them captivated as much as they are now. Stuff like omgosh why did luffy invite ussop no plot beat told us that, easily answered by luffy inviting a bird...ep 1. they weren't watching the show they were rewatching the show they new for changes. All his criticisms while he isn't a critic so I get him not being able to articulate them perfectly, amount to...this changed...and I don't know if its bad...or good...i think its bad...even if the opposite, they made the show one for one and 50 eps would have made normal people drop it. It worked for normies and that's what matters...even if fans and reviewers thought normies hate it, its way better than they think. Normies can handle weird ideas I mean anime is popular now so is foreign movies and films, that push to hate and call people dorks for liking things besides hollywood's crap failed...people got bored of it on their own and stopped caring about being cool and lived their lives and turns out people like things and don't mind if you don't.

Lastly people who just enjoyed it aka general public. I just want a review that states something different like noticing the plot for the plot, was it intriguing, did you feel invested, was dialogue captivating, did you forget you were watching and get invested, did you buy all the logic...were characters well done, was it creative for the time (when it came out) etc. Technically at the time of release one piece wasn't seen as the worst or greatest like people believe so i'd say a 7-8/10 is fair for a first season.
Mihawk is extremely badass. My god I literally had goosebumps during his introduction scene. And that duel with Zoro, holy shit that was pure gold. I absolutely love this show. The only thing I hate is that we're gonna have to wait a while for season 2. Grrrr I want it NOW!!!! >:(

Agreed, something that springs to mind that has nailed this for years is Don Mancini, creator of the Child's Play movies, staying on board with Chucky. In my humble opinion, most of the Chucky movies and the show are phenomenal because it constantly takes creative unique approaches to the goofiness/horror of the series. And, importantly, Don Mancini has maintained the use of practical FX for the 30+ years the series has been around, meaning that every scene with Chucky is either a real puppet/animatronic doll or tiny human actors (when it shows him from behind or some such). The only exception being Child's Play (2019) with Mark Hamill voicing Chucky, and I'm not really sure how that came to be or why: It's not bad, but it doesn't feel like it has Don Mancini's fingerprint on it as much as the rest of the series. It feels like more of a test pilot for the horror movie Megan from this year which I always found kind of funny. Both of them are Universal horror movies about killer robot toys that go rogue (yes, 2019's Chucky is a robot, not even slightly connected to the ghost of a serial killer or anything supernatural), but it just so happens that it worked much better in the public eye as a unique IP instead of ripping off an iconic franchise. Anyway, tangent over.
I showed the live action One Piece to my parents. My mom has vertigo so she can't watch anime and my dad doesn't like anything animated, but now they're both fans. As a hardcore One Piece fan I couldn't be happier with it!
@@RockHoward256 he’s probably the best story writing Mangaka to date actually. One Piece, with how vast it is and how many episodes it holds, out of the 1079 episodes, there is truly only 42-48 filler episodes. Less than 5% of the show is filler. Not to mention, there are almost no plot holes either, Oda has a tree of things that have happened in the series and makes sure to keep things within plot. Naruto for example, is 40% filler in just Naruto, and Naruto Shippuden was 39% filler. It’s all about perspective.
The accents were my favorite part about the show, it's not talked about much but I think in a world full of different islands and a crew from different origins, having accents like Luffy's actor, Sanji's, Kobys, etc. really added to it.
@@ferretyluv yeah the casting was based on that, zoro would be japanese and usopp would be carribbean, letting oda be involved with the casting was just a smart idea.
What made me interested to watch the LA was the marketing with the cast, and their interviews. They're so likeable, and they seemed so passionate about the project. That same likeability and passion is shown in the series.
I don't know why people act as if actors sitting around speaking is any different than getting together with your friend and having a good time. that's not anything special to look at

I thought Usopp's best moment in Syrup Village came before the fight rather than during it. When Kaya slapped him because she thought he was going crazy, instead of running away in despair, he chose to stay in the back of her room anyway, until she was safe from danger.

