The Open Ocean is my favorite place to target California Halibut. The fish can be harder to find, but the reward can be so much greater. Hope you enjoy this trip to the big lake!!!!

My opinion is yourcatches is more than enough proof that your theory on how your bait presentation is key to your success. Like our rig we use when drifting for blue catfish is called a Sante Cooper rig. A rattling float about 8in. from the hooked bait, and above that is like a 4 oz lead. The ratting float keeps the bait off the bottom. Aloha from Kansas

Live squid is my favorite bait. It’s crack to everything in the ocean and I’ve caught some of my biggest halibut on live squid. Yellowtail, White Sea bass love squid and it’s much easier to use then sardines. Give me squid any day over everything

Hey, Adam. When you are fishing for halibut, with the depths often changing, and with no contact with the bottom, how do you know that your bait stays just above the sand? It seems if the depth deepens, your bait would lift too far from the sand. Thanks!

Love your videos but not too loose of a drag, you need to keep the tension on them. Go for winch mode haha.
@fishingtacklechannel
@fishingtacklechannel 3 года назад
You gotta set your drag and try not to mess with them. They will always come up soon or later without tightening the drag. Let the drag and the rod do their thing, please. I get very anxious when people get too excited and start tightening their already set drag and pump the rod up and down.
@fishingtacklechannel
@fishingtacklechannel 3 года назад
@@Koji-888 yea, you keep pumping and setting that drag. That will most definitely work for a giant halibut.

@hookdontail4623
@hookdontail4623 3 года назад
Fyi. Halibut are triggered by the weight thumping the bottom. At the same time you know you are close to bottom if you feel it. A longer leader while bouncing weight will keep bait gliding along. You seem to be doing just fine tho.
