Where ever you go, there you are. Depression is caused by living in the past. Anxiety is caused by living in the future. If you live in the present, what problems can you have? When the student is ready, the teacher appears.

I came down to relax. Now that I've been down here for little over a year. I have made friends and starting up my love of working with wood. Sure, I still have time to kick back and enjoy a fine cigar. I love living dow here.

For myself good health is my top priority, with that their are certain daily habits and routines that have to be done WHEREVER I live. i.e. exercise, meditation etc. Having said that without getting into too much of my journey, two lessons I have learned along the way: You can't run from yourself and Discipline is the difference between being wild and being free. Now I would add Enjoy the moments - as far as I know tomorrow is not promised to anyone But hey didn't I see a Gourmet Chocolate Shop in La Fortuna? 😋 We love you Michael Pura Vida 🌺

True that and you are exactly right, discipline is definitely the answer... but for lot of us, easier said than done. Thanx for your wise comments and the chocolate shop is a 10 second walk to where I filmed this 😉

I agree some days discipline is easier than others and those days require self compassion 💞

Totally agree with you Michael, as usual. I've experienced this exact feeling while living in"paradise" and wondered about it. I'm not even the slightest bit of a drinker, but I find myself wanting just a little bit of alcohol each evening; never before in my busy "first" world life... It extends to other things like, hmm, now that I've got all this time, why am I not doing all that exercise I promised myself I would do? Why am I not studying the language hours a day like I thought I would. Geez, you have opened my eyes/mind to what's going on. I'm not leaving so I guess I better get started on working on it. Either that, or it's just I've finally allowed myself to slow down and be a bit lazy for the first time in my life...
@shelleysquires7225

One does not have to do anything or maybe one does different things, I have to say as a professional student that hours a day of Spanish is unrealistic. It's all about priorities and how good you want to feel or not. :)
@shelleysquires7225
@shelleysquires7225 2 года назад
I forgot to add that for myself when doing something new I start small - it's better to consistently do 20 or 30 minutes a day of something than 2 hours today and not again for a week or two. Build up slowly. Most importantly have self compassion 💞

This is true. We been here for 6 months. The politics and delivery times are very slow but we took the time to just be.. when something shows up or get passes then we make some moves then we rest till next steps. Rest means beach, walking dog or doing some shopping.

What came to mind the first time I watched this video, and I mentioned to the DW, (devoted wife) last night. The reason I don't pray and meditate is because I don't pray and meditate. Another way to put it might be, Before the cart goeth the horse. Best regards!

I totally agreed 💯 I go CR and work from there two months at the time. My problem is, I feel I need to do some kind of trip every weekend because I'm in CR. So I end up spending more money in CR than when I'm is US. I guess I have to learn how to manage weekends in CR!

Totally agree. You definitely need to have some activities planned out because Costa Rican days sometimes go on foreeeeever. Time seems to move slower. For me that's a bonus, it moves too fast in the States. Volunteering is a great suggestion.

I think you are right. I also think that most people haven't travelled much and CR may be the only other country they have ever lived in. This also shows a general inflexibility and unworldliness because everyone assumes things will be like their home country, only better and can't open their minds to other ways of thinking.

"Tell me who does these kinds of videos." What you say about that is correct, Mike. I subscribe to several different CR RU-vidrs and love each and every one of them. But I subscribe to each for entirely different reasons. There is no doubt that your channel has been Michel's and my go-to source for immediately relevant advice and information, like the tip about the Chachagua diesel mechanic you gave me. That turned out to be absolutely golden, because not only are we blown away by the good work they're doing, but by them as human beings. One of these days I am going to do my own video about this experience and I will email you the link, because you will be heavily mentioned in it since your channel is an integral part of that story.

When I travelled to Namibia years ago, I talked to a person selling properties, farms and houses. He said, one of the biggest problems people suffer from, when they buy a farm and move there, is...loneliness and severe depression. There are societies that offer workshops for these people, with the topic of how to deal with this loneliness. In Namibia, a huge country, you can drive for 2 or 3 days without seeing another car or even meet other people. But also in a small country like CR you can suffer from issues like that. Maybe offering meetings or workshops could be a thing...

Michael, my husband and I love your videos. You're so freaking real! We talk--just talking now, mind you--about retiring down there. Our last trip down was with friends who are avid drinkers. We do enough drinking on our own, but add them to the mix, and...hoo boy. 😑 At this stage in our lives, it wouldn't be good for us to live there. But, with several years under our belts of moderate (or no) drinking, we'd be fine. It's something to think about, so thanks for the fodder. Happy New Year!!

Yep, completely true and I met Americans and other foreigners, Frenxh, Dutch, exactly like what you described. Mostly the drinking 5:00 PM b4 moving to CR, then 11:00 am in CR. Because they are bored or, as you said, and it's an addiction and CR is the perfect environment to promote any addictions. Good video Michael! Sad, but all truth.

The extra time we have here is devils playground that is for sure . The only thing I always am thankful that I am employed full time so I only have free time after my workday.

Good talk, seriously. I have been to many places, some that people refer to as Paradise. I am a resident in Costa Rica now for three years. And i do love it here, however it is not Paradise. Paradise as a physical location does not exist. Granted it is beautiful here but it can be ugly here as well. Pure life means just that. The saying is not best life or easy life or perfect life. And yes the honeymoon does end, it’s what you do with every moment afterwards that matters. I enjoyed this video and i have been watching your videos for years.It seems as though you are a lot happier these days and that is good. We actually met once and I could tell then that you were struggling, like we all do. That’s Pura Vida. Paradise is not a place, it’s a mind set that ebbs and flows and is much better than the hamster wheel.

I came down here because I was single and free ( of responsibilities ). It was heaven for several years, now, most of what I came here for is gone and I'm a little older. Costa Rica is not like it was, any gringo will agree if they have been here for awhile. I am ready to leave, I have different interests now. I want to go back to the States to play with my hobby ( can't here because of the mail system and the customs cost importing ). I think many of us are like that. I've been waiting for my ( tica ) daughter to get old enough for me to leave, almost there. She'll have a good start in life, I'm leaving her my house and she'll get my life insurance when I die. Her mother can help her with the rest ( my daughter always lived with me, she opted to live with me ). Good video but you should say that "people change and Costa Rica change as part of the reason". Thanks Al

It’s interesting because I think in western society we are so conditioned to just go go go all the time. The rat race mentality is really hard to break. I can definitely see how going from being constantly busy to having an abundant about of free time can be very jarring. It’s hard to slow down when your used to going 100 m/hr all the time.

Bad video Costa Rica is a very beautiful country but is also the most expensive country in Latin America... People call it for Swaziland of South America for a reason So the reason for most people leave there is because of money for sure... Living in Costa Rica can be as expensive as living in some European or American cities, without the benefits of having the organization, infra structure and public services of those cities Also for being an expat you will 100% sure pay more than a local, so the expensive get even more expensive So after the first period of honey moon you realize you are living in a very expensive, not very modern, little country If you aren't making a buckload of money you will soon be making debts to live there, and Noone can keep up lilfe this way SPECIALLY PEOPLE WHO MOVES TO COSTA RICA TO RETIRE So without any romance money is the key...