The biggest takeaway from his review was that detour into the anime where we got the realization of Luffy's character development being a gradual process more heavily loaded into the later parts.
I was so impressed with how they summarized the core narrative beats of the show and made everything fit while cutting the fat of the series. The characters actually felt like the characters in the show and I cannot wait to see more! They did such a good job at keeping the important parts of the story in tact while also taking creative freedoms to move the story along easier.
I think one of the BEST things this show did was solving the problem of anime hair colors. All of the characters with funky colors (nami and zoro for example) have more natural colors in their roots, while the rest of the hair is the wacky anime color. It makes the characters look like the characters, and not like actors in cosplay.
Honestly I’m more surprised how well they managed to maintain consistency towards the anime without rushing, forcing and pushing through all arcs in one episode.
I scoffed at the idea of Luffy being represented by a real life personality. And then the actor managed to melt my cold jaded heart. You can hear the passion in every line he gives, how he truly wants to make this performance work. His ending scene with Coby in episode 1 actually got to me a lil
as someone who has never ever seen a single episode of one piece I thought this was AMAZING. I definitely thought Usopp was deserving of a spot on the team, not because of his skills or anything but in my eyes Luffy was looking for people he got along with or saw potential in, which I believe he saw in Usopp.
This I agree with as well. But, the one thing I wished they leaned onto more was his sharpshooting skills. I only vaguely remember bits and pieces from the 4Kids iteration from decades ago, but I remember that was his one ace skill he had.
@DarukaEon ye, he's the sharpshooter in his team (SPOILERS FOR WATER 7 SAGA): İn the enies lobby fight we saw him perfectly aim at marines from such a large distance thst even they got impressed, shooting right I'm the bullseye of the world government flag and hold his own against marine captains. Even at such an early stage of the show he was a prominent Sharpshooter, not to mention him managing to put up a good fight against Luffy in the duel
Thats actually perfect because thats exactly how luffy recruits people in the original source material aswell. He never even tasted sanjis cooking before deciding that he would join his crew.
As someone who has not seen the anime or read the manga, let me tell you, the live action has been a great opening for me to explore the One Piece universe. Heck, it even convinced me to finally go and watch the anime jist because of how invested i was with the world and the characters. While my opinion isnt the end all be all, i can say that, atleast for me, OPLA was effective enough to get me into the source material.
Haven't seen much of One Piece anime since how long the anime is and also that I have an early kind of hate for Luffy and Usopp... and I really wanna watch it cuz it seems pretty fun.
I’m gonna sing the praises of this show forever. I have not really ever been able to crack into anime as a medium and One Piece was at the bottom of the list of ones to try for how infamously long and stretched thin the arcs are. I didn’t expect anything from the live action show but my brother, a HUGE fan of the anime and manga, was so excited I agreed to watch it with him. It may have condensed a lot more than the anime fans would have ideally wanted but it does an incredible job of telling the story and now I’m a fan. I’m considering watching the anime now as a result and even if I don’t I have something my brother can talk to me about.
currently rewatching with One Pace and it's soo much better :) in general its manga>anime but some episodes are great in anime and elevate the source :D
One pace is very close to being fully caught up just a few early seasons still need to finish, so just a bit more patience and youll be able to binge it
the fact that Usopp was invited to the crew because of his heart is really true, Luffy never took him because he was a good sniper. Also buggy, captain Kuro and Mihawk were perfectly casted

Not enough people talking about how well they pulled off the three sword style!! I thought it would be hard for them to make that look good but they did an awesome job with just that alone

Eichiro Oda was directly involved to make sure it's not 1 to 1 but to keep the same spirit of the characters, the world and the tone. Props to the artists and the crew who worked on this, they did an amazing job! I am actually very impressed with this adaptation and actually looking forward to more seasons of it lol
Yeah i heard the man basically said if its not up to his expectations he wont let them release it. if only we get that dedication from other adaptations.
I love the main cast so much, you can feel that most of them are huge One Piece fans, too. The only thing I missed was Hatchan, it felt like the CGI budget ran out with Arlong vs Luffy, so they couldn't afford a 3 vs 6 swords fight. On the other hand, Sanji and Zeff had a great chemistry, their story was told so well.
This show just made me realize how little pirate "fantasy" content is out there. It's always historically accurate or adjacent. Pirates of the Caribbean had those fantastical elements, but even that was set in our actual world back in the 1700s.
I get what you mean. Closest I can think of is Wind Waker, but pirates don't really play a front and center role. But it's still fundamentally a "what if the whole world was a lawless open sea" fantasy world
Thats part of why one piece is really unique. Its a fantasy series but it chooses a setting or premise thats not seldom seen in that genre. And then he sets up the world and story structure so that he can make each island, arc, whatever style and tone or genre he wants, and they just go from island to island purveying all sorts of narrative styles, while he works on a larger plot. Its a smart way to incorporate that creative freedom into ones story. Because he set it up like this, he can do murder mystery one arc to political intrigue the next arc if he wanted.
As a first One Piece watcher, I'm now scared to watch the anime cause I want it all to be adapted in live action. Buggy is by far the best character too and you can tell they made him even better than the anime.
Do you think it is possible that no one is bold enough to try and make a pirate fantasy story (manga/anime/movie/etc) because of One Piece and PoTC? Without googling, I couldn't think of any other pirate fantasy shows with the exception of Sinbad cartoon movie (by dreamworks?), Sinbad from Magi (not much pirating in this show 😅), and Assassin's Creed Black Flag which is a game not a show/movie. Also there might be a lot out there but they never got any recognition or just bad 😂
I do really hope we get a season 2 and beyond. Hopefully, with the successful run of this season, they will have bigger budgets and more episodes per season. Only having 8 episodes did damper the pacing a little bit, I feel like even having 9 or 10 episodes would've made it all the more perfect.
The B Plot from the Marines they added in also cut down alot, but yeah it felt like there was never an opportunity for a breather with the crew at times. Hopefully all the production design they accomplished with building boats cuts the cost a tiny bit. That being said Season 2 would pretty much be Loguetown + Alabasta which means Giants, Dinosaurs, Crocodiles, a Labboon, Chopper, the new Paramecia users like Robin, and tons of Logia Users so they're 100% going to need that CGI budget.
I'm really hopeful for a season 2 as well, but I wouldn't expect an increase in budget at all. This first season already cost 144 Million dollars to make. For a comparison, Game of Thrones season 8 cost 90 million dollars. I think it'll already be a miracle if we get a season 2 of One Piece, and an even bigger miracle if the budget doesn't decrease.
@@SinderSoyl To be fair that last season of GOT had 6 episodes, though cost wise each One Piece episode costs the same as a GOT one at that point. For another comparison, season 4 of Stranger Things had a 30 Mill Budget/episode, almost double One Piece's. A big aim for Netflix is their global audience, and One Piece is breaking records for being #1 in 84 countries. It's paying off and the last thing Netflix would want is to lose that. Especially considering what Season 2 would have I just wouldn't be surprised if the budget goes up.

There's still one thing that's unclear though, and it's that shows have a reported initial budget and sometimes end up showing a much higher cost after it's released. An example would be Rings of Power, which was supposed to have a budget similar to One Piece LA but ended up spending over 450 million dollars. I wouldn't be surprised if One Piece had the same kind of announcement at some point. It definetly looked like it cost a fuckton of money to make. Stranger Things 4 probably had a significant amount of its budget dumped into the main cast's payroll. In any case, I'll stay hopeful :)

I absolutely loved this adaptation. The actors did an amazing job embodying the characters. They seem so passionate about the community, the source material and really gave it their all. The set design was top notch and the actor they picked for Luffy was perfect!
I've watched the first season in one day. First 5 minutes are so cringe, it hurt to watch. Gol d. Roger's execution exposed the low budget hiring and much more. Tho the more, it came in every episode. Really bad camera work, mediocre directorship. Actors are like if you go to a anime expo and hire the cosplayers. The acting is really mediocre. B or C actors Mostly. Diversity hires, transgender Koby and more. Zoro is good, luffy, tho 10 shades more brown, a Mexican, is likeable tho. Buggy's actor is top tier, perhaps the best actor in the whole show. Also, the animators are good. But what really shines are the props - everything in the series feels like one piece. Boats, world, places houses, rooms...tio work! Acting is the weakest part. And to me, I hate diversity hires. If you have a transgender in the show, have him/her cause they Are good, and not BECAUSE they are trans. Damn... This show, according to what I saw, could have been a legendary 10/10 adaptation. As it is rn, it's like a 5 or 6/10. But... It could have been also dragon ball evolution or death note movie cringe bad travesty

I also love the inclusion of the grandfather and grandson dynamic between Garp and Coby and how they're given more attention in the show than in the anime. also, the fact that shanks and his crew got more action in the LA than they did in the ENTIRE anime is almost laughable
I liked the live action overall, but I disagree on these points. I think It's cooler, and it makes a lot more sense, for Ben Beckman to solo the mountain bandits without even shooting his gun, than how they all needed to work together in the LA. There were some other power scaling concerns, like Luffy being weaker that zoro feat wise for half the show, but it still far exceeded my expectations. The Garp story line took a lot of time out of the main story line, and it removed the possibility of the luffy-garp moment at marineford if the LA ever gets there. It also feels weird for such an endgame character like Garp to be so involved. Imagine if Mihawk kept chasing the straw hats. And Coby and Helmeppo weren't given enough time to get strong at all.
Koby is the only part of the show that I can't stand so far. It just feels like the typical netflix diversity shoe in so they can appeal to the trans activists on twitter. The actor has horrible line delivery like he's reading off the script in every scene.

I haven’t seen the original One Piece but I can just tell from watching the show that the actors are near perfect for the character archetypes they’re conveying. Everyone was fantastic but I’m just gunna rant about Luffy because OH MY GOODNESS. I love how this character doesn’t have an ounce of sarcasm or snarkiness. He is just such a loveable, positive guy who keeps declaring random people who catch his eye as part of his crew and everyone just eventually falls for his golden retriever charm. Also another thing I like is the RELATIONSHIPS. Like bro I never knew how much I needed just a group of adult friends going on adventures together and having fun. I love the dynamic between them all! I love how Zoro is very skeptical about each new crew member because he’s clearly very protective about Luffy and Nami deep down, but eventually he grows attached to them as well. I love Nami’s character, she’s not at all what I thought she would be, and her personality is so much fun! She has so much depth that I didn’t expect when I originally saw her character whatever One Piece stuff I saw before. Her backstory and trauma is very unique for a female protagonist and it’s HEARTWRENCHING. I also love that she bounces off the other guys so well and that nobody ever comments on how she’s a girl until the literal ladies man enters the scene. And then they just tease her like a group of friends would! I love how she and Luffy and Zoro are just the three musketeers and best friends, they sell their dynamic so well and that’s why they are my favourite characters. You just don’t get female characters like Nami! And her and Zoro’s dynamic and build up to being genuine friends is great. AND ANOTHER THING! The SOUNDTRACK!!! All the characters have their own themes and are so fun! Sanji has this jazzy trumpet whenever he gets ready to fight, Zoro had this dramatic violin and drums, and Usopp has this Spanish guitar going on! Sanji’s jazzy background theme is part of the reason I grew to like him so much despite being a bit rushed in his introduction. That and his fighting style, his acting, his personality of being a hot headed weirdo one second and a ladies man the next, and his strict morals about food. Actually now that I think about it there’s a lot of reason to like all the characters. TL;DR: Show good :)
They missed a HUGE opportunity right after Syrup Village, which was to demonstrate Usopp's talent with shooting with cannons when Garp started a ship battle, that was the perfect moment for Usopp to shine, and it'd probably be less expensive than the CGI of Luffy doing the gum gum balloon

I was wondering if it was going to serve as some form of development for usopp since in his own arc, he really didn’t do anything (reread syrup village, usopp is hella well done). Maybe he’d feel a bit bad or something and he’d try to work on himself and his place on the crew. Like usopp is naturally good at aiming at stuff but they don’t reinforce it much.

If you like the LA and like anime as well, then you should definitely give it a shot. A lot of the story beats done in the LA are more impactful in the anime because of the anime taking more of its time telling the story. The pacing in the LA is just too quick, still an amazing adaptation though.

Please check out the anime. My coworker had his doubts, but after watching the first 30 episodes, he is now CAUGHT UP in the anime after 4 months, lol.
It's a fact that Oda did not plan everything in One Piece from the beginning, and what makes this adaptation so great is he takes everything amazing from the original and "builds" on it such as "what if I had done this, or told the story that way." It's One Piece, but with 20+ years of planning, feedback, and notes which is why it unsurprisingly worked.
Everyone felt so into their roles, it was really refreshing. Highlights include Usopp, Buggy, and Arlong. Usopp's actor adapted his fake storytelling so well, and some of his deliveries were goddamn hilarrious. Arlong, despite the costume design, absolutely nailed the character. And Buggy stole the show everytime he spoke.
As a non OP watcher before hand, I've now hit ep 50 and have finished arlong park. The LA hooked me in when shanks showed his haki(which I looked up and now know) in front of the sea beast. I cried when Nami was stabbing herself and then it zooms out to show the MF crew ready to storm arlong park. The LA invested me into the anime. This coming from a weeb, quite impressive

My absolute favorite scene was just the whole crew talking with eachother. Nothing else going on just them talking with eachother. Characters and their relationships are the most important part of one piece and I just loved the crews chemistry
I also loved that! I remember that was one of my favorite parts when I started watching/reading One Piece. I miss those moments, so I was really happy to see that again! I feel like now, since the crew is bigger, is more complicated to have moments with all of them together.
I agree with the Usopp part. They could've easily made him fight Sham or Buchi using his antics and made Zoro fight just one of them. His awesome character development in Arlong Park was also shafted because they removed his internal monologue. I'm a big Usopp fan, even the aspects of him that annoy people endear me to him, so I was a bit disappointed that they didn't focus much on story beats that focus on him. But if you look at it from a pov of someone who's new to this, I say it's fine. The actor nailed Usopp's personality and he was a joy to watch.
I actually wasn't planning to get involved with the one piece community or anything one piece related, but then I saw the live-action and thought that It wouldn't hurt to watch 8 episodes. For one day I binged those 8 episodes and was already so invested in it, like It surpassed my expectations so hard! So with that, consider me new to the crew
Jacob Romero as Usopp completely stole my heart, I really wish he had gotten more time in the trailers because he sold that role so well. I’m around 520ish episodes into the anime, and his acting really refreshed my love for that character. Honestly, the majority of the cast left that impression with me. This adaptation was a passion project that’s earned it’s place as the best of its kind!
That dance scene in the ship sold it hard for me lol he just captures the essence & spirit of Usopp's fun loving goofy playful personality but also intelligence & understanding of what's going on in his scenarios.
The fact that this will act as an introduction to One Piece for many people around the world fills me with joy. The most difficult part about this series is getting into it, and I'll be damned if they didn't nail that problem to the wall creating action, pacing, and music to actually interest viewers of all ages. The story is timeless and this is how they've captured that greatness.
You can tell Netflix wanted to make this live action show as good as it can be, that they even got Oda to take a massive roll in the creation of the show, unlike most live action adaptations
Its Netflix who called oda to help them he's the one who personally intervened to keep an eye on what they're doing to his show cuz he doesn't want them to butcher it
That and the guy who played Lufy had a lot to say. The director said he was a critic of a lot of scene and elevated them. I enjoyed the live action. It was good.

Main takeaway with usopp makes sense but I think the "golden ticket" to join the crew was the mention that he was yasopps son and that was what sealed the deal for luffy
@@margarethmichelina5146 I think that's not gonna be the problem, i think they could adapt the show the very least up until pre time skip with some dodgy parts, after that it's a straight path to kaiju battles. The power scaling was fairly tame till that point. The one thing that worries me is Chopper, he has to be a human like, on 2 legs CGI deer who makes medicine with fucking hooves for hands so idk how they gonna get him right but otherwise, Arabasta Saga could be REALLY good, simple enough not many CGI needed and has a really good theme, Sky Island Saga could be a dodgy one but i think even that is manageable with some creative freedom then Water 7 Saga could be really good again, the main concerns are the Zoan Fruit juicers but if they get Chopper right then the rest won't be a problem or actually they could be wearing props like how the fish man did, Thriller Bark Saga where it could get fishy tho with Brook, he could look good, they could tame his characters but i hardly see that being a prop, so it's a constant main character CGI drain alongside Chopper who cannot be a prop as well. Leading into the Summit War Saga and eventually the time skip (Fish-Man Island Saga) anything after the Summit War is bordering on making Godzilla movies.. Even Franky goes full robot so that's an other constant CGI Drain.. Who knows, maybe props ? Hardly. Besides Chopper and Brook, most characters could be done with props like how they did the Fish man, as long they're roughly human sized, so Jinbei could be physically real too and look good but even if they get the models right i don't think the scale of the fights and attacks and abilities will add up. REGARDLESS I would love it if they could just get at least half of these things as right as they did with this season and get it going till at least Arabasta, getting it fully down till Summit arc would be a blessing. Anything after that is just going from Hard to Hardcore nightmare difficulty.
I watched this show as someone who never watched or read One Piece (I barely knew anything about it surprisingly). To me the show was completely coherent, I never felt lost and I really liked it. As someone with minimum knowledge of the show, even the minimum time spent on the boats was not a huge deal - it made sense to me that the story at this point would take place mostly on land - but I get what Charlie means. Chemistry between the actors was also on point, or at least seemed that way to me. Overall, loved it, at the moment trying to get my parents to watch it (my dad loves PotC movies, I think he'd like One Piece too), and I hope Netflix continues, cause this series so far deserves it. Now if you'll excuse me, I'll go and fight the urge to start watching 1000+ episodes of the anime.
This live action was the LAST thing any of us expected, and it was genuinely one of the best adaptations I’ve ever seen. The massive world, the perfect casting, and the genuine good tv show that it is. Amazing. This is the only right way to make live action adaptations. edit - didnt expect this comment blow up lolll, glad a lot of ya'll agree though, I get that its not a 1 to 1 copy but thats simply not possible. I just appreciate the effort and dedication every part of the showmaking crew had and odas involvment. It made for an amazing adaptation.
It also helped that the showrunner is a massive fan of the series + Oda being decently involved in the process as well. And it’s crazy that this succeeded despite all its fantastical and goofy elements while “easier” to adapt series like Cowboy Bepop and Death Note failed. Just goes to show you need the right ppl behind these adaptations.
I think the reason they really didn't really develop Usopp's motivation to join Straw Hat crew at the first meet is because it's not quite really "joined" the crew, it was more like he's just tagging along. They saving it for Water 7 season later (I hope) with the crucial moment and officially get motivated to officially join.
I don’t know what drugs you are on but when Luffy and Zoro asked Ussop to join in the manga after the syrup village arc that made him an official member. He joins again later but he was always official
The Adaptation is actually why I started binging the anime, currently in Japan and have been watching it every second I've had at the Airbnb or on the trains, its fun seeing the major changes and appreciating the speed at which the show moves in live action cos, in classic anime fashion, having Captain Kuro take a full episode to walk from the house to the shore is painfully slow
I have to say , Koby character is a very well cast . I was SO IMPRESSED on how identical the character look and act in the live action from it anime character .
He was sooo good in the role. I remember in the manga being less invested in his development parallel to Luffy but they did a great job in the LA. It's been a little sad to see a little transphobia towards the actor, but also nice to see him get the recognition he deserves.

What he went through with Luffy was what I went through with Polnareff. I despised him at first but once we saw him mature down and got exposition to him I sobbed like a baby at the end of part 3. He went from least favorite to second it was very impressive
Yeah here he showed that he has quite a lot of interest in the characters and the story. Never got that impression from his OP updates. Makes me happy that we got another one on board tho 💯
I'm really hoping that they'll expand on Usopp and Sanji's characters in a second season, so they'll be able to add in the elements that made them good characters in the anime/manga.
Yeah, the real moment that sealed Sanji as part of the crew for me was the avalanche on Drum Island. I hope they include some version of it. I also hope Usopp doesn't get relegated to the background comic relief character in the future.
Bull shit just the small details like him saying he's a stretchy man when he usually says I'm a rubber man.... Plus when king of the pirates dies his speech was different..
From the showrunner to the actors many of them are fans, thus knowing the story well and care for the source material. Also the creator Oda himself supervises the show and the show will not release until Oda himself is satisfied. This can be a great lesson to upcoming live action adaptation anime shows.
Buggy spends every moment of screen time chewing the scenery and I am HERE for it. I like the theory being thrown around, that his role wasn't supposed to be so prominent (more like the manga), but when they finally got Jeff Ward in front of a camera, they were like "shit, we need this guy in more episodes."

I felt like there was just so much effort put into selling the setting in live-action. The sets were amazing, the absurd number of extras with amazing costumes and prosthetics, everything. I'd probably only ever seen a couple dozen episodes of the anime over my life, and have always enjoyed the idea of One Piece, but the Live Action is probably gonna get me to start reading it. Loved it a lot!
I as well told people its about an 8/10 which is extremely impressive for a Live Action adaptation. The Sanji thing WAS very strange, he wasnt even there for the Zoro fight which was an important moment for him realizing that there are people willing to put their lives on the line to reach for their dreams. And it was odd that Zeff was basically pressuring him into leaving from the jump, guilting him for saving his life just to have Sanji stay and not search for the All Blue. It just sucks that they didnt have 9 or 10 episodes to work with where they really wouldnt have had to make such odd changes. Hopefully its mad success will allow them an even bigger budget and less time constraints.
I like the Sanji stuff. They showed the past for a reason, his life there was just being wasted so any chance to leave was almost like saving his life and the dream of the all blue for him and zeff. Zeff didn't lose that leg for nothing
@@devob100 My main problem isnt so much how they went about showing in the show, its about what they DIDNT show. His character just benefits overall from the kreig fight and witnessing the zoro fight a lot as far as his introduction to the story is concerned. Not to mention the send off, but because they have time constraints these are the sacrifices that must be made.

I do think Sanji’s willingness to just join the crew was a little out of nowhere, but one thing I thought was pretty cool about the whole Don Krieg and Mihawk difference was that Mihawk actually was given a more intentional and purposeful reason for being there instead of just casually and seemingly randomly floating on in to slash some fools. Mihawk did technically clash with them in the Grand Line in the original show as well, it was just off screen, so it isn’t like just totally 100% different. The whole thing in live action made the encounter with Mihawk less by chance and more intentional.
Yeah, I do wish they added more about Sanji, especially the part where Luffy so badly wanted him to be on his crew that he refused Sanji's refusal to join hahahaha but I guess they had to fit in more about Nami and ended up cutting more of Sanji's parts out
Idk, I always thought it was cool the only reason Mihawk showed up to Baratie was bc Don Krieg interrupted his nap, lol. It really showed that he dgaf and does whatever he wants, meanwhile the Live Action version makes it look like he's more of a government lapdog but idk
I actually disagree with Charlie's take on Sanji. I understand the concerns with Don Krieg, but Sanji did have an internal struggle joining the crew. His respect and feeling of indebtedness to Zeff was THE biggest struggle and always was. They dedicated nearly 50% of an episode to this and the manga/anime went into it as well. If it wasn't for Zeff literally making sure he didn't have any standing in the Baratie and then eventually just telling Sanji to leave, then Sanji would have NEVER left the Baratie. He wasn't just "gong-ho" ready to go for no reason. Also, he's not "ride or die with this crew forever" because of events Charlie hasn't even gotten to in the anime yet. (minor spoiler, I guess. not really though.)
Yeah, but watching the determination of Zoro and Luffy in their vs against Mihawk and Don Krieg respectively, is a huge reason that convinces Sanji to join the strawhats and its absent in the LA

I'm so glad it's a success. The series was made in my country and usually movies flop when they make it here so the fact that one piece is doing well is great. I really hope to see a lot more in future
Credit where credit is due, they are condensing episodes upon episodes of character developement, foreshadowing and events pretty well , and while it does feel a tiny bit rushed they still managed get alot done in such short time
The Jimbei foreshadowing was👌Its so much better hearing it from Arlong given their history, in the manga/anime Jimbei was foreshadowed through Johnny and Yosaku.
A few things i want to say: 1. Emily Rudd, who plays Nami did a fantastic job with the arlong park ark portraying that knife scene beautifully 2. Although the fight on the hill was great, Captain Kuro being a horror movie slasher was one of my favorite changes 3. I was okay with the usopp pirates not being added but hachi and jango was borderline criminal 4. I Loved the cast, and although the child actors were hit or miss, sanji and zeffs story was PEAK flashback 5. The themes of kuro, arlong, and the music in general was fantastic. loved the menacing theme of kuro while arlong had a trap beat. I agree with charlie that its an 80%. the show could've benefitted greatly from 2 more episodes making baratie and syrup village 1 episode longer each
I did hear it originally was supposed to have 10 episodes for the first season, but was cut to 8 mid way I think, which is.. really unfortunate to hear.
Episode 4 was amazing. i did not expect that kind of performance from kuro. i really liked the change. i still also like the original. its a win win for me 😁
As someone who had never consumed any One Piece content before, I can confidently say that I thought the live action season 1 was fantastic. I couldn’t get enough of it. The story was great, the characters (and their amazing actors) were great, and I had a blast with every episode. Since I haven’t seen the anime, I don’t know what pieces were left out, but I can say that I didn’t feel like anything was missing in the live action’s story. The pacing felt great and I didn’t feel like they were making any questionable jumps from point A to point C. As someone who probably won’t get into the anime any time soon (I’m sorry, I’m just not a massive fan of the art style and the anime is really really long), I’m glad to have this new way to be able to engage with and enjoy the story of One Piece. I can’t wait for season 2!
As someone who has never watched a single episode of the One Piece Anime before, I can absolutely assure you that I had so much fun watching the Live Action; the acting, the incredible fight scenes and the characters were really great, even though it did feel a bit rushed, especially in the first episode. I really hope there’s going to be a second season because I’m really scared to have to watch 999+ episodes of the anime 😅.
Honestly I'd recommend the manga if you become interested in exploring this more and you don't mind comics. The live show is cool but it doesn't have the depth that the OG material has. The manga is a much more digestible way of consuming vs the anime. It will still take time, but you have more control of the pace at which you consume it and it's also just quite good as a comic. You can always google the iconic parts in the anime later to see how they did them because they tend to do a good job at that. If weary about the length still, I'd recommend just not rushing it or worrying about catching up. Just start and read for the joy of it at the pace that you want, there's no need to consume the whole thing fast. I recently read everything by reading like a couple of arcs at a time and taking big breaks when I felt like it. Took me over a year doing it like that, but I never framed it as a goal, just something I did for fun. The length didn't really matter because I was just enjoying it.
dont be scared. just watch it or read the manga. because one thing the anime/manga is doing better is the emotional buildup/payoff. thanks to its length it can take its time to build up events and give it a much more satisfying emotional payoff. best example is(as charlie stated already) sanji.. especially his goodbye to zeff.. in the anime all the buildup and how he breaks down and bows down deeply to thank zeff hits a million times harder in the anime. also the entire nami backstory is sooooo much better in the anime and especially the "help me" scene. in the live action it feels rushed somehow

There's a lot of character portrayals I was genuinely impressed with. Usopp, Zoro, even Koby and Helmeppo, and so many others. I think a lot of the casting choices were actually really good. It took me a good few episodes to warm up to the live action weirdness, but honestly the show ended up being very entertaining.
Same. The thing they did with the extreme close ups of the characters faces, I didn’t like that. Took me a while to get past that but in the end it wasn’t bad. I’m still not all the way sold but I’m glad it wasn’t a shit show.
I'm a middle aged woman, and was never into anime or manga. I had heard of One Piece, but knew nothing about it. I wanted to watch something different on Netflix ,so I tried One Piece. And now I'm a fan! I loved all the characters. The story and characters warmed my heart. I cant wait for season 2.
The Buggy introduction was awesome. Him chilling on his throne, nonchalantly ripping his wanted poster away then closeup to his crazy smile. Loved it. also, yes, agree about the Usopp arc. It was kinda boring tbh.. But it was also the most boring arc in the anime as well, so at least now it's done and over and the rest are awesome arcs :D
Hopefully, if they get a second season, they'll get more episodes than 8. I think they did only 8 than the 10 they were supposed to get, which was due to the backlash of it all. People pretty much lost it when we found out it was being made by the same studio that did cowboy bebop. Also, with a lot of shows flopping, they weren't going to take the risk. So what they were able to do in 8 episodes is pretty amazing.
@rancorrage5646 I hope they get more than 10. I need at least 5 episodes with Ace. I really want the parts where sanji plays crocodile in making him believe the crew is dead and then blowing up his casino. It really stood out how cool sanji really was.
yeah kuro fight should of been extended and don kreig should of been the villain of the sanji part which would of had us at about 10 episodes and would be lore accurate
@@Lirin21 how would you get 5 1 hour episodes with Ace he is only in a couple of chapters during the Alabasta arc. and even then they are mostly just small appearances, for a gag or a cool moment. he was in it hardly at all.
I think my favorite part of the live action is that I don’t know any of the actors. It’s so nice not seeing the exact same actors in every single movie.
I have never watched the anime but these characters are so inspired and you just fall in love. It's goofy but five minutes into the show you don't care. It's so refreshing to see characters that get you on your feels.

i think one reason that could make sense of usopp easily joining the crew is the fact that he's yassop's son, and luffy knows yassop, so maybe he invited him so he can one day have them meet
I haven't seen the live action and at first I was like 'this Is too campy' and then I started buying Luffy's dream. I want him to succeed so bad, and all his friends too. Imagine having a Luffy in your life, it'd be so nice! I really want a season 2, but I may see the anime also. Haven't decided yet!
@@ferrellcowen5872i think it is because one piece is important to him and don’t want people to ruin it with the dub version. It feels like everyone who watches dub hates luffy because the VA is terrible, and he is the number one reason people love the anime
I love how Oda was not only the creative consultant on OP, but the show runners *respected him and consulted with him* so the live action conformed to his standards.
The entire cast is passionate, they get creative, and they made the tone of the show perfect. It’s an amazing Live Action, and a super enjoyable watch.
Or like Sweet Tooth, they have a kid/young teen actor wear some antlers and animal ears. Like why not choppers hybrid form be more human like in Live Action
As someone who doesn't care about One Piece, even I was into it. The last time I watched it was when I was young, when I watched the OG 4Kids dub of it. My uncle liked it so much he started to watch the actual anime and he doesn't even care for anime, it goes to show how passionate the cast is and how good the show is. I'm actually excited to see where it goes.
I remember when this was announced and it was one of those “I can’t believe this is actually gonna happen , I’m not even ready for how bad this is gonna be” to “wow the sets actually look accurate” and then I remember leading up to it all of my friends were saying that they were cautiously optimistic because of Oda’s blessing and all the footage that had been shown
The little things they trimmed were not missed which feels weird saying because Jango was one of my favorite characters. Cutting Kreig out made sense to me given the increased involvement of Arlong to set him up better as the final boss of the season. The actors for the most part nailed their characters without wandering into cartoony territory. They way they wove the backstory of the 5 characters I feel was handled well. The scene when Usopp learns that Luffy got to know his father when he didn't hit really hard. The practical effects were a joy to behold and the CGI powers weren't pure cringe (aside from the gum gum balloon). I hope this gets a season 2 mostly because I want to see how Chopper is handled. He is going to have to be a completely CGI character which can be the kiss of death if not handled correctly.
I think they’ll actually handle the odd characters well they just needed to get a season out to prove the show could make it. They knew as soon as they started filming they were gonna be going for the long run they just needed to make this season exactly what it is. They definitely chose the season length and the arcs to fit in to allow the ability to head into characters like chopper, brook and franky cause they will require a good budget to make come across well. But after seeing what they’ve done i have full faith they will do well coming into the areas where the characters are far less human like. They had to get to Arlong to prove to the community they could make the ultra odd looking characters come across well.
